July’s Tiny Change: Creative Hydration

This post is part of Kale & Chocolate’s #12tinychanges challenge. Each month, we’re implementing one super small, super doable change…over a year, it really adds up! You can read about it here and share your progress on instagram – tag @kaleandchocolate and @hamptonskiley with the hashtag #12tinychanges for a chance to win some cool prizes!

If you’ve heard it once, you’ve heard it a thousand times: we should all be drinking more water. And yet here we are – many of us walking around in a state of low-grade, chronic dehydration.

hydrate

How do you know if you’re dehydrated? Perhaps you’re feeling a bit unfocused or sluggish, maybe you feel hungry all the time, or your skin isn’t looking its best. It’s entirely possible that you aren’t actually hungry, or unfocused, or having skin problems; chances are, you’re thirsty!

Our bodies are 65% water, and our brains are 73% water. No wonder we feel better when we stay hydrated! Yet it’s easy to forget to drink in the midst of our busy and active lives. This month, we’re going to fill up our cups and keep our bodies happy with more water and better hydration. If you’re not exactly keen on chugging eight glasses of lukewarm tap water every day, read on!

Make it fun (and delicious!)
Not everyone loves plain old water. If you aren’t a fan, don’t worry – there are many other ways to stay hydrated! Toss together a pitcher of spa waters (they’re so easy and colorful!) or load up the freezer with fruity ice cubes and add them to your water or herbal iced tea. Save your leftover smoothies, filling up popsicle molds, and create beautiful (and hydrating) smoothie pops!

Drink easy.
If you spend most of your time in your office, get a pretty glass that you can keep on your desk. If you’re always in the car, find a reusable water bottle and don’t leave the house without it!

Drink a superfood snack
Chia seeds are a miracle food, especially when it comes to keeping us hydrated. These teeny, tiny seeds are hydrophilic, which means that they can absorb approximately 10 to 12 times their weight in water. This powerhouse superfood can also prolong hydration and retain electrolytes in body fluids, protecting against dehydration.

Incorporating chia seeds into your diet is incredibly easy: simply stir a heaping tablespoon to your morning juice or smoothie, and you’re set! For a real treat, try peppermint mocha chia pudding or have a super yummy energy bite!

Drink your eats (no, really!)
Hydration comes in many forms, not just from water! All raw fruits and vegetables contain water, particularly cucumbers, watermelon, tomatoes, celery, and radishes. Try this watermelon cucumber cooler on for size!

HydrationPost

Drink your potassium
Why do we need electrolytes, including potassium, to stay hydrated? Our muscles use them with water to make sure that the electrical charges in our bodies work properly. Potassium balances the fluids and electrolytes in our bodies. All this is to say: eat plenty of bananas and drink some coconut water. These two foods are inexpensive, widely available, and they’ll help you maintain the proper nutrients after a workout or on a hot summer day.

See? Hydration can be fun and delicious! And once we fill up with the proper amount of fluid, our minds and bodies are so much more effective. We think better, look better, and feel better.

Berry Good Oat Bars

Introducing the berry good oat bar, star of the snack scene and best blueberry- loaded breakfast in town! Loaded with nutrients, these babies are chewy like a brownie, but much healthier, with the perfect combination of carbs, protein, and fat. Now, that’s berry, berry good!

IMG_1975In a mixer/blender, combine all of the following ingredients:

2 cups berries (blueberries or a variety of berries, fresh or thawed frozen)
1 cup plain oats
1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
1/2 cup nuts OR nut butter of choice
1 tablespoon flax
1 teaspoon honey

optional additions:
1 scoop high-quality protein powder for extra protein
1/4 cup goji berries
1 tablespoon hemp or chia seeds

Spray a large brownie pan and pour batter evenly into pan. Bake at 325-350 for about 15-20 minutes. Check with a fork, they’ll be soft, but won’t stick to fork. Let cool for at least 30 minutes and cut into individual bars. Serve cool or heated and enjoy any time of day.

Wellthily Infuses Wellness at Gurney’s

OHH AdYour wealth is your health. Right? That’s the premise of innovative company, Wellthily, infusing health and wellness everywhere they go. Providing on-site experiences, products, and programming, Welthilly is generating change, increasing engagement, and improving experiences at “the end” this summer. OHH is happy to support the wellth.

