Bounce Back to Balance

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: life’s about balance. That means indulgence, moderation, and wiggle room. For some of us, fun-filled weekends may mean a little too much indulging and not enough moderation. Instead of that all-or-nothing, detox-to-retox-plan, get back on track in a balanced way with these simple ‘bounce back’ strategies (juice cleanse not included):

Bounce-Rate1. Get over it. Don’t beat yourself up. You can’t change the past. So, move on and look forward.

2. Drink UP. Alcohol, salty foods, and the hot sun will cause some serious dehydration. Make it a point to drink water around the clock, carry a water bottle with you everywhere, and spice it up. Rise and shine with lemon water or start your day with a detox drink and just keep sippin’.

3. Eat a lot, too. Stick to whole foods – lots of leafy greens and veggies, fresh fruit, lean protein, and portioned healthy fats. Raw fruits and veggies reset the digestive system and provide the body with tons of nutrients and energy to keep you going. Season foods with herbs and spices; ginger, turmeric, cayenne pepper, dill, cinnamon, and cumin naturally detox with flavor.

4. Move. Exercise will make you feel renewed from the inside out. Not only will you torch calories and burn off those indulgences, sweating also flushes toxins. Hit up a class, head out for a run, or do an at-home workout to get the heart pumping.

5. Rest. Get some R&R to rejuvenate the mind and body. Remember, ya snooze, ya lose!

One Healthy Breakdown: keep these tips in mind this week and you’ll be back on track in no time.

Big Weekend in Sag Harbor!

We all know that Memorial Day is the unofficial start of summer in the Hamptons, but I must say that this weekend is pretty big for Sag Harbor – our big chance to soak up as much of Sag before the summer chaos sweeps in…a walk on Main Street and dining al fresco are a must!

SagOther than the regular beauty around town, the Sag Harbor Farmer’s Market debuts on Saturday, May 16th (not the 17th like the sign says!) from 9am to 1pm. It’s with open arms that we welcome the Farmer’s Market back after a looooooong lacking fresh, green, locally grown goodness. If you’re elsewhere in the Hamptons, check out this list of Farmer’s Markets for the 2015 season.

FullSizeRenderAnd, for those of us who have been patiently awaiting the reopening of the newly renovated Sag Harbor Gym, it’s looking like Saturday is the day as well, so you can hit the gym and the farmer’s market. Sounds like a healthy weekend to me!

FullSizeRender_2In other news, if you haven’t checked out the new Harbor Market and Kitchen on Division and the newly expanded Provisions Market and Cafe, you’re missing out! Lastly, Baron’s Cove Hotel and Restaurant is back in business and looking beautiful after a full renovation.

Are YOU a FITiST?!

“FITiSTS are the ones who love fitness and wellness because they know how great it makes them look and feel.” Are YOU a FITiST?! If you haven’t checked out the new FITiST Collective at 5 Railroad Avenue in East Hampton, (the Summer Kicks building across from the railroad tracks) you’re missing out on one of the Hamptons’ best opportunities to get fit, fitter, FITiST.

FitistAdThe new FITiST Collective in East Hampton gathers the best in fitness all under one roof! Expect an unrivaled schedule of pop-up workouts, led by all-star instructors, including The Fhitting Room, Exhale, Body by Simone, 305 Fitness, Body Conceptions by Mahri, Bari Studio, City Row, Soho Strength Lab, ToneHouse, Uplift, and lots more!

If you’re like me, you’re not loving the rivalries between fitness studios, the competition in the market, and the lack of support that goes along with that. FITiST has demolished the competition and brought the best of the best together, under one roof, to provide unparalleled variety, fitness, and fun.

I’m a FITiST frequent flyer because I love the concept and the fact that I can catch one of my all-time favorite fitness classes, IntenSati, with Natalia Petrzela!

photo 1(7)Just like you see, IntenSati combines intention and awareness with fitness, positivity, and sweat! Not your average fitness class, IntenSati is a bit unexplainable, but chances are if you try it, you’ll be hooked like me. Do yourself a favor during these last few weeks of summer: try something new until you find a workout you LOVE. And then keep doing it! You can try all sorts of great classes at FITiST!

One Healthy Breakdown: If you’re a FITiST, I’ll see you there!

BIG HUGE NEWS! I’m Engaged!

I got engaged this past Friday to my boyfriend, (*fiancé*) Nick, who is the reason I’m here in the Hamptons in the first place. Growing up in Boston, I rarely ventured to the big apple and had never even been to the Hamptons until my first time visiting Nick early December, 2010. Between the Christmas lights around Southampton, the breath-taking beaches, adorable villages, and of course, meeting Nick’s amazingly fun, loving family made me fall in love with all things Hamptons. (If you can’t tell, I’m kind of obsessed with it here.) Anyway, I up and moved that May, (just in time for my first Hamptons summer!) and never looked back.

happyFriday, one of those beautiful beaches became the setting of our perfect engagement…after quite a crazy sequence of events. I have been known to send Nick on scavenger hunts to get his birthday presents in past years. Well, you know what they say about payback. The boy made me work for that bling, that’s for sure!

