One Healthy Young Entrepreneur

Introducing the dynamic sibling duo behind Fair Harbor Clothing, Caroline and Jake Danehy. Inspired by the beaches of Fire Island, these two created their line of boardshorts out of none other but recycled plastic bottles. Inspired by their favorite local beaches, (and the greater good of our planet) these two are recycling wellness in a whole new way. Here’s their story…

FH1

  1. Tell us about yourself and how life as you know it came to be.

Growing up in Westchester, NY, my family and I were fortunate enough to be an hour away from Fair Harbor, Fire Island – so naturally, our summers were spent on the beach. There are only a few rules of the island: no cars, no shoes, and hardly any clothing (just a bathing suit, of course). As we grew up, and our schedules became busier with sports, school, and other chaos, our trips out to the island became fewer, but our memories never faded. Fire Island was, and will always be, my “happy place”. However, over the years, we have started to notice more and more plastic waste appearing on the shores and in the ocean, and it really bothered me.

I will be a Sophomore at Colgate University this fall and my brother, Jake, just graduated from Colgate in May. As a Geography major, Jake learned a lot about resource allocation and overconsumption, and called me in spring of  ’14 with an idea that he had to make a product that is both consumer and environmentally friendly. With our generation becoming more eco-conscious, we feel we have a responsibility to make a difference in the way people approach consumerism – and what better way to do it than by turning plastic bottles into boardshorts, connecting it with our childhood summers spent out in Fair Harbor. Within a few months Fair Harbor Clothing was born. While it definitely isn’t a glamorous process, we are very proud of how far we have come today.

In March 2016, we launched our second line, including seven new boardshort styles and five new shirts. Each of our boardshorts directly recycles 11 plastic bottles and all of our shirts are made form 100% organic cotton.

FH@This whole adventure with Fair Harbor has been an incredible learning experience for us, and I feel so grateful to be a part of it. Wellness has always been a passion of my ours, so by the nature of our healthy lifestyle, those ideals have seamlessly become embedded into our brand. For example, this upcoming weekend we will be selling Fair Harbor at the Nantucket Yoga Festival!

2. What’s something you overcame and how?

I always dreamed about playing college lacrosse since I was a little girl, however, my body had other plans for me; I started to develop chronic stress fractures in both of my shins in 8th grade. During the summer going into my junior year of high school I was diagnosed with my 6th set of stress fractures and had to hang up my cleats for good. Lacrosse had been a part of my identity since I was 5 and all of a sudden it was gone. However, over time I started to realize that where one door closes another opens. Since I couldn’t do any activity that required running – or fast walking for that matter – and I started practicing yoga. Slowly, I began to develop a deep passion for it. I became more aware of my body and my confidence started coming back. I believe feeling confident starts from within and then radiates outward, and I found that yoga was the perfect environment for me to work on my inner self, while still exercising my body in a way that didn’t harm it.

Since then I have wanted to get my yoga certification, and this spring, I realized that there was no time like the present. I found a yoga studio about 10 minutes away with a summer teacher training and signed up for it. I started my training in May and it has been one of the most amazing, liberating and self-confidence building experiences I have had. One of the most incredible aspects of my training so far is realizing how much power we have over our thoughts, our bodies, and our energy.

3. What is your favorite recipe? workout? Favorite weekend activity? Favorite part of the business?

I try to practice moderation on a daily basis, something I believe that is key to a healthy lifestyle; which includes everything from the food I nourish my body with to how I move. Cooking is one of my favorite activities, and I love spending time in the kitchen with my mom preparing meals. That being said, when I was seven my family and I took a trip out to Jackson Hole, WY, where I quickly became conscious that the meat that I was eating was once living. While I wanted to be a vegetarian, my parents needed to make sure that I ate enough protein since I was so young, so I agreed to eat chicken and fish. Over the years I have dedicated a lot of time toward food, and learning about nutrition; I think it’s incredibly interesting. I have so many foods/recipes that I love– such such as spaghetti squash with chicken meatballs, salmon & lentils, and of course blueberry pancakes because who doesn’t?!

My favorite workout is a really great core yoga class and a long walk with my mom, sister and dog on a beautiful sunny day. I try to get outside as much as I can and move – especially in the summer!

