Heating Up in Style at Gloria Jewel

This was a looooooong winter. No one is happier to see signs of spring than me. Until now, the only time I defrosted and felt warm and sunny was during a recent shopping trip to Gloria Jewel in Bridgehampton. Despite the fact that the weather outside was all kinds of chilly, I’m convinced that it’s always sunny inside Gloria Jewel.

I was on a mission – in need of a few spring staples with serious staying power to transform my wardrobe. Maybe even something I could wear right through summer…even fall… Luckily, that’s what Gloria Jewel is all about: functional, fashionable staples. Trendy, yet comfortable and classic essentials that can transform an ordinary day into a confident, kick-ass day. Sounds good, right? So, I blocked out a couple of hours and (lucky me!) headed out for a shopping spree.

photo 2I arrived at Gloria Jewel on a quiet morning to get some one-on-one time with the fabulous Megan Chiarello, owner and founder of Gloria Jewel. First, I got the grand tour of the Bridgehampton store, (located at 125 Main Street) current inventory, brands, designers, materials, and trends. My first thought: The. Colors. Are. Perfection.

photo(154)

Megan started Gloria Jewel in 2007, modeling the concept after her two grandmothers, both of whom impacted her deep love and appreciation for fashion. Unlike most high-end fashion boutiques in New York and elsewhere, Gloria Jewel is built on unconditional love, acceptance, and the desire to empower women through fashion. It’s crystal clear that Megan’s welcoming personality set a precedent throughout the company from day one.

Megan’s passion got me super stoked to shop and her attitude about clothing is right up my alley. “I’m into wearing your clothes,” Megan explains. She aims to make that moment when a women opens her closet every morning positive, fun, and comforting. Gloria Jewel is not about one-time wonders. And that’s good, because neither are cost-efficient shoppers. What’s the point of investing in an item of clothing only to wear it once, get sick of it fast, see it everywhere, or notice a decline in quality after one wash? Gloria Jewel takes care of it all. And not just boutique fashion, but also community events, charities, and year-round goings on. I’m on board with that (in my new peach long-sleeve by Wilt.)

photo 3From mood to merchandise, Gloria Jewel makes shopping FUN. No pressure to buy, no fake feedback we all know and hate. Although I loved most of what I saw and tried on, there were definitely items that just weren’t for me, and Megan was totally honest, which was so incredibly refreshing. Gloria Jewel’s staff understands that shoppers are all different. Some crave personal attention, others do NOT, but every woman deserves to walk out with at least one item of clothing that she will ROCK.

photo 4And you better believe that that’s what I did. Again and again…and again.

picstitch(19)Cotton fringe? Yes, please. Navy T-shirt dress? Must have. Yup, you’ll see me sporting these two bad boys a lot this spring. Oh, the power of staples.

So, what else sets Gloria Jewel apart from other Hamptons/NYC boutiques? The company is built on the goal of helping each and every woman (regardless of age, size, background) to feel great in her clothing. As miss One Healthy Hamptons, I can attest to the fact that all of this healthy eating and working out just isn’t worth the while unless we feel good about ourselves in our own skin. Fashion is an expression of who we are; clothing can either lift us up, making us feel comfortable and confident, or weigh us down.

While Gloria Jewel excels in high-fashion, chic, trend-setting looks, comfort is the underlying objective. If you’re comfortable, you’re confident. Megan aims to provide women with comfortable fashion that will show confidence morning through night. “I want our customers to feel good, whether they’re meeting colleagues for coffee, picking up the kids at school, or heading out for date night.” Ah, life in the Hamptons. Everywhere we look, folks are dressed to the nines…why not us, right?!

GloriaJewel-Logo-Slide2-16971_960x480Gloria Jewel shoppers are shoppers for life (trust me, I’m one of them.) The successful boutique has expanded to Westhampton Beach, Bridgehampton, Amagansett, and TriBeCa. “We want you to get compliments. We want you to get the most flattering look for YOU, we want you to find that great-fitting pair of jeans, it’s hands-down the best investment a woman can make,” Megan explains and I concur. The power of a good pair of jeans, a perfect white T, or a bombshell top for your next night out is irreplaceable. So, get ready to shop with ease, comfort, and uncompromised style.

One Healthy Breakdown: Check out your local Gloria Jewel…like pronto. Your perfect outfit and fitting confidence awaits…bring it on, summer!

One Healthy Photographer

One Healthy Photographer, Kate Petrone, is a Hamptons local with an eye for art, both in and out of the kitchen. Her love for photography and for life grow with each day she embraces. Enjoy learning more about Kate and tune in to her words of wisdom on doing what you love and treating yourself, and others, right.

