Healthy Holidays OHH Style

The magic of the holiday season surrounds us and we’re determined to make it through feeling healthy, happy, grounded, rested, well-fed, balanced, and ready for 2016!

IMG_3036Although it’s easy as pie to cut sleep, eat all the cookies, skip breakfast, have another cocktail, and end up completely burned out, tired, bloated, hungover, guilty, and miserable come January, let’s not!

hangoverOHH’s #HealthyHoliday Tips:

Keep it simple: yes, there will be parties and cocktails, gingerbread, latkes, toasts, roasts, cookie exchanges, peppermint bark, and a hundred reasons to indulge. And that’s ok. But all of those ‘extras’ sure do add up. To offset the indulgences, keep things simple at home. No need to make a three-course meal; instead, allow yourself permission to keep things light and basic. Make a “kitchen sink” salad, smoothie, or snack – just make sure you’re using whole foods. Keeping meals simple allows our body to maximize digestion and nutrient-absorption. Here’s a super simple salad made of arugula, sauerkraut, tomatoes, avocado, and hard-boiled eggs for your dose of greens, probiotics, healthy fat and protein all in one!

FullSizeRender3Eat your veggies: there’s no way around it – veggies are healthy and you must eat them. Don’t fret, you can easily increase your veggie intake in a yummy, easy way. Try making a meal that centers around vegetables instead of meat or pasta, like a meatless stir fry, hearty soup, or holiday smoothie. We don’t often give veggies the opportunity to be the main attraction, but doing so is a super simple, healthy, and affordable way to fuel our bodies. Secondly, try replacing your usual comfort foods with veggie-loaded options. Instead of your go-to mashed potatoes, try cauliflower mash. Forget the french fries and instead roast a new variation of squash, like acorn, delicata, spaghetti, butternut, kobucha, or pumpkin. When you’re urged to grab chips or crackers to snack on, eat crudite to satisfy that craving for a crunch.

Treat yo’self: we’ve said it before and we’ll say again – it’s all about balance. Let go of the labels and ditch the all-or-nothing attitude. Indulging in holiday treats is not only acceptable, it’s actually good for you! Consciously eating food that gives you immense pleasure can fulfill your heart, satisfy your cravings, and feed your soul. Whether it’s a family recipe that you look forward to every year or a new discovery on your journey, choose to indulge wisely and enjoy every single bite.

balancedNews flash: it’s not just about the treats. Or the veggies. Indulge in something that has absolutely nothing to do with food, like a bubble bath, scented candle, holiday movie, pedicure, song download, nature walk, novel, dance party, magazine, TV marathon, or anything that makes you feel pampered and rejuvenated. Just like we deserve to enjoy the cookie, we deserve a break, some self-care, and even a good nap!

Move and be still: we already established that most of us will be indulging a bit this season and that is A ok…as long as we remember to move (ie: exercise) and be still (ie: meditate/sleep/breathe.) Schedule your workouts (and your stillness) as you would meetings and don’t skip ’em. Get your turkey trot on, try a new class, rake leaves, shovel snow…whatever it takes to stay active and accountable. And mindful. Taking time to slow down, live in the moment, and embrace the holiday spirit is equally as important. Combine the moving and the stillness with a yoga class or non-workout workout. Sweat, enjoy, breathe, repeat.

One Healthy Breakdown: here’s to spreading health and holiday cheer this year!

Run the Summer: Summer Running Tips

Whew…it’s hot out there! Here are a few tips to keep cool and run on all summer long!

portrait of a mid adult woman jogging in a park

  1. Commit. Summer running is not easy, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it. Make a plan to run as often as you would like this summer and hold yourself accountable.
  2. Drink water. Lots of water. The most important factor in summer running is staying well-hydrated. Dehydration is dangerous and miserable. Dehydration while running is double bad. Prevent it by carrying a water bottle everywhere, don’t go an hour without sipping throughout the day.
  3. Run earlier in the morning before the sun has heated things up, temps are a lot cooler. Plus, early morning runs are often quiet and more serene before the rest of the world has awoken. If you’re not an early riser, wait until evening when the sun has dropped. Longer days means more daylight, just try to avoid the hottest hours of the day.
  4. Don’t forget the sunscreen. Sometimes it’s hard to remember the SPF if we aren’t hitting the beach or pool. The sun is just as strong when we’re moving outside, so lather up every morning you’ll be outdoors and find a good, breathable running hat for sunny days.
  5. Let your body adjust. At first, you may slow your pace and shorten your mileage. Running in high heat can be really difficult on the body. Ease into it and increase your pace and mileage so that you slowly adjust to the heat in the safest way.
  6. Dress accordingly. Running will heat the body almost instantly and body temperature only increases with every mile. Plan ahead and wear minimal clothing while remaining comfortable. Loose, light, and moisture-wicking is best.
  7. Run through sprinklers! Do whatever you can to keep yourself cool. Channeling your inner child and running through sprinklers or pouring water on your head is totally allowed…and extra fun.
  8. On that note, ENJOY it! If you don’t enjoy running in the first place, you really won’t enjoy running in high heat. Make yourself a kick-ass playlist, switch up your route, enjoy your surroundings, get a new running outfit, or do whatever you do that makes those miles enjoyable!