My favorite part of Fair Harbor is definitely working with my brother on something that we both are so dedicated to. We have spent countless hours working on it together and it is incredible to see all of the progress that we have made.

4. As young entrepreneurs, business owners, students, and part of the Hamptons (Fire Island) community, etc. how do you maintain balance in your life?

Scheduling is key to balance because it helps me keep track of my daily responsibilities. Without it, I tend to get overwhelmed. However, since Jake and I are so passionate about the work that we are doing most of the time it doesn’t feel like “work”.

5. Any great healthy/balance tips for other busy folks?

Moderation and mapping out my upcoming week are two lifestyle tips that really help me. Fair Harbor and my yoga certification definitely consume a lot of my time this summer, so finding time to relax is hard sometimes but definitely necessary!

6. What food items do you always have?

My favorite breakfast lately has been an omelet (one whole egg, two egg whites), sautéed onions, spinach, peppers – topped with fresh salsa and hot sauce. Other food items I always have are: green tea and peanut butter Think Thin bars (they taste like Snickers!).

7. What is your favorite indulgence? (can be edible or not)

My favorite indulgence is being at the beach reading a really good book.

8. How do you make health a priority in your home/life?

I believe that we have complete control over our health and how we treat our bodies – a concept that is so powerful, yet most people take for granted. Therefore, how we nourish, rest and move our bodies is extremely important, so I always make my health a priority. Sleep is also a key part of my wellness routine. I know that when I am tired I don’t function as well – trust me, ask my brother!

9. What is your FAVORITE thing about the Fire Island? Favorite place? Favorite memory?

Remarkably, no matter how much time passes, Fire Island always remains the same. I have countless childhood memories taking outdoor showers, jumping off the lifeguard stand and early morning fishing adventures. Almost every morning, we would all go down to the dock around 7 am, before most people were awake, and fish for snapper with bamboo poles. After fishing, we took the fish back to the house and made snapper and eggs. These were the simple joys of living on the island for the summer – something that makes me smile every time I think back to those days. With each decision that we make with Fair Harbor, we think back to our childhood memories, in effort to recreate the lifestyle with our brand.

The Clean and the Dirty

The “dirty dozen” and “clean 15” are two lists I refer to very often. While we all know that buying organic is always best, it’s often much more difficult and not to mention (ok, I’m going to mention) costly. It helps to save time, money, and health to keep these lists in mind while shopping. Knowing which items are often pumped with pesticides and those that typically are not gives us a guide of where to spend a little extra mula and when it’s not so necessary. Here ya go, folks. The clean and the dirty…not that there are not a dozen or 15 because I’ve found some variety and wanted to include them all, regardless of the catchy rhymes.

One Healthy Barista

Enjoy this interview with Jason Belkin, espresso lover and owner of a business we all know and love, Hampton Coffee Company! Read with a hot cup of your favorite brew in hand if you wish!

photo-about-011. Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did Hampton Coffee Company come to be and was this something you always wanted to do? How is HCC different from other coffee shops?

Hampton Coffee Company started 19 years ago, so when I was a college student at NYU, I worked for the original owner one summer as a barista/assistant manager. I thought it was the best summer job ever! Since there was only one Starbucks on all of Long Island at that time, specialty coffee was still very new on the East Coast, so HCC was a very unique place. I graduated and started working in my career field of journalism and public relations. One day, I found out that Hampton Coffee Company was for sale and I thought it was now or never to take a chance on my dream of owning an espresso bar.

Since then, my wife and I have grown this single sleepy espresso bar and small roastery into a bustling little mini-chain of espresso bars and cafes in The Hamptons with wholesale coffee partners throughout the state. I always knew that HCC was a special and unique business. We treat each and every customer as a VIP and take care to produce only top quality coffee and food. We value our staff and the company’s positive role in the community.

2. Are you a coffee lover yourself? Can you share any physical benefits of drinking coffee?

I love coffee. Lately, I especially enjoy our Westhampton Beach Blend and our new Southampton Organic Blend. Coffee has a lot of great health benefits. If you follow us on social media, you will see us posting all the time about the greatness of the coffee bean. Of course, you shouldn’t overdo anything, but coffee has shown to reduce the onset of Alzheimers and other diseases and increase short-term memory in addition to boosting metabolism and waking us up. Coffee also has lots of antioxidants, similar to green tea! In fact, just the other day on the radio, Dr. Oz said to skip the harmful-to-your-body energy drinks and chemicals and just stick to an old-fashioned cup of coffee to stay alert and improve your mood.

coffee beans and brewed3. How does Hampton Coffee fit in to the healthy Hamptons lifestyle?