1236007_651380117532_495407727_n

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did ‘life as you know it’ come to be? How did you get into photography and what do you like best about it?

I feel very lucky and blessed to have had the opportunity to grow up out here. I was originally born in Rockville Centre, but my family moved out here because of all the wonderful things they heard about the school system. I began kindergarten in Amagansett Elementary School, and then went to East Hampton for middle school and my freshman year of high school. Growing up, my mom always had a camera in her hand, whether she was taking pictures and videos of me or photographing the beautiful scenery out here. However, it wasn’t until I transferred to The Ross School my sophomore year of high school that I really discovered my love for photography.

It started with an intro darkroom class and I completely fell in love with it. I learned how to develop my own film, print my own photos, and I even mixed my own chemicals. The satisfaction I got from looking at a print I made entirely on my own was addictive. I got to travel to Australia with my photography class during my junior year of high school, where we spent three weeks taking pictures and exploring. During my senior year, I started my senior thesis project, which, as a final product, ended up being a show of over 50 prints ranging in size from 11×14 to 16×20.

Once I graduated, I went to The School of Visual Arts in NYC where I earned a BFA in photography. I remember my first day of class, everyone brought in his or her portfolio, and the guy sitting next to me asked to see mine. Once he saw they were all black and white, hand-printed photos, he casually said, “oh, I’ve never been in a darkroom before.” It blew my mind how someone in school for photography had never been in the darkroom to learn the fundamentals of the art. It was then that I decided to be different, to choose a traditional form of photography over digital photography. Instead of using the computer to make a photograph into art, I wanted to explore other methods and I ultimately chose Wet Plate Collodion Photography, which originated in the 1850’s and was actually the second form of photography ever invented. You’ll see some of my work here.

I photograph on black tin and clear glass, creating both negative (ambrotypes) and positive (tintype) images. My 8×10 camera is made out of cherry wood and I have a French Darlot brass portrait lens made in 1871. It produces beautiful, timeless photographs that have an eerie, dreamy quality to them as well.

2. Is there any overlap in your love for photography and your value for health, and wellness? Do you ever combine the two? In what ways?

That’s a great question! I think my value for health and wellness rolls into every aspect of my life, whether it’s my relationship with my family and my boyfriend, my job, my love for photography, even the way I interact with other people. There’s something to be said about the method of photography I have chosen to practice. It’s completely organic and a really stripped-down way to produce art. I love photographing my friends and family, and making still lifes out of every day objects that are a part of my life. As an example, a friend of mine passed away a few years ago, and every year since then a group of us go down to the beach with white roses and throw them in the water for her. Well one year, I was walking along the beach about a week later, and I saw one of the roses. It was weathered from the salt water but was still insanely beautiful. I took it home that day and made a portrait of it.

Cassidys roseI also use Instagram to post photos of new, healthy recipes or fitness goals I make. I use the photo app to check-in to a fitness community I’m a part of called Tone It Up. This allows everyone in the community to connect from all over the world. When I’ve made a masterpiece in the kitchen, I love taking photos and uploading them to share over social media, I love trying new things and getting feedback from others. Social media check-ins are a really great way to stay motivated and it’s fun to incorporate photography in to this practice.

3. What is your favorite workout? Favorite weekend activity?

I’ve been getting into spinning recently, which I love because it’s fast-paced and really challenging, but fun at the same time. I found that spin class motivates me to push myself to levels I didn’t know I could reach.

I’ve always loved yoga too. I practice Ashtanga, which is all about challenging yourself and focusing on your breath. No matter how much you’re sweating or what posture you’re in, if you’re not breathing correctly, you’re not practicing correctly. There’s always room for improvement. One of the things I have always loved about yoga is that there’s no competition. It’s all about bettering yourself and focusing on no one but yourself.

On the weekends, I love to relax, go wine tasting, spend time with loved ones and get some fresh air! Another thing I do is meal prep for the week ahead, it’s such a good way to plan healthy meals. I love having people over on Sunday to watch the game, and I’ll make a big pot of chili or throw together something in the crock pot and know I’ll be able to eat all week.

