One Healthy Breakdown: there’s nothing better than feeling your best at the beach!

Hampton Doula to the Rescue

Truth be told, for the majority of my pregnancy, I was in complete denial that I was actually going to have to give birth. Though I was pretty content living in this state of mind, I knew that I would have to accept the fact that I was going to have to physically deliver a baby…that and the fact that I needed some serious guidance, education, and support…aka HELP!

Enter, Hampton Doula, Monica Kadash, to the rescue! I met Monica early in my second trimester when I started to attend her prenatal yoga class at Ananda in Southampton. I instantly gravitated towards Monica’s welcoming personality, calm demeanor, and lighthearted sense of humor. I loved the class and attended weekly, right up until days before I gave birth. Monica incorporates lots of stretching and relaxation to get centered as well as some challenging poses to prepare the mind and body for birth.

When I was considering hiring a doula, I knew that I wanted someone who would bring out the best in me, ideally someone spiritual, but not too spiritual that I couldn’t relate. Monica is exactly that;  straightforward and realistic, yet very warm and tranquil.

The day that I gave birth was a long, uneventful one until my water broke around 2pm, when suddenly, baby came fast and furiously. When it got down to the hard labor (the part I was dreading) I was thanking my lucky stars for Monica’s presence. As a doula, Monica provides support (both prenatal and postnatal) and advocacy alongside the medical staff. (Doulas are commonly confused with midwives, who are medically qualified to deliver babies.)

Statistically, with the help of Doulas there are less interventions,  fewer C-sections, shorter labor and reduced postpartum depression. This results in a fulfilling and satisfying birthing experiences, in short, many more happy moms!

My mission is to honor, protect and guide you, so that you feel empowered to birth fearlessly and joyfully, thus starting your journey into motherhood with confidence.” ~ Monica

Monica did just that for us; I was able to stay (somewhat) strong through the worst contractions, push with sheer determination and confidence, and instantly connect with our baby girl. In the moment, all of my fears of needles, blood, and pain were overcome by sheer empowerment.

Throughout this unique process, Monica helped in every way promised. She provided literature on the birthing process and came to our house twice to get to know our family and educate us on the whole process. She prepared us with facts, stories, strategies, and support we needed to feel ready. Does that mean that everything was smooth sailing? Of course not! But when it came down to it, everything that Monica had prepared us for unraveled pretty much as predicted. It’s already becoming a slight blur (isn’t that how women keep doing it??) but I know that I would have been far less prepared, confident, and comfortable without Monica the Doula.

Here’s Monica, baby Rowan, and I at our postnatal home visit about a week after birth 🙂               If you’re interested in learning more about Monica, visit hamptondoula.com.

First Annual Edible Business Conference

The new Food Lab at Stony Brook Southampton presents the first annual Edible Business Conference June 5-7th, bringing together today’s leading thinkers in food business, media, and policy. The conference is organized around the interests and needs of people working at all links in the food chain—from farmers to foodtech startups, investors to next-wave food enthusiasts, policy makers to agribusiness executive.

BreadThe panels, presentations and other events at the conference are as much about economic development and successful business models as they are about the latest trends and techniques in delivering sustainable farm-to-table, healthy and delicious food and beverages. This inaugural event kicks off with a tasting at the Southampton campus on Friday night, featuring food and drink makers assembled by Edible East End magazine and entertainment by DJ Carlos Lama. Saturday’s agenda includes engaging discussions and presentations on food business, meat and seafood, and the alcohol industry, informative and unusual tastings, and a meal prepared by East End chefs. Sunday features a morning networking session as well as a discussion of socially-purposed food businesses.

Attendees will have access to affordable accommodations on campus, as well as guides to enjoying food and drink experiences around the conference. Tickets for the three-day conference are $259. For more information, visit thefoodlab.org or contact Kathleen.Russo@stonybrook.edu.

photo(191)Offering at least three classes a day, seven days a week, twelve months a year, this barre studio is here to stay. Conveniently located in Southampton village, Kaitlin, Leslie, and Patti, excitedly opened the studio to fill a void in fitness out East by bringing their favorite workout to their favorite place, all year round! Like-minded locals can appreciate their welcoming approach, reliable schedule, fun atmosphere, convenient location, and dependable full-body workout delivered in every class.

Pure Barre is the perfect mix of strength and stretch, fun and vigor. Unlike some other hot group-fitness classes sweeping the nation today, Pure Barre focuses on precise movements to strengthen muscles and the mind-body connection simultaneously. The low-impact moves can really be done anywhere, but the sequence of the Pure Barre method ensures a heightened sense of awareness and appreciation for this important connection. Concentrating on nothing but these movements allows guests to block out the chaos of life outside the door, creating a tranquil energy throughout the studio. The 55-minute workout targets all of those trouble zones head to toe, building long, lean muscles. While the technique stays consistent, the fun music and choreography sequence prohibit boredom and plateau. While you can always rely on that 90 second plank, working your booty ’til it hurts, and abs for days, the new routine keeps us coming back for more.

Christopher’s Run 2014

Get ready, get set for the 7th annual Christopher’s Run!Logo_Final w-Number(1)The annual 5k run/walk, Chinese auction, and fun community gathering will take place on Saturday, June 7th. Christopher’s Run is always a great morning in Southampton, as The Christopher Lesta Fund rallies the community in celebration and remembrance of “the little man with the big smile,” Christopher Lesta.

Christopher was born with Hunter Syndrome, a rare and untreatable genetic disorder caused by the body’s inability to produce certain necessary enzymes. Christopher passed away in 2007 and June 2008 marked the First Annual Christopher’s 5K Run/Walk to remember Christopher Lesta. The 5k begins in Agawam Park in Southampton at 9:30am and takes participants through a beautiful tour of Southampton village. This year, the Christopher Lesta Foundation will also be hosting their Chinese Auction both at the race and on the following Saturday, June 14th, at the North Sea Community House. Proceeds from this year’s event will benefit the Pediatric Blood & Marrow Transplant Program at Duke University Medical Center. Donations will go toward helping the children and families on the Transplant Unit, which had a great impact during Christopher’s life.