Hampton Coffee Company is an important part of an overall healthy Hamptons lifestyle. Our menu has something for everyone, whether you’re fueling up for a workout or a local 5k, indulging in comforting baked goods, following a certain diet, or just picking up a cup of coffee. My wife and I, and our staff, are members of the community like everyone else and we have built a business in and for the community to serve the values of the Hamptons people. Customers stop in to and from the gym or park their bikes outside. We fit into an active Hamptons routine. Health is a part of life in the Hamptons and we have everything you need for a healthy day.

Folks can kickstart their day with a healthy breakfast or stop by after a work out for a fresh fruit smoothie – nothing but real fruit! Of course, you’ve got to have some baked goods and sweets to go with your coffee. Even our made-from-scratch Krispy Treats are low-fat, our Raspberry Oat Bars are healthy and all-natural, and all our expertly-prepared espresso bar drinks can be ordered with skim milk and sugar-free syrup. We understand that our customers rely us on for dependable coffee and fresh food that won’t break the bank or the waistline!

4. What is your favorite workout? Favorite family activity?

I am a big fan of Core Dynamics in Water Mill, although my trainer, Jim McWinnie, will tell you for sure that I need to get in there more…much, much, more. It’s really a challenge to make the gym a part of my life with two kids under 3 and a busy, growing business, but it is going to be my resolution for 2014!

We are constantly running around with the kids, so that keeps us active. My favorite family activity when my kids get older is going to be going to Disney World, I used to love going when I was younger with my family. Disney World is the best place anywhere. In the meantime, we love Safari Adventure in Riverhead, Target (they have Play Doh!), and we have a great time in our own backyard having fun. My three-year-old, Cian, loves Play Doh and Legos and our little guy, Oran, loves balls, so we keep busy!

5. As a business owner, father, husband, and member of the community how do you maintain balance in your life?

It is super hard to keep balance in my life, but to be honest, I think I actually do a pretty good job (except for the going to the gym part!) Balancing work and family can be tough, but it’s a must. I do usually have two days off which I spend doing family things. On vacations, I forget about work, which allows me to focus on family and also rest and recharge myself. My family is more important to me than my business. If push came to shove, I would choose them over Hampton Coffee Company in a second. I think that’s a real important perspective to have and I have to credit my wife, Theresa, for reminding me that the reason I work hard is so that I have time on my days off for my family. Although running the business is a lot, I am home virtually every night since my kids were born.

6. Any great healthy/balance tips for other busy folks?

One trick I have since it’s hard to eat right when you’re busy at work and surrounded by delicious food is that I always share my lunch at work with someone so we’re both only eating half! I have been trying to keep a refillable bottle of water right in front of me on my desk at work to remind me to drink. And I try to remind myself that I can only do one thing at a time. Of course, it’s always helpful to try to carve out a date night every week or two to get away for a few hours and do something outside of the family “routine.”

7. What food items do you always keep in your house?

I am addicted to Tangerine juice lately (I dilute it 50/50 with filtered water.) We always have peanut butter on hand as well as yogurt, apple juice, cereal, eggs, bread, cheese, and milk for the kids. Dinner may include frozen shrimp, tacos for “Taco Night!” or fish sticks – not minced! 🙂

8. What is your favorite indulgence?

I love filet mignon with béarnaise sauce. If that’s on the menu, I treat myself. Other favorites include pumpkin pancakes with real maple syrup, boneless spare ribs, (well done) shrimp cocktail, pigs in a blanket (I know I’m not alone on that one!) and, Mountain Dew (less and less, though.)

9. How do you make health a priority in your family?

It’s definitely more of a challenge with two little kids. They come first, so when we come home, our main goal is to get dinner for them on the table as quick as possible so we can move on to baths and then bed. Although it’s a lot harder to find the time to focus on healthy dinners for us, having kids has started us on some new healthy eating habits. We are starting to eliminate soda from our house so that as the kids get older, it won’t be here for them to drink, as with all other artificially sweetened drinks. Having kids is also encouraging us to serve more well-balanced meals, so of course we’re benefiting from that as well. No more eating take-out in front of a movie on the couch! Although after a rough night with the kids, a pint of Haagen Daz sometimes mysteriously disappears!