One Healthy Breakdown: run the summer, don’t let the summer run you when you can run the summer!

Gone Yogi

photo(177)Yoga is something we could all stand to do more often; the benefits are countless. Truth be told, I was not always a fan of yoga. I was one of those “yogis” who would look at the clock every two minutes wondering when it would end. Rarely did I ever make it thru shavasana. Bad yogi.

Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate yoga more and more…and a lot more. The sole benefit of stretching the body, aiding tight muscles, and countering high-impact workouts is reason enough to incorporate yoga into any routine.I learned to like yoga for the physical benefits, but I didn’t grasp the peace of mind part…yet.

When I moved to the Hamptons, I experienced that shift  My body, mind, and soul became open to the vast benefits of yoga, outside of just sore muscles. The physical stretching became the base level for further opening of the mind. We’re blessed to have so many amazing local yoga studios, a variety of classes, and gifted instructors. Maybe there’s something in the air here, but I finally learned to slow my breath, open my heart, and absorb yoga into my life. I not only sat thru shavasana, I learned to reap the benefits of sun salutations and meditation as well.

Just recently, I’ve actually gotten to the point of looking forward to going to yoga. Planning “yoga dates” with my girlfriends has become a regular occurrence. All of the sudden, my yoga mats have duplicated – one upstairs, one downstairs, one in my car…what’s happening?

I think I’m finally becoming a yogi. I’m no master, my flexibility is minimal and my balance is shaky, but I now place a high value on yoga in my day-to-day life…because I want to. Yoga is now a priority for my mind, body, and soul. And I highly recommend it to anyone who…I’ll stop there because I highly recommend yoga to anyone. I’ve learned that anyone can be a yogi and everyone should be, just unroll the mat and give it a try. Now. Seriously, move away from the computer and do a few sun salutations or just breathe deep in downward dog. You’ll thank me later.

One Healthy Breakdown: Rock on, yogis. You were right all along. Namaste.

Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right

Happy March! What a great month. We’re over the winter hump (better be) and counting down to the first day of spring. We’ll soon trade in our down jackets for spring coats and hot soups for cool smoothies. March also happens to be National Nutrition Month, a nationwide campaign initiated by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics to educate and celebrate eating right.

Woman Eating Fruit OutdoorsThis year’s theme is Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right. This could be my motto and I’ll tell you why. Yes, eating healthy is incredibly important, I practice and preach this daily. Food has superpowers, it can literally improve our health, energy, sleep, skin, hair, strength, mood, and so much more…all while preventing disease and feeling better, inside and out. Yes, nutrition is hugely important. But…

What’s the point of eating healthy if we don’t enjoy it? Life’s just too short. Not only do we eat to survive and fuel our bodies, but humans are programmed to eat largely for pleasure. Taste drives our food choices. We all crave certain foods, we all have our favorite restaurants, and we rotate our staple recipes. Pleasurable food is associated with celebration, memories, family, heritage, feelings, etc. We need food and we deserve to enjoy it. National Nutrition Month is all about combining taste and nutrition so that, as individuals and a nation, we’re eating better and enjoying it.

So, how do we do that? Through education, change, awareness, and balance. People ask me all of the time how do you always eat so healthy? I honestly don’t think twice about my lifestyle anymore, I actually crave fruits and vegetables. Seriously! I enjoy educating myself about nutrition, eating what I know is good for my body, stocking my kitchen with fresh, whole foods, cooking from scratch, listening to my body, feeding my cravings, experimenting in the kitchen, and even choosing broccoli over french fries and beans over burgers. Some people get it, others think I’m full of it.

I can understand why lots of people shake their heads because I didn’t always love eating healthy. Ten years ago, I probably wouldn’t have tried a green juice if you paid me. Now, I have one almost everyday and my body craves green juice. Why and how did this happen? Through education, change, awareness, and balance. With awareness of what we put in our mouth, how it makes us feel, and what food can do for our health, things will click. The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics advocates for education, change, awareness, and balance because these things can make our society drastically healthier.