4. As a young woman, photographer, girlfriend, member of the community, etc. how do you maintain balance in your life?

I’m very lucky to have such a wonderful family and a loving boyfriend who have supported me with any decision I have made. Whenever I have any doubts I think back to the question, “if money wasn’t an issue and you could do whatever you wanted, what would it be?” It’s really important to do what you love. I hate seeing people stuck at a job they’re miserable at or getting up for a day they know they’re going to hate. Why torture yourself? I once left a job where I was being treated poorly, I just up and left. It felt so great to stand up for myself, and I’m really happy with where I am today. Do what you love, and the rest will fall into place.

5. Any great healthy/balance tips for other young woman?

When in doubt, keep it lean clean & green! As often as possible, I try to eat natural, in season vegetables and fruits. I really feel a difference when I’m feeding my body the nutrients it needs to thrive. My biggest advice, though, is don’t beat yourself up. If you have an off day or even an off week, just get back on track. It’s not about failing, but how we bounce back that really counts. Far too often I see women putting themselves or others down. Girls can be really judgmental on themselves and others. I’ve gotten bullied before, and it’s really sad because it shows that these people are so unhappy with their own life that they feel the need to bring others down with them. Remember, nobody ever got ahead by putting someone else down, and if someone is trying to bring you down, they’re already beneath you.

6. What food items do you always keep in your house?

I’m a nut butter fanatic. At all times, without fail, I have at least eight different jars of peanut butter, sunflower seed butter, almond butter, etc. I’ll eat it with anything- on an apple, in a wrap, on a banana, on a celery stick, and in a stir-fry. I even make little energy bites or bars by combining honey and peanut butter on the stove till it’s thin, then add oats, any kind of dried fruit, slivered almonds, shredded coconut, and roll them into little bite sized balls or cut them into bars. They’re delicious- and I love knowing I can grab one and run out the door if I need to!

7. What is your favorite indulgence?

It’s all about the simple things! I love relaxing with a nice glass of red wine, a good movie, my kittens and my boyfriend. To tell you the truth, I’m kind of a crazy cat lady!

8. How do you make health a priority in your home?

As often as possible, I look up recipes and meal prep for the week. I try to look for recipes that include a lot of the same ingredients, or Crock Pot recipes that are simple and delicious. Crock Pots are great because they don’t require a lot of prep time or even ingredients, and you literally throw whatever you want in there, go about your day and a few hours later, you have a healthy, hot, home-cooked meal ready to eat! My boyfriend is also a really good sport about trying new things. I even got him to like brussels sprouts!

9. What is your FAVORITE thing about living in the Hamptons?

The seasons! Fall is so beautiful out here. I’m a summer girl, but I love when the crowds leave and we have our town and beaches back! I love how crisp and cool the air is and how vibrant the leaves are. I’m also very lucky to have grown up a few miles from the ocean. I don’t think I could ever not live near a body of water. I grew up surfing in Montauk and riding my bike to the ocean after work just to dig my toes into the sand. I love the water so much that I became a lifeguard for about 7 years. The ocean is so therapeutic. Salt water cures everything!

One Healthy Mom

Enjoy this refreshingly honest and inspirational interview with local family life teacher, parenting coach, and amazing mother of five, Anastasia Gavalas!

meee1. Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I am a mom, family life teacher, author of WING IT: 6 Simple Steps to Succeed as a Modern Day Parent, and founder of the WING IT PROJECT. I live in Bridgehampton with my husband and five children (ages 15, 13, 11, 9, & 7.) Helping parents make life with children easier is such gratifying work and making a difference in the world through the WING IT PROJECT is something I’ve always dreamed of doing. I live my life in a wholehearted way where I am happy with myself and confident with the choices I make.

2. How did ‘life as you know it’ come to be?

After I had my 2nd child I felt exhausted and couldn’t get out of bed. I was quickly diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, an autoimmune disease, that had been manifesting in my body for years. I took the prescribed medicine and it just didn’t help much. I kept plugging along but felt overwhelmed and emotionally drained. In 2003, we decided to move to the Hamptons and found out we were expecting baby #4… surprise! With all that was going on, on top of not having family or friends around for support, I quickly learned that I needed to change. I began searching for alternative methods that would support what I knew in my heart was best. I tried acupuncture, homeopathic remedies, and a new overall wellness approach for my health and for my family. It was out of necessity that I found a more organic way of living life. This included making my well-being a priority as well as teaching my children to be more independent.

3. What’s something you overcame and how?

My need to do everything perfectly and my fear-based reactions. Once I was able to recognize that the display of the “perfect” children or my role as the “perfect” mother was wearing me out and preventing me from living authentically, I let those ideas go. Perfection is based on other people’s judgements. I made a decision to separate myself from the concept of perfection to be happy. I practiced meditation starting ten minutes a day, carved out me-time every single day, and (just like I explain in the chapter, “Build Your Village” in WING IT) I began to surround myself with more supportive people who encourage my growth.