10. What is your FAVORITE thing about living in the Hamptons?

I’m so glad you asked, this just came up the other day when I was talking with one of my customers. We were saying how lucky we are to live in The Hamptons. It truly is such a unique and special place; I’m even wiling to go out on a limb and say on of the best places in the world to live. We really are so fortunate. Not to say everything is perfect here, but we have forests and oceans within a few miles of each other, lots of wildlife, beaches, fishing, parks, amazing schools, so much to do, stores, restaurants, and main streets that most people only see in movies. Plus, we’re so close to New York City, which brings an eclectic group of people who call the Hamptons home.

Where else can you dine with billionaires and farmers in the same room? Or pass a potato trailer and a mansion on your way to work? We have so much fresh food and so many wonderful cafés, markets, and artisans. If you’re a go-getter there’s ample opportunity for you and if you’re an outgoing and resourceful student, this is a great place to grow up and start on a successful path.

My favorite thing about living in The Hamptons has to be Hampton Coffee Company, of course! Seriously, if it wasn’t for Hampton Coffee, I wouldn’t be living here. I wouldn’t be raising my family here. I wouldn’t have met all the wonderful co-workers and suppliers and customers over the past 14 years. I wouldn’t have been able to provide jobs for hundreds of people over the years either. I wouldn’t have been able to support more than 100 local organizations every year. I am so proud that Hampton Coffee Company has become such an important part of what is The Hamptons.

One Healthy Breakdown: Thank goodness this man followed his dreams, the Hamptons absolutely wouldn’t be the same without HCC!

One Healthy Mom

Enjoy this refreshingly honest and inspirational interview with local family life teacher, parenting coach, and amazing mother of five, Anastasia Gavalas!

meee1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am a mom, family life teacher, author of WING IT: 6 Simple Steps to Succeed as a Modern Day Parent, and founder of the WING IT PROJECT. I live in Bridgehampton with my husband and five children (ages 15, 13, 11, 9, & 7.) Helping parents make life with children easier is such gratifying work and making a difference in the world through the WING IT PROJECT is something I’ve always dreamed of doing. I live my life in a wholehearted way where I am happy with myself and confident with the choices I make.

2. How did ‘life as you know it’ come to be?

After I had my 2nd child I felt exhausted and couldn’t get out of bed. I was quickly diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, an autoimmune disease, that had been manifesting in my body for years. I took the prescribed medicine and it just didn’t help much. I kept plugging along but felt overwhelmed and emotionally drained. In 2003, we decided to move to the Hamptons and found out we were expecting baby #4… surprise! With all that was going on, on top of not having family or friends around for support, I quickly learned that I needed to change. I began searching for alternative methods that would support what I knew in my heart was best. I tried acupuncture, homeopathic remedies, and a new overall wellness approach for my health and for my family. It was out of necessity that I found a more organic way of living life. This included making my well-being a priority as well as teaching my children to be more independent.

3. What’s something you overcame and how?

My need to do everything perfectly and my fear-based reactions. Once I was able to recognize that the display of the “perfect” children or my role as the “perfect” mother was wearing me out and preventing me from living authentically, I let those ideas go. Perfection is based on other people’s judgements. I made a decision to separate myself from the concept of perfection to be happy. I practiced meditation starting ten minutes a day, carved out me-time every single day, and (just like I explain in the chapter, “Build Your Village” in WING IT) I began to surround myself with more supportive people who encourage my growth.

4. What is your favorite workout? Favorite family activity?

Dancing is one of my favorite things to do and I mix it with a brisk walk a few times a week. I get bored easily with exercising so I need to change my workout routine up all the time. As far as a family we like to swim (although 2 out of 5 kids hate the beach – not sure how that happened?!?) take bike rides, and go skiing. I have high-energy kids who are constantly moving and ready for adventure at all times so, we’re always moving & grooving.

