One Healthy Breakdown: staying well in the Hamptons, all summer long!

Bootcamping with Trainer Vanacker

People are always asking: what are the best summer workouts in the Hamptons? There’s no question that Sander Vanacker’s Bootcamp in the Vines at Wolffer Estate Vineyard is one of the best kept secrets. If you’re new to Trainer Vanacker’s workouts, it’ll take you all of four minutes to realize that you’re going to get a high-intensity full-body workout with some friendly competition, laughs, and a serious burst of endorphins…in that absolutely irreplaceable setting we all know and love.

image010If you’re in the Hamptons, you should know Sander. Maybe it’s his out-of-the box approach, depth of knowledge about fitness, sense of humor, or all of the above, that sets him apart from the rest. For Sander, it’s not about a trendy reputation or a luxurious experience. It’s about efficiency, getting outside of your comfort zone, and doing your personal best, even if that means grass stains, groans, and lots of sweat. Sander lives and breathes fitness and it’s contagious during his classes.

“I see fitness as a tool to improve someone’s mood, health, performance and quality of life. It’s not just about the workout itself, but also about the experience and how it fits into your lifestyle. If you learn to love the activity, then you will look forward to doing….and you’ll do it more. That’s how I approach fitness. I want clients to enjoy it while getting a good workout. There’s no reason that challenging exercise can’t be fun,” Sander says.

IMG_2007The class is broken up into drills that incorporate high-intensity cardio intervals, strength training, partner exercises, games, and more…starting right away with the warm-up. That’s another thing about Sander, he won’t waste your time…or his. Every single exercise has a purpose and he won’t ask anyone to do anything that he wouldn’t do himself. You bet Sander sure does sweat right along with the rest of the class, partner for the drills, participate in the games, and get his sweat on.

As a former physical education teacher, Sander embraces the benefit of fun and games. Instead of “sprints,” we play tag. Instead of “intervals,” we use a deck of cards. Instead of equipment, we use the body. Instead of holding a plank, we play a game to make the time pass. Sander makes even the worst exercises (burpees, I’m talking ‘bout you) seem fun somewhat fun. He adds just enough distraction to make it doable…and addicting. The beautiful surrounding vines don’t hurt either.

IMG_3940Sander affirms that he “implements partner drills, games, and mental activities into the workout to keep the mind preoccupied and make the time move faster. It’s about creativity and flexibility in the moment, knowing when to change the plan to suit the needs of the class. I also attempt to show people new exercises or new ways to do the same things to prevent boredom. Possibilities are endless; in addition to new exercises to incorporate into their own fitness routine, I also aim to teach people the why behind it. Don’t just do it because I said so, do it because it’s effective.”

Want to learn something new, get a kick-ass workout, and have a little fun? Try Sander’s weekly Bootcamp, 8:30am every Saturday morning at the Wolffer winery. Click here for the full Yoga in the Vines schedule and we’ll surely see you there! In the meantime, click here for more about Trainer Vanacker, who also offers cycling coaching, personal training in the Hamptons, and online training programs for people all over the world. Guess the secret’s out…

One Healthy Breakdown: you won’t regret a Vanacker workout, that’s for sure!

Wine & Wellness

“Wine is constant proof that God loves us and wants to see us happy.” ~ Benjamin Franklin

red wine, sunny afternoonLet’s talk WINE. Some of the oldest documents, dating back to 2200 BC, mention wine as a man-made medicine. Wine has been promoted, since Hippocrates’ days, as a part of a healthy diet (yay!) Some of the benefits of moderate wine drinking (everything in moderation!) include:

  • Reducing the risk of depression
  • Anti-aging
  • Preventing certain cancers, like breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancer
  • Raising levels of omega-3 fatty acids
  • Preventing dementia
  • Reducing the risk of Type 2 Diabetes
  • Lowering risk of heart disease
  • Promoting strong bone density/lessening Osteoporosis
  • Lowering risk of stroke
  • Boosting good cholesterol and lowering bad cholesterol
  • Cutting the risk of cataracts
  • Increasing lifespan
  • Boosting mental health

Yoga in the Vines is Absolutely Divine

What’s better than getting into your first downward dog and feeling instantly better from the inside out? The mind and body connect, time starts to slow, and the focus shifts to the simplicity of the breath. That to-do list takes a back seat, negative thoughts seep away, and the chaos of the outside world dissipates. The body lightens, the heart opens, and gratitude takes over. When I experience this feeling at the beginning of my yoga practice, I know that I’m right where I need to be.

I’ll tell you what’s better than hitting the mat for yoga practice: having that very experience in the middle of a vineyard underneath the warm summer sun. Yoga in the Vines at the Wolffer Estate Vineyard commenced this past May and lucky for us, it’s a huge gift to our community. In a time and place where people are always trying to get from one Hamptons hot spot to the next, (of which Wolffer is one of those spots, of course) Yoga in the Vines offers a sanctuary, an escape from it all…in the middle of it all. The miles of greenery and scenery take yoga to a whole new level.