4. What is your favorite workout? Favorite family activity?

Dancing is one of my favorite things to do and I mix it with a brisk walk a few times a week. I get bored easily with exercising so I need to change my workout routine up all the time. As far as a family we like to swim (although 2 out of 5 kids hate the beach – not sure how that happened?!?) take bike rides, and go skiing. I have high-energy kids who are constantly moving and ready for adventure at all times so, we’re always moving & grooving.

5. As a career woman, mother, and wife, and how do you maintain balance in your life?

First, I redefined the concept of balance. Standing upright at all times isn’t realistic or worth the effort. But, remaining focused on a goal with a trusting, more joyful attitude will help balance appear in the most challenging of roles. I believe balance is about remaining flexible and knowing that, just as the mightiest of trees will bend and sway with the winds of world, so will mothers who strive for balance. At the end of the day, people just have to appreciate the flexibility and positions experienced.

5. Any great healthy tips for busy moms?

Yes, take time for yourself: get enough sleep, eat good food, sit down and take time to meditate so you can be the woman you were meant to be and the best mom for your children.

6. What food items do you always keep in the house?

Fresh vegetables and fruits – organic as much as possible, olive oil, different cheeses, good meats, gluten-free foods, and always a bottle of chilled champagne for those special occasions…because moms are people too!

7. What is your favorite indulgence?

Drinking tea in the morning, sleeping in (that’s happened maybe three times in the past 10 years… but, a girl can dream!) and long hot showers (alone.)

8. How do you make health a priority in your family without going overboard?

Practicing being healthy is a lifestyle choice. We spend a lot of time outdoors. I talk to my kids about nutritional balance. Four of my children are responsible for cooking one night per week. So, every night, we have a really good, balanced, colorful meal. Children learn by what they observe and I try to demonstrate a healthy lifestyle with the choices I make instead of badgering them with health talks.

9. What is your FAVORITE thing about living in the Hamptons?

The ease of living out here. There is an organic way to life. I love the diversity of people and the experiences it provides. It is a really special place to live with the most amazingly kind people. It’s a great place to raise children because you can be as tuned-in to what’s happening or tuned-out of the busyness of life as much as you want to be.

One Healthy Pilates Instructor

Enjoy this interview with Erika Bloom of Erika Bloom Pilates Plus for tips on balancing a business, (Erika’s Pilates studios in and around NYC & the Hamptons) family, and a healthy life!White Collar – Season 41. How did you get into Pilates?

I began Pilates when I was a professional dancer. It was recommended by my doctors to help with dance-related injury. I immediately fell in love with it and got amazing results, both as a dancer and after I stopped performing. I continually find that Pilates is the answer as I go through different phases in my life: to keep my dancer’s body once I stopped dancing, to counter my scoliosis as I age, to prepare for and recover from having children. Year after year, I love it more and more.

2. What do you find is the best benefit of Pilates? Tell us some other benefits too!

Pilates is the most effective way to perfect posture. This is so important because we all look thinner, younger, and more beautiful with good posture; and good alignment makes the body feel better and keeps it injury free. Pilates is also so amazing because it creates both strength and flexibility. It works the muscles in a way that sculpts the body to be long and lean.

3. What is your favorite non-Pilates workout/activity?

I practice yoga, particularly the Pranayama and meditation portion, and I love how it complements Pilates. I also love swimming in the ocean with my kids, playing paddle ball on the beach, stand-up paddle boarding in Gardiner’s Bay by our house, and taking long bike rides through the Hamptons.

4. As a mother, business owner, wife, and Pilates instructor, how do you maintain balance in your life?

It’s hard! It’s important to learn to say ‘no’ to work demands. It’s also challenging but really imperative to be ‘off’ work when I’m not at work so that I can focus on my kids when I’m with them and not have my head in two places at once. I have to remind myself that the world isn’t going to end if I wait until I’m back in the office to get back to someone. I’m also very lucky that I have such an amazing team around me both at home and in the office and that the type of work I do makes it easy to take care of myself. A day at the office includes a Pilates session, massage, or acupuncture treatment!

5. Any great healthy tips for on-the-go’ers?

The best thing we can do for ourselves is to breathe! When you’re stressed, rushed, tired, hungry, out of balance, take some time to focus on slow, deep breaths. Calming your nervous system in this way, helping to bring it from sympathetic to parasympathetic, improves immunity, digestion, lowers blood pressure and stress hormones, and more. It’s so simple, but so amazingly effective.