5. As a career woman, mother, and wife, and how do you maintain balance in your life?

First, I redefined the concept of balance. Standing upright at all times isn’t realistic or worth the effort. But, remaining focused on a goal with a trusting, more joyful attitude will help balance appear in the most challenging of roles. I believe balance is about remaining flexible and knowing that, just as the mightiest of trees will bend and sway with the winds of world, so will mothers who strive for balance. At the end of the day, people just have to appreciate the flexibility and positions experienced.

5. Any great healthy tips for busy moms?

Yes, take time for yourself: get enough sleep, eat good food, sit down and take time to meditate so you can be the woman you were meant to be and the best mom for your children.

6. What food items do you always keep in the house?

Fresh vegetables and fruits – organic as much as possible, olive oil, different cheeses, good meats, gluten-free foods, and always a bottle of chilled champagne for those special occasions…because moms are people too!

7. What is your favorite indulgence?

Drinking tea in the morning, sleeping in (that’s happened maybe three times in the past 10 years… but, a girl can dream!) and long hot showers (alone.)

8. How do you make health a priority in your family without going overboard?

Practicing being healthy is a lifestyle choice. We spend a lot of time outdoors. I talk to my kids about nutritional balance. Four of my children are responsible for cooking one night per week. So, every night, we have a really good, balanced, colorful meal. Children learn by what they observe and I try to demonstrate a healthy lifestyle with the choices I make instead of badgering them with health talks.

9. What is your FAVORITE thing about living in the Hamptons?

The ease of living out here. There is an organic way to life. I love the diversity of people and the experiences it provides. It is a really special place to live with the most amazingly kind people. It’s a great place to raise children because you can be as tuned-in to what’s happening or tuned-out of the busyness of life as much as you want to be.

Apple Cider Vinegar is a MUST

Apple cider vinegar has super powers. Seriously, this stuff works wonders promoting bone health, clearer skin, stronger hair, better digestion, more energy, balanced pH levels, sinus health, weight management, whiter teeth, heartburn, and finally, catching flies! Yup, you read right. Apple cider vinegar is a MUST have!

applecidvin

All of these amazing health benefits can be attained by simply drinking this stuff! Not a lot, just a little goes a long way. Go with raw and organic for maximum results. While some take a tablespoon or a shot of apple cider vin daily or twice daily, I prefer to add a bit to water with lemon juice for a morning and nightly cleanser (warm water even doubles for a bedtime “tea.”) At first taste, you may not be hooked, but the benefits are countless and that sour taste will grow on ya. Feel free to add a drop of honey or stevia if need be to get it down, but eventually, you won’t mind the taste (trust me!)

Apple cider vin does wonders for the whole body. You’ll wake up feeling fresher because this stuff aids the body in its natural processes: from digestion to germ-fighting. Whether you have a sensitive stomach or not, apple cider vin will work magic, from lowering glucose levels (super powerful for diabetics) to preventing heartburn. Use apple cider vin in salad dressing or other recipes calling for vinegar. Not only will you notice physical effects, apple cider vin promotes alkalinity over time, which prevents cancer from forming. Yay for alkalinity!

You can also use apple cider vinegar as shampoo, facial cleanser, household cleaner, sunburn relief, teeth whitener, deodorant, and the anti-fruit fly savior! Just use as is on hair and skin. You can even add a little to your bath or dip your feet in to detox the skin for an at-home pedicure. Use an old spray bottle for a natural household cleaner. Finally, apple cider vin saved my kitchen from a recent fruit fly attack, long after the fruit was gone. To catch those little buggers, add a little bit of dish soap to a shallow bowl or plate of apple cider vin and add water so the mixture bubbles. Cover with saran wrap and poke holes with a fork. Hours later, you’ll have floating fruit flies and less flying around your kitchen! (A huge thank you to those who suggested this solution during my recent fruit fly freakout!)

One Healthy Breakdown: Bet you’re heading to the grocery store if you don’t already have this stuff around, apple cider vin is a MUST.