So, let’s celebrate! National Nutrition Month isn’t about going on a month-long diet, it’s about finding pleasure in eating healthy. Step one is education. In order to know what ‘eating healthy’ means, looks likes, and tastes like, it takes learning, learning facts about nutrition and learning to question what we’re told by the FDA daily. Contact a nutritionist or self-educate through research. There are endless resources right at our fingertips, for free! Check out eatright.org and please come back to One Healthy Hamptons for tips, recipes, and making food FUN.

A little change here and there is a really big reason to celebrate. Learn what’s in the foods that you’re eating. Trust the signals that your body is giving you. Eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re full. Fuel your body and your mind with superfoods. Be aware of how you feel. Note what you ate when you feel energetic, happy, powerful, mobile, strong, and light. Note when you feel sluggish, deflated, unmotivated, depressed, jittery or unfulfilled. Try new things. Lessen salt and sugar. Use herbs, spices, and citrus for flavor. Trade processed foods for whole foods. There are a million changes you can make, start with one today and make March your month for healthier food choices. Your taste buds will adapt to crave healthier foods, you’ll feel fabulous heading into spring, and you’ll learn to celebrate the healthier you.

One Healthy Breakdown: Eat what you love. Love what you eat. Enjoy the Taste of Eating Right.

12 Days of Holiday Fun

How about actually enjoying this time we know as ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ spreading cheer instead of fear?! There’s nothing holding us back from keeping calm and embracing the season. Instead of just surviving the holidays, lets slow down, breathe, soak it in, count our blessings, have fun, be silly, make cookies, and spread CHEER this year! Here are 12 ways to keep calm and have a HAPPY holiday season!

12. Make a shopping list. Put some thought into your gifts and stay organized. Check off as you shop and don’t save it all for last minute! When you’re done shopping, reward yourself with a little something special for yourself. 11. Wear a big, chunky holiday sweater (it doesn’t have to be “ugly,” per se – beauty is in the eye of the beholder…) but it must be too big and super comfy! 10. Make hot chocolate and watch your favorite holiday movie and soak it up. My personal faves include Elf, Love Actually, The Family man, and The Holiday. 9. Did you get your Christmas tree yet?! Blast the tunes and decorate with friends/family! 8. Take a break from it all to focus on you. Get ALL bundled up and take a long winter walk or run. Leave your phone at home and soak up the silence. Enjoy a healthy peppermint smoothie while you’re at it! 7. Open a bottle of wine and throw yourself a gift-wrapping party. 6. Send a card to someone who won’t expect it and will be touched. 5. Make your favorite holiday cookies, from scratch, and share them. Or try a new recipe; TLC Cookies or World Peace Cookies, both of which are made with love. 4. Take a nap (the holidays are exhausting!) english bulldogs dressed up as santa and rudolph 3. Blast your favorite holiday tunes and have a dance party. 2. Family time. Enough said. 1. Have yourself a merry little holiday season. One Healthy Breakdown: we look forward to the holiday season all year. Don’t let the stress distract you from enjoying the most wonderful time of year.

Mindfulness During the Holidays

MP900440279

How often have you begun the holiday season with the most exalted expectations, only to stumble into the new year burned-out and disappointed? The secret to making your holidays as enjoyable and stress-free as possible is to take the mindfulness you practice on your yoga mat or meditation cushion and actually apply it in your life from moment to moment. And what better time than those frenzied, emotional weeks at the end of the year? Here are some suggestions:

Live in the moment.

As I’m sure you’ve noticed, most of your stress occurs when you’re worrying about the future or obsessing about the past. Live in the present; your mind naturally settles down and your anxiety dissipates. Easier said than done, of course, especially around the holidays, when your head is filled with back-to-back commitments and an endless list of things to do and buy. You can make a commitment to yourself to stop from time to time, shift your attention from your thinking, and pay mindful attention to your experience right now—the weight of your feet against the floor, your back against the chair, the coming and going of your breath.

Let go of expectations.

The holidays are fraught with promises that life and other people can’t possibly fulfill. Maybe you desperately want to take your family on vacation but discover you can’t afford it. Or you’re looking forward to a big family gathering but your folks get sick and have to cancel at the last-minute. Instead of attaching to the way you think things should be (and causing yourself unnecessary stress), you can choose to stay present and grounded, roll with the changes –and heed the other tips in this list.