6. What food items do you always keep in the house?

I always keep tons of fruit in the house. It’s an easy, healthy snack that also squashes sugar cravings. I love apples, blueberries, plums, and pears the most.

MP900387864I also always have organic turkey and Ezekiel bread for a quick, protein-rich lunch for the kids. Brown rice, quinoa, fresh veggies, miso soup, hard boiled eggs, Greek yogurt, and almond butter are always on hand as well.

7. What is your favorite indulgence? (can be edible or not!)

Getting regular blow outs for my hair is my indulgence. I don’t like the effort and time waste of doing my own hair. I love how it looks blown out and I love getting scalp massages, reading salon magazines, and multi-tasking by catching up on emails during the blow out. It feels like taking time out to get pampered every week!

8. How do you make health a priority in your family without going overboard?

I don’t think eating healthy and getting exercise has to be about restriction. Healthy food is delicious and physical activity is fun! We make it a part of every day with the spirit of enjoyment and I’m proud to be setting this kind of foundation for my kids’ healthy futures.

One Healthy Breakdown: Lots of exercise, produce, living in the moment with family, and weekly blow outs? Erika’s balanced lifestyle is one we can all strive for. Start with a deep breath now!

Not Your Average TRX Class, Not Your Average Trainer

I finally got to take Linda Silich’s TRX class at Studio 89 (Claypit Road, Sag Harbor.) This is not your average TRX class, because Linda is not your average trainer. The class is a lot like Linda: a whole lot of goodness packed into one. From kickboxing to dancing, sprinting, and of course tons of TRX strength-training, Linda’s regulars know that anything and everything is fair game.

IMG_1413We warmed up with some cardio and then stretched using the TRX bands. TRX allows for a unique workout, conventional strength-training in an unconventional way. We went through the standard strength-training moves to target different muscle groups; biceps, triceps, squats, etc. The difference with TRX is that you’re really creating more resistance by loading the bands with your own body weight.

Linda pushed us through three levels of intensity for each move, so that we could challenge ourselves and modify accordingly. I’ve noticed with TRX, it doesn’t feel like it gets progressively harder, it’s almost more of an instant discomfort that tells you you’re doing it right. Seems backwards, but it’s effective, that’s for sure. When we pushed into the tougher modifications, my glutes or triceps instantly felt the work. And then we pushed and pushed. And pushed. Linda does the moves right alongside you, keeping an upbeat demeanor and a smile throughout the class that made me want to stay at her level.

You’ll never be bored training with Linda. She brings enough energy for the whole class to feed off of. She’s friendly, upbeat, fast-paced, and funny. Yes, you’ll laugh, but her class is no joke. Did I mention that this particular TRX class included kickboxing, running, and sprinting? Seriously, at one point, we ran on the outdoor track behind Studio 89 and sprinted the last side of the track. Told you this class is non-conventional! I asked Linda how she runs through class with such a variety of ‘tricks’ up her sleeve. Depending on the class and the music, she’ll just feel something and go with it. Sometimes, she’s very musically driven and lets the beat govern the movement, other times, she’ll feed off of the class’ energy and modifications. She clearly has been doing this long enough that it’s second nature.

The music is always catchy, Linda’s vast taste is a pretty perfect compliment to her teaching style – anything goes if it gets the body moving. Linda’s the only trainer that will get Paddle Diva, Gina, off her SUP board…and that, my friends, is no easy task!

Ayayay, the last TRX segment was extreme. I have a feeling this is what the inventors of TRX were envisioning: sheer agony. We ended the class on the mat, feet suspended by TRX bands, doing plank exercises and push-ups. Ok, this is when I finally broke an intense sweat and actually wanted to shed a tear. I felt pretty capable throughout class until this last point, when my core and shoulders began to scream. Best way to whittle your middle? Get those TRX bands around your ankles, get down in plank and just hang out. Dare I say that this one exercise alone may make ‘typical’ planks and push-ups seem…easy? Cringe. Thankfully, the song ended and we moved on to stretching. I survived another one, phew.

On a personal note, Linda goes above and beyond in all walks of life. From running a business, (Groundworks Landscaping) to being a fabulous mom, teaching fitness classes, and being super involved in the community, Linda deserves a shout-out for being a huge inspiration!

One Healthy Breakdown: Linda is truly one-of-a-kind. Take a class with her and you’ll be instantly hooked on Linda and TRX!