After a full renovation, Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa redefined good old Gurney’s Inn. If you haven’t been, you must go. Now. The spa, the view, the food…the wellness! Holy wellness. I experienced it for myself in the form of candlelit hip hop yoga. It’s a thing. And it’s awesome, thanks to Y7 Studio for kicking my wannabe-yogi down dog to Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Wayne. Best. Friday. Night. Class. Ever. And it’s only just begun.

Lauren MAccording to Wellthily (we concur) this is the summer of wellth and we’re happily wellcoming Wellthily to Montauk all summer long! While “the end” clearly takes the cakes (and by cake, we mean green juice) in beachy chic, share houses, and day parties, Wellthily delivers celebrity workouts, beach yoga, wellness chats, healthy cocktails, gourmet eats, and lots more…all while keeping things cool, calm, and collected just like Montauk we know and love.

lifeway square bannerBoth weekday and weekend classes will be offered to guests, locals and visitors. The resort aims to bring together the local community, weekenders, and hotel guests. Wellthily programming will target anyone looking to sweat, stretch, center and revitalize. Yup, I think that’s all of us. So check out the line-up and join One Healthy Hamptons and Lifeway Foods for a blowout yoga event benefiting Test400K, which empowers healthy and safe communities by ending violence against women and children. It’s going down July 11th from 9am-2pm. From yoga to healthy Lifeway Kefir Smoothies, live music, and an expert panel on wellness, mindfulness, fitness and holistic living, this is one not to be missed.

Furthering their commitment to wellness and health, Gurney’s guest rooms will include Wellthily healthy travel kits available for purchase this summer. Kits contain products to help guests feel pampered, sleep soundly, and snack healthily. Need a little well-motivation? All Gurney’s guests also receive 15% off any One Healthy Hamptons Nutrition package!

July Stars & Stripes Challenge!

Happy July! Here’s the deal, people: It’s independence month and we’re celebrating with stars and stripes…which means, we’re working our abs…A LOT. Summer’s in full force and we’re keeping that beach body toned (you’re welcome!) To begin, lie flat on your back and lift your legs to a 45 degree angle, keeping them as straight as possible. To perform a “star,” draw an imaginary star in the air with your toes with your back on the floor and legs together. For a stripe, move toes horizontally from one side to the other, and back (counts as two.) You’ll be doing stars some days, stripes other days, and both for double trouble. Just save, print, or pin the image below and let the celebrations begin!

Hope in the Hamptons

Come out and celebrate the life-saving mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® at the Inaugural St. Jude Hope in the Hamptons on July 11th! Hosted by FOX News National Security Expert, Columnist, and Commentator, KT McFarland, this chic red carpet event will feature gourmet, farm-fresh fare, cocktails, an exclusive auction, and a performance by Billy Joel’s Broadway tribute band, The Movin’ Out Band. It’s an event not to be missed with an unprecedented cause.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is leading the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer and other deadly diseases. Everything they do is centered around finding cures and saving children. The most amazing part about St. Jude is that families never receive a bill. They pay for treatment, travel, housing, and food – because St. Jude understands that the only thing that these families should worry about is helping their children live. Now that’s something to celebrate.

Hamptons ImageSt. Jude has the world’s best survival rates for the most aggressive childhood cancers. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to 80 percent and working to drive this number to 90 percent in the next decade. Meanwhile, St. Jude freely shares the breakthroughs it makes, and every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children.

In addition to celebrating this great cause and this amazing community, we’ll honor local Hamptons family of little Drew, currently receiving treatment at St. Jude for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Let’s rally for Drew, support St. Jude, and celebrate summer in the Hamptons! Click here or call (212) 239-3239 to purchase tickets for Hope in the Hamptons. One Healthy Hamptons is honored to support this cause and we’re looking forward to seeing you Saturday, July 11, 2015, 6-10:30pm at 1143 Deerfield Road, Water Mill.

Reflecting on Hamptons Wellness Week

The beauty of Hamptons Wellness Week is that there are no rules, little direction, and endless possibilities. When we first created Hamptons Wellness Week, the concept immediately grew beyond just free fitness classes. It’s about connecting, growing, and thriving. It’s about creating a balance between old and new, challenging and rejuvenating, and balancing goodness for the mind, body, and soul.