Healthy Child Healthy WORLD

photo 5When Healthy Child Healthy World hosts a luncheon in the Hamptons, I become a lady who lunches for sure. Healthy Child is a non-profit that brings companies and communities together for collective advocacy for a healthier, safer world for generations to come. Healthy Child Healthy World was founded by James and Nancy Chuda, who lost their daughter to cancer linked to pesticide exposure in utero, a tragedy that could have been prevented. Did you know that 60% of what is applied to our skin topically is absorbed in the bloodstream? Everything we breath and touch has an effect on our health as well as our kid’s health. Gigi Lee Chang, the CEO of Healthy Child Healthy World, put it best: children make up 25% of our population and 100% of our future.

photo 4Sadly, this will be the first generation of kids not to live longer than their parents due to toxicity, obesity, and genetically engineered food. The mission to reverse this awful realization unites people all over the country. Today, I lunched with Gary Hirshberg of Stonyfield Farms, Gigi Lee Chang of Healthy Child Healthy World, Tiffani Theissen, (yes, Saved by the Bell) and LOTS of fabulous and interesting women, all of whom share a genuine value for making the world a healthier place. Who can’t get behind that?

The day was beautiful and the setting was perfect. Of course, the food was delicious and nutritious: kale salad, red quinoa, black bean burgers, salmon, corn, and Chloe’s Soft Serve Fruit for dessert. YUM. During lunch, we listened to an interesting panel discussion from Gary Hirshberg, Gregg Renfrew of Beautycounter, Robin Wilson of Healthy Space Interior Design, Dr. Richard Ash, The Ash Center, and Christina Anderson of Elizabeth Street. The point driven home is that we wrongly assume, as Americans, that when we shop, whether it’s at the grocery store, a high-end department store, pharmacy, or even farmer’s market, what we purchase is safe. From food to makeup, household cleaning products, sunscreen, clothing, etc. Unfortunately, our system is not built upon preventative healthcare, so our industry standards are sadly sub-par. Doctors are trained to fix health problems, not to prevent them. Until this changes, that’s where we come in.

While the mission of making the world a healthier, safer place, both today and in the future, seems totally overwhelming on a personal level, we can do our part. Gary Hirshberg was refreshingly insistent on making small changes. Collectively, this adds up. Don’t be overwhelmed if you can’t buy all organic foods, but do what you can. Buying organic is not only a step towards better health, it’s a step in the right direction for our progress as a nation. Each and every purchase made in the United States speaks volumes for our future. The things we choose to buy sends out the message that we prefer and support that product, that store, that brand. Buying organic, whole foods gives society a  ‘yes’ that what we want is healthy food. In turn, each time we buy fast or processed food, we’re sending out the message that we support our current food industry. While many argue, myself included, that the price of local, fresh, unprocessed food is expensive, in the long run, we are investing in our future. Eventually, enough “votes” for real food will lower pricing. Increased demand forces a bigger supply. Simply put, we vote with our wallet, so one thing you can do is to use your vote for good.

If we want to make the world a healthier, safer place, it’s time to start making small changes, taking baby steps. This all starts with education. We’ve got to educate ourselves because we can’t really trust our current food, medical, or pharmaceutical industries. We must continue to research for ourselves, because things are constantly changing and new information is released daily. If you want to learn something new today, check out Healthy Child Healthy World. If you feel strongly about demanding the labeling of genetically engineered foods, check out Gary Hirshberg’s movement JustLabelIt.org and sign the petition to let those running your state, and our country, that food labeling is important. What else can we do? One suggestion, something we can all easily do is to take our shoes off upon entering the house, our own home and others. 85% of pesticides found in the home are brought in on the bottoms of our shoes. Another was starting with a nylon, instead of vinyl, shower curtain, and replace household cleaners with natural products next time you run out. Basically, just start reading labels and be more aware of what you’re putting inside your home, and your body.

In fact, if you take action today, in some way, (whether it’s doing five minutes of research on the web, leaving those shoes at the door, purchasing organic produce, or just pledging to become more aware) you could win a Weleda Body Wash and Body Lotion Kit! Weleda’s products are certified 100% natural and the first ingredient is water. If you’d like this Weleda revitalizing kit, just let us know in a Facebook comment on One Healthy Hamptons’ Facebook page with one way you already or plan to make a small change towards a healthier world. All comments will be considered and winner will be picked Monday, August 26th at noon via Random.org.

photo(85)One Healthy Breakdown: The U.S. is one of the only developed countries that does not require the labeling of genetically engineered foods. That fact alone is enough to get educated today.