Tread softly with the relatives.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em (or a little of both), family can be a major challenge to your peace of mind, especially when everyone’s stressed. Breathe deeply, and resist the temptation to rehash old hurts or expect more love and approval than they can muster (see above). Relish the tender moments, generosity, and togetherness that the holidays tend to evoke.

Be especially kind and gentle with yourself.

If you’re pushing yourself too hard, you need to be the one to notice, back off, and give yourself a little loving. Take a hot bath, do some yoga, get a massage, spend quiet time in nature, meditate, call a close friend. Do what nurtures you, then return to the fray refreshed, reinvigorated, and rebalanced.

Count your blessings.

Researchers agree that the key to a happy life is to appreciate what you have. Dwell on the positive and your mood quickly lifts. Spend five minutes each night, especially during the holiday season, reflecting on the good things that happened to you that day, even if they seem inconsequential. The sky at sunset, the loving look in a baby’s eyes, a gift from a friend, a tasty meal, a funny incident at work. Human minds tend to skew toward the negative to alert us to predators and other threats, so you need to make a special effort to correct the bias.

One Healthy Breakdown: Remember to be mindful, no matter how busy you get. In the end, you’re responsible for your own happiness and peace of mind. No one else can provide it for you, even at the holidays!

(Recipe slightly adapted from Oh She Glows)

*About Josie: I’m originally from Sag Harbor and I’m currently a student at Boston University working towards becoming a registered dietician and getting my Masters in Nutrition. I’ve been gluten-free for almost 2 years and vegan for a little over a year. My family is having a completely vegan, gluten-free Thanksgiving this year! I’ve been testing out new recipes to serve and this one was a real hit with my roommates (so hopefully it will be a hit with my family too!)

I’m Coming Home…#weddingvenueshopping

Whew! Touring wedding venues is EXHAUSTING! Super fun, special, and exhausting! Over the past week, my mom and I checked out seven wedding venues in The Hamptons and Boston (where I’m from.) It’s been an exciting few days for sure and I think I’m ready to return to my normal routine back in The Hamps.

photo 3I’ve quickly learned that wedding planning includes a hell of a lot of champagne and desserts. Not complaining! But, it’s a lot. Even without a wedding to plan, we all have weekends, celebrations, parties, meetings, traditions, and vacations. While it’s important to enjoy these events to the fullest and live a life of balance, not deprivation, it all adds up. The drinks, the clinks, the cals, the bubbly, the courses, the birthday cake, cake pops, pies, and so on.

photo 2

Who wouldn’t want to dig right into this?! You better believe I did. I tasted almost everything because it’s not everyday a girl is offered a sampler of fresh desserts involving carrot cake pops, chocolate covered strawberries, macaroons, and pumpkin whoopie pies…now is it? But, a taste is a taste and I do want to be able to fit into a wedding dress over the next few months! Yes, I had my cake and ate it too, but I also focused my enjoyment of this whole process on seeing the venues, enjoying the beautiful city of Boston, spending quality time with my mom and the rest of my family, and meeting new friends along the way!

photo 5I took advantage of this mini-vaca and enjoyed the time and these indulges. However, I did not sleep in and I did not forego my workouts. Balance is about enjoying what life has to offer, but not unraveling, or straying from goals. My goal is pretty loosely a body and mind that feels good, strong, and healthy, and a balanced, fun life. While my afternoons and evenings have been spent touring venues, getting drinks, lunch, or dinner with family, and, of course, the occasional frozen yogurt, my mornings have been spent running, spinning, at the gym, or on the yoga mat. And I love it that way. Work hard play hard, that’s really the message here.

Whether you’re in or out of your normal routine, do what you can and enjoy it. The weather is amazing this time of year, perfect for outdoor walks, runs, hikes, or bike rides. Choose something you love and do it. That way, exercise isn’t a chore but an activity. Something you know will pay off in the end, whether it’s to negate that cake pop, strengthen your muscles, stretch your body, refresh your mind, or all of the above, it’s always worth it if you ask me. Did I want to get up early yesterday morning to go to yoga? Not necessarily, but once I hit the mat, after a few downward dogs, I couldn’t have been happier that I did. That yoga class was exactly what I needed after lots of spinning. And, I enjoyed that yoga-zen for hours afterwards, an added bonus. Strive for balance, not perfection. It’s possible to enjoy every celebration, big and small, while living a healthy life. A healthy life is a longer life! More moments to enjoy!

One Healthy Breakdown: When all else fails, take the stairs!