I got home Friday afternoon to find an envelope with clue #1 on our door saying to get my party dress on. Clue #2 stated to be ready (on time, not my strong suit) to set sail at 5:30.

hunthint1About 15 outfit-changes later and no boyfriend in sight, I arrived solo at the dock to find not Nick, but his Captain Aunt Linda on-board, to hand me clue #3.

lindaI was totally confused as I followed my next clue to the Wolffer wine stand, texting Nick that he had better be there (preferably with wine in hand.) After driving in Friday traffic to arrive at the overcrowded wine stand and parking what seemed like a mile away, I could have used something stronger than wine. Instead of Nick, two of my other favorite people approached me, Nick’s sister Danielle, and little Skye, clue in-hand.

#4I trudged back to my car and headed back out to face the traffic. Clue #4 sent me to our regular spot, Bobby Vans, where our favorite hostess handed me my next clue and sent me on my way.

BVsI got back on the road, back to the bumper-to-bumper, and headed towards the back bar at the Driver’s Seat. (Finally, I thought: my chance for that much-needed drink!) But, by the time I got there, I was so excited to get my final clue that I rushed through the restaurant, not hesitating to ask all of the hostesses “do you have a clue???” (they were just a bit confused to say the least.) I finally found Rob (Nick’s mom’s boyfriend) at the bar, having drinks with some friends he had made over the course of the hour before my arrival. Lucky for me, he had already had enough drinks for the both of us, so I carried on.

robAfter what I could only describe as a wild goose chase, I had finally gotten my last clue to head to Gin Lane, where the sea meets the land. Just as I drove towards the beach wondering where on earth to turn and park, I saw Nick’s cousin, Tyler, directing traffic. Thank goodness for this little one, I knew I was headed in the right direction, in more ways than one.

photo 4I kicked off my shoes and starting walking the beach when I finally heard Nick call my name. It was there, on Coopers Beach, with the sand between our toes, that we agreed to spend the rest of our lives together.

photo 2After a crazy few hours spent here, there, and everywhere, and a rush of emotions, I couldn’t wait another second to say yes. I am one lucky girl. I have the man of my dreams, the ring of my dreams, the job of my dreams, the best family in the world, and I finally got that much-needed glass of champagne…in the most beautiful place on earth.

photo 1Even better, my family surprised me from Boston and our two families got to celebrate together all weekend long.

photo 3And celebrate we did.

A lot.

Reset Button: Getting Back on Track

I don’t think I’m the only one who went a little overboard this weekend. I had my family in town and we packed a week’s worth of fun into a couple days: dinners out, cocktails, new recipes, barbecues, frozen yogurt with all the fixins, Sunday brunch, and lots of chocolate. We stayed active, but definitely indulged. While I’m not one to preach a strict diet on the weekdays and fun on the weekends, (balance is key!) sometimes we’ve just got to press the reset button. Today, I’m hitting reset and getting back on track, feel free to join me!

MP900386077

Drink LOTS of water, even more than normal. Start your day with at least one full glass of water. For a quick cleansing drink, add a squeeze of lemon juice and a few teaspoons of apple cider vinegar to your water. This clears out toxins and refreshes your system. Drink at least one full glass before every meal and carry a water bottle all day to stay hydrated. You can even spice up your water to make things more interesting…and lots of green tea is great too!

Eat whole foods. Your body is craving whole, real, nutrients, in their most natural form. Eat mostly fruits, veggies, and lean protein to replenish your body and refuel for the week ahead. Eat as many raw foods as you can and really try to stray away from sugar. My favorite way to get lots of raw greens in is my delicious green smoothie!

Work out HARD. Push yourself and dedicate a good hour to a great workout today. Whether you run, hit the yoga mat, strength-train, or take a class, make it count. Sweat out the bad and embrace the exercise, especially if you took a rest day yesterday like me. Your body will love you for it and come back twice as strong.

Get some sleep. A weekend packed with fun is exhausting and sleep is crucial in maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Take time to rest and relax and make sure you get your eight hours tonight.

Move on. Don’t regret those indulgences, cocktails, brunches, late nights, or chocolate covered peanuts (just me?). Don’t beat yourself up. Cherish the good memories and move on. Always work towards a balanced lifestyle.

One Healthy Breakdown: Life’s a journey, enjoy the ride and get back on track.

Brunch at Babette’s – Dilemma Solved!

When I first ventured to Babette’s (66 Newtown Lane, East Hampton) for brunch years ago, I knew I’d be back…again…and again. This place instantly jumped right to the top of my list of brunch spots, and for good reason. Just looking at the menu made me feel light, cheerful, and hungry! There’s something for everyone and everything is fresh and organic. From simple classics like pancakes, French toast, (Nick’s choice, pictured below) omelets, and eggs, to super creative creations too!

photo(25)First and foremost, Babette’s serves breakfast until 4:30pm, (as a huge fan of breakfast for dinner, this sits well with me) in addition to lunch and dinner too.

One of my all-time favorites is the poached eggs with market vegetables and pesto. It’s fresh, light, and pesto-freakin-tastic. The eggs were delish, super fresh, and the pesto added a flavor I could only dream of. The bed of veggies perfectly balanced the rich pesto flavor. I had a few bites of oatmeal too, which was simple and good. One of these days, I’ll get around to (attempting to) recreate this gem in my own kitchen (good luck to me.)
photo(23)

Our sunny, cozy table by the window also provided some good entertainment as East Hampton’s mid-morning crowd strolled down Newton Lane. Babette’s won my heart (and my stomach) long ago and I will be back soon for sure!

One Healthy Breakdown: Delightful and delicious – a must.