Love Grace Juice Cleanse – Sunlight in a Bottle

I recently tried Love Grace Foods‘ three-day juice cleanse. This was my first ever juice cleanse and guess what? I survived! …a little cleaner, greener, and lighter from all of that bottled sunlight! Love Grace shipped me (door to door service from NYC!) five full juices plus a ginger bomb for each day. Allow me to introduce you to the colorful wonders: Super Cider, Purify, Restore, Green Sunshine, and Longevity Tonic. With names like these, you know it’s made with love.

lovegraceAlthough I liked some juices more than others, I loved the variety of organic ingredients. I loved knowing that I was truly eating (well, drinking) a rainbow, with about 20-30 varieties of fresh produce daily, way more than I would ingest normally. Although the cleanse provides a calorie deficit, each and every one has nutritional value and is instantly absorbed due to the nature of Love Grace’s juicing. This isn’t a ‘get skinny fast’ cleanse, it’s SO much more. Love Grace’s ingredients don’t just flush the body out, but also replenish the good stuff we need long-term, like cancer and Alzheimer fighters.

Juicing is detoxifying, cleansing, rejuvenating, and inspiring. This cleanse was just the refreshing kick I needed. Speaking of kick, these cold-pressed, organic, raw, juices pack a powerful punch. Like that blink a few times, woah that’ll wake ya right up! Especially that ‘Ginger Bomb Elixer,’ it’s packed with anti-bacterial and antiviral ingredients to rev the metabolism and up your energy, preventing the body from slowing down due to the lack of calories. The shot is super intense, yet totally refreshing.

photo 1 My favorites included the Purify, (breakfast of super greens sweetened with coconut water) Super Cider (apple, carrot goodness) and, of course, the Chocolate Superfood Smoothie (banana, flax, cacoa, goji berries, dates, and more.) This Chocolate Smoothie literally got me through the cleanse, it made it all worth it – the chocolately light at the end of the tunnel. Luckily, Love Grace allows customers to customize their cleanse and purchase juice a la carte. Good news for me, now that I’ve tried them all out and picked my faves. Hello, chocolate for dinner everyday.

photo 3In all seriousness though, these daily protein smoothies provide the sustenance an active body needs. Made of way more than just produce, they’re thick and satisfying. The superfood smoothies and the ginger bombs are what set Love Grace apart from all of other juice cleanses on the market, and that I like.

The other huge perk of juice cleansing was the convenience factor. With a fridge stocked with juice, I didn’t have to think about grocery shopping, meal planning, or cooking. I happened to be attending an all day Re:TREAT while I was cleansing, which conveniently allowed me to focus 100% of my attention, instead of having to think about prepping and packing meals. I cleansed in every sense of the word; physically and mentally.

So, I bet you’re dying to know: was I hungry? Yes. Not even going to lie, at times I was starving, but not to the point that it effected my body other than a grumbling tummy. I didn’t get headaches or lightheaded, not even from the torture of replacing my normal morning coffee with peppermint tea. I didn’t go to bed starving and I made it through intense workouts just fine.

So, was it worth the hunger pangs, lack of snackin’, and coffee cravings? Yes. It was worth it to wake up feeling lighter, cleaner and leaner throughout the entire day, and it gave me a new appreciation for everything I put in my mouth. Plus, the results didn’t reverse themselves (even after my much-anticipated post-cleanse breakfast of *healthy* pancakes.)

One Healthy Breakdown: Yes, I’d absolutely juice with Love Grace again, but next time around, I’ll probably customize my own cleanse. If you’re looking for an easy, reliable first cleanse or even a long-term healthy upgrade, (made with love) check out Love Grace Foods.

Bliss Sleep Center: Sleep Healthier

Raise your hand if you don’t want a blissful night’s sleep. Yeah, I thought so. We know sleep is important, but we don’t really ever talk or hear about ‘healthier sleep.’ We watch what we eat and exercise, but why don’t we focus more on how we spend a THIRD of our life? Why is that? Sleep. It’s BIG and we’re going to talk about it.

Getting ample sleep has HUGE benefits, from a longer lifespan to weight-management, mood, increased energy, decreased stress, better attention span and even improved creativity! We all know we’re in a better mood and ready to tackle the day after a good night’s sleep, but sleep is a crucial factor in your everyday health.