IMG_4767Yoga in the Vines allows us to experience all of the above mentioned goodness and gratitude in the middle of one of Mother Nature’s finest creations. Outside of the typical yoga studio, there’s no clock to watch and no ceiling to reach for. Just kick off your shoes, lay your mat on the grass, and you’re good to go. The yoga itself is no joke either, so be ready for that yoga stretch we all know and love.

I asked Erica (who works in Wolffer’s event department and recently got her yoga teacher certification in order to enact Yoga in the Vines) what made it happen? Her answer: “a dream & determination. My passion for the outdoors, yoga, and our community inspired me to start this new Yoga in the Vines program. It has been a dream to grow all three passions together and share this experience with our community in such a beautiful vineyard. I am so thankful to work at Wölffer Estate Vineyard and to have the support and encouragement from the Wölffer Team behind this program. Each class, teacher and student brings new and exciting energy to the winery and I look forward to the program’s future.”

10264297_673312989385258_5905117691776560397_nAmen to that, Erica! As we share these values for community, yoga, and the great outdoors, One Healthy Hamptons is thrilled to support and partake in this new venture in the vines! These classes really do bring about a one-of-a-kind energy. There’s just nothing else in the world like a sun salutation under the sunset, warrior pose among the dynamic wildlife, or a down dog with the view of endless vines amongst the blue sky. Even on cloudy or rainy days, class takes place under cover next to the pond and the Wolffer Estate backyard, equally as much of an oasis when the sun is hiding.

Each instructor brings with them their own twist and style. Although the setting itself brings enough pleasure, the yoga teachers happen to be nothing less than fantastic. Wolffer has hand-picked a group of instructors who all share an immense talent and appreciation for bringing the community together in the great outdoors. From Flow to Sunset Salutations, the mood is casual and the goal is sheer enjoyment. Class is outside, with just our yoga mats, the green grass, and each other. Being playful as we practice, allowing room for laughter, smiles, and outspoken gratitude are all not only accepted, but encouraged.

As if we weren’t spoiled enough with the wide variety of wonderful yoga studios around the Hamptons, Wolffer has upped the anti with Yoga in the Vines. Try a class for yourself during Hamptons Wellness Week this July!

One Healthy Breakdown:  If you think “Summer in a Bottle” is Wolffer’s highlight of the summer, you’ve got to try Yoga in the Vines!

I’m Coming Home…#weddingvenueshopping

Whew! Touring wedding venues is EXHAUSTING! Super fun, special, and exhausting! Over the past week, my mom and I checked out seven wedding venues in The Hamptons and Boston (where I’m from.) It’s been an exciting few days for sure and I think I’m ready to return to my normal routine back in The Hamps.

photo 3I’ve quickly learned that wedding planning includes a hell of a lot of champagne and desserts. Not complaining! But, it’s a lot. Even without a wedding to plan, we all have weekends, celebrations, parties, meetings, traditions, and vacations. While it’s important to enjoy these events to the fullest and live a life of balance, not deprivation, it all adds up. The drinks, the clinks, the cals, the bubbly, the courses, the birthday cake, cake pops, pies, and so on.

photo 2

Who wouldn’t want to dig right into this?! You better believe I did. I tasted almost everything because it’s not everyday a girl is offered a sampler of fresh desserts involving carrot cake pops, chocolate covered strawberries, macaroons, and pumpkin whoopie pies…now is it? But, a taste is a taste and I do want to be able to fit into a wedding dress over the next few months! Yes, I had my cake and ate it too, but I also focused my enjoyment of this whole process on seeing the venues, enjoying the beautiful city of Boston, spending quality time with my mom and the rest of my family, and meeting new friends along the way!

photo 5I took advantage of this mini-vaca and enjoyed the time and these indulges. However, I did not sleep in and I did not forego my workouts. Balance is about enjoying what life has to offer, but not unraveling, or straying from goals. My goal is pretty loosely a body and mind that feels good, strong, and healthy, and a balanced, fun life. While my afternoons and evenings have been spent touring venues, getting drinks, lunch, or dinner with family, and, of course, the occasional frozen yogurt, my mornings have been spent running, spinning, at the gym, or on the yoga mat. And I love it that way. Work hard play hard, that’s really the message here.

Whether you’re in or out of your normal routine, do what you can and enjoy it. The weather is amazing this time of year, perfect for outdoor walks, runs, hikes, or bike rides. Choose something you love and do it. That way, exercise isn’t a chore but an activity. Something you know will pay off in the end, whether it’s to negate that cake pop, strengthen your muscles, stretch your body, refresh your mind, or all of the above, it’s always worth it if you ask me. Did I want to get up early yesterday morning to go to yoga? Not necessarily, but once I hit the mat, after a few downward dogs, I couldn’t have been happier that I did. That yoga class was exactly what I needed after lots of spinning. And, I enjoyed that yoga-zen for hours afterwards, an added bonus. Strive for balance, not perfection. It’s possible to enjoy every celebration, big and small, while living a healthy life. A healthy life is a longer life! More moments to enjoy!

One Healthy Breakdown: When all else fails, take the stairs!