Vintage Balance ScaleIn reflecting on my own experiences during Hamptons Wellness Week, I only wish that I had had the time and energy to try EVERYTHING! Here are a few of my summer Wellness Week highlights:

I spent Sunday at the Southampton Farmer’s Market meeting and greeting (and eating fresh local goods!) and was lucky enough to catch a Pure Barre class right across the street. I walked in feeling great and walked out feeling extraordinary, flexible, and fit. Is the goal of Wellness Week to diet and detox all week? Heck, no! But a week full of wellness sure does make us more in-tune with how we fuel our bodies. The more energy-packed foods we eat, the more energy we have to move. Kicking the week off right set me up for better balance all around.

photo 2Monday morning came along and I was so excited to step out of my comfort zone and onto the beach for Jimmy Mindardi’s Beach Workout. After hearing about Jimmy for years, I couldn’t wait to get started…and then I couldn’t wait to get finished…! Holy heart-rate, Batman! It was a morning to remember, that’s for sure. If you’re looking for a full body challenge, cardio BLAST, raw outdoor workout, (and have some $ to spend) Jimmy’s your guy. Tell him “Killer” sent you.

photo(185)Just a beach, some cones, some flags, and about 10 of the most in-shape women I’ve ever met in my entire life. Needless to say that Tuesday I woke up sore as ever. But I had things to do and people to see, so I headed to Hampton Bays to MARVILfit and I’m glad I did. I pedaled through the pain with Marisella and her gang. If you’re going to try something new and you have a feeling you’ll be meeting some inspiring people, it’s worth the drive and the sore muscles, trust me. Get back on the bike…always get back on the bike!

And so I did. When I walked onto the treadmill at Barry’s Bootcamp on Wednesday morning, I wondered if my legs may just fall right off. They did not, thankfully…and as soon as class wrapped up, that post-Barry’s high was well worth every minute, incline, and lift..and later came some stretching, lots and lots of stretching.

10561595_1529730033922088_4665748599437855778_nBy Thursday, my body had just about had it, it was time I “take care of what I’ve got.” I decided to balance out the physical exhaustion with some much-needed spiritual goodness. The day started with yoga, ended with yoga, and included nothing but R&R in between. Thank goodness for Time to Breathe Zen in Southampton! I enjoyed a private yoga session with Kristina, who is not only one delightful yogi, but also incredibly skilled, graceful, welcoming, and clearly intuitive as this is how we wrapped up:

photo 5Pure bliss. After our yoga session, I moved right along to some reflexology and meditation. I sunk into the cozy chair and into my own little world. Utilizing the wide variety of guided meditations on the personal tablet during my reflexology treatment, I was definitely breathing nothing but zen. What’s better than personalized yoga, reflexology, and meditation? How about following it all up with a manicure and pedicure for 50% off?! Yes, please!

photo 2Thanks to Flying Point Nail Spa for putting the icing on cake of my afternoon of pampering! Just thinking about it makes me excited for the next Wellness Week! After all, where and when can you get utterly pampered and super fit all in the same week, at HUGE discounts?! Oh I love me some Hamptons Wellness Week!

Sporting newly primped nails and full of zen, I headed to Wolffer for some Sunset Salutations.

photo 3Along with many other Wellness Week warriors in the vines, we didn’t want to leave!

photo 4So we stayed. If that doesn’t say “job satisfaction,” I don’t know what does! Just an hour of Yoga in the Vines can turn anyone into a yogi, it’s really just that good. Talk about a day of R&R!

Friday morning started with a green smoothie and some Dance Cardio at Elements Fitness Studio. The weekend couldn’t have kicked off any better! This class is the perfect combination of cardio, core, strength, sculpt, and choreographed fun, head to toe! It just may be impossible to get bored of this fast-moving class and I can’t wait to head back for more!

photo 1Last but definitely not least, it was time to ditch the yoga pants and celebrate an amazing week at the Old Stove Pub for our “Wellness Wing-Ding” (smiling here with Kim of Hamptons Health Concierge and Emily of AKT in Motion, two fabulous HWW providers.)photo 5 With the sun shining, drinks flowing, live music playing, healthy apps passing, plates breaking, (opa!) and Hamptons Wellness Week rockstars all in one place, a good time was had by all. Greeks know how to throw a party that’s for sure!