Getting ample sleep has HUGE benefits, from a longer lifespan to better memory, weight-management, mood, energy, less stress, better attention span and even creativity! We all know we’re in a better mood and ready to tackle the day after a good night’s sleep, but sleep is a crucial factor in health longevity.

Beth over at Bliss Sleep Center invited One Healthy Hamptons for a tour of the new store and boy did we talk sleep! Here are Beth’s top tips for a fabulous night’s sleep:

  • know what you’re sleeping on/in. The chemicals in your mattress or bedding could be keeping you up or may be causing other health risks.
  • maintain a consistent sleeping schedule for bed time and wake up.
  • relax before bed to wind down physically and mentally.  This includes turning off your electronic devices.  Instead read a book before bed.
  • make comfort a priority. Everyone’s sleep needs are different so customize your sleep system for your ultimate comfort.
  • exercise regularly, it will help you sleep and vice versa.
  • eat healthy (There are certain foods that actually help you sleep better.  For example blueberries.)
  • leave time for digestion after dinner.
  • avoid caffeine, alcohol, and too much protein prior to bed, it will keep your body up.

Beth Lee Schlendorf just started Bliss Sleep Center in Water Mill to help customers much like herself to achieve healthier sleep. Rewind about a year ago, Beth found herself excited to use her brand new mattress, when she read on the label that the mattress must ‘air out’ for 48 hours before use. As Beth slowly became overwhelmed with the smell of chemicals coming from her new mattress, she began to do some research and was blown away with what she found. The ingredients used in typical bedding are poorly regulated and can cause cancer, reproductive issues, learning disabilities in kids, and who knows what else. Beth is a believer in healthy eating and daily exercise, so she started wondering about the effects of sleeping on this mattress that was oozing with chemicals…and what else around the home, specifically the bedroom, can make for healthier living. Enter, Bliss Sleep Center, a one stop shop for all your sleeping needs.

photo 1As Beth further researched, she came to the conclusion that organic bedding was the only option. Only, which bed? Where to buy? Where to try? Although she wanted healthy and natural, Beth acknowledged the most important factor in sleep: comfort. She wanted to try out the products before purchasing, but she was at a loss, hence her idea to open the store and help others learn how to improve their own sleep. Bliss Sleep Center showcases a wide variety of mattresses, pillows, sheets, children’s furniture, cribs, duvets, and more. I got the grand tour and even tested out some mattresses to give you all the fun facts!

Bliss Sleep Center is the only ‘healthy bedding’ store throughout Long Island that allows you to see, touch, and test the products firsthand. Beth offers a variety of price points, her favorite being the Royal-Pedic (which Beth refers to as the “Bentley of Mattresses,” which reclines and has a built-in massaging feature.) Everything is custom to the customer’s preference, they even have mattresses that allow to be customized differently for each side of the bed. The wool duvet covers regulate heat for all those couples who can’t agree on temperature. Beth sleeps cold and her husband sleeps hot; the wool duvet both cools and warms accordingly, both on a mattress custom for their own comfort-preferences.

Everything comes with tons of options, from comfort to colors and patterns. The kids stuff is adorable as well, there’s definitely no sacrificing of ‘cuteness’ for quality.

photo 5So, what really is the difference? This bedding is made without common industry ingredients such as PBDE’s, (Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers aka flame retardants) petroleum-based foam, GMO’s, pesticides, hermacides, etc. Scary stuff!

Some of the benefits Beth and other natural ‘sleep converters’ have experienced? More energy, healthier skin (they don’t call it beauty sleep for nothin’!) decreased feelings of stress, anxiety and depression, fewer headaches, mind clarity, consistently sleeping through the night, less back pain, milder allergy symptoms,…and, lastly, lots more reports of oversleeping. Oops! These products are also naturally dust-mite repellent, hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial, mold, and mildew resistant.

As I said to Beth, when I can afford a ‘sleeping renovation,’ I’ll be back to Bliss immediately! She understands the commitment and suggests making changes as life allows you to. When you’re ready for a change, or when it’s time to replace things at home, do your homework. Eat healthy, sleep healthy, and re-examine your home for toxicity. Aren’t we glad Beth happened to buy that new mattress, do the research for us, make this a priority for her own family and now for yours?

One Healthy Breakdown: we evaluate our food and activity, it’s time we sleep healthier too! Stop in to Bliss Sleep Center to chat sleep with Beth!
