September Stroll Challenge

We’re strolling right into September, so get your walking shoes ready! That’s right, this month’s challenge is super simple: walk every day. September is the perfect time to stroll – it’s not too hot, not too cold, and the turn of the season is something to be seen. In fact, this challenge is just as good for mental health as it is for physical health. Just like we rarely regret a workout, you surely will not regret taking a nice walk outside, even if just five minutes to break up the day. You may notice that the calendar is pretty bare – that’s where you come in. Some may only be able to break away for 5-10 minutes, while others may have an hour to spare (or stroll.) Just print and hang the calendar somewhere visible and track your own walking each and every day.

Hamptons Strolls are The Bee’s Knees

Since my twin girls were born in June, I’ve learned the benefits of long walks outdoors. We have a gigantic double stroller that I take everywhere. We especially enjoy strolling down to the local marinas in Springs to enjoy the fresh air and beauty.

IMG_3342The walking has kept mama happy and fit. I used to be a long-distance runner, but six marathons put a lot of wear-and-tear on my body. I needed an exercise that was not only easier on my joints, but one that the twins might enjoy as well. Long afternoon strolls have been the perfect solution.

As a city transplant, walking has been a great way for me to explore my new neighborhood and meet new neighbors. I’ve gotten to know places like Harbor Marina on Gann Road, Pussy’s Pond on School Street, and of course, Springs General Store on Old Stone Highway. I often chat with people I meet along the way; the most common question I get is “are those twins?” People are always intrigued, My one complaint: There aren’t enough sidewalks!

Much like running always did, walking has kept me grounded. As a new mom of multiples, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed…that’s a bit of an understatement! Getting outside, stretching my legs, and breathing fresh air definitely helps to clear my head. And the girls are always happy, as they enjoy the movement and the views.

We definitely plan to stroll during the holiday season, when the days are short and dark. The girls already have snowsuits in the event that we get some colder weather. We’ll continue to take walks down to the marinas to see how many boats remain. The harbor is always an oasis of calm, and a reminder of why we live here.

One Healthy Breakdown: sometimes the simpler the better. Stroll on!

Turkey Burn Baby Burn

The holidays are a time to indulge, absolutely! A little of this and a little of that, sure, but did you know that the average Thanksgiving meal totals about 4,500 calories and over two hundred grams of fat?! Shockingly, it’s true! Don’t you dare skip out on the fun – you can still enjoy your tasty turkey, beloved potatoes, and precious pie, in fact you should! In true Thanksgiving fashion, I give you these tips to burn it off, move it out, bounce back to balance, and regain your sanity!

Turkey-Trot-Logo-071. Sign up for a local Turkey Trot, a popular pre-feast 5k in various towns across the country. If you’re in the Hamptons, Montauk it is! If you don’t have a local trot, pick a playlist that fills you with energy and gratitude and head out for a run around your neighborhood. Even a couple of miles will rev your metabolism, get your endorphins going, and burn off a piece of pie. That “runner’s high” just may empower you to make better food choices all day long!

2. If you’re not going to trot, find a class. Luckily, you’re not the only one seeking a turkey day workout, so dedicate an hour to sweating before the cooking. Here are some of the many options:

  • Join Rachel at Exhale Bridgehampton at 8:10, 9:25, or 10:35am
  • Take 90 Minute Spin at Sag Harbor Gym 8am with Kerrie, John, and Cindy
  • Jim’s at Truth Training in East Hampton at 9:30am
  • LTB with Patti at Pure Barre Southampton at 9:30am
  • Jessy’s teaching open yoga 8:15 Friday at KamaDeva
  • Surf it off with Emma Friday 8am at Well Within
  • You can find Rachelle teaching at Flywheel at 8:30am
  • Turkey TRX with Linda at 8:45 Thurs and Fri. Gain some peace of mind at Silich Core + Strength in EH for Indo Board Yoga with Evelyn at 9:45 Fri.) ‘Tis the season for giving and Silich is offering unlimited classes for $200 thru Dec. 31, free yoga when you purchase 1 TRX class, and sales on personal training, gift bundles, gift cards, & youth packages!

Image-1(7)3. Walk it off. Instead of settling on the couch after your big meal, why not take a family walk? Leash the dog, rally the crew, bundle up, and take a spin around the neighborhood. Walking is the best non-workout workout because you can literally do it wherever you are (no excuses!) Your stroll will aid digestion, produce endorphins, and give you an opportunity to enjoy nature with loved ones.

4. Hit the yoga mat for a morning flow. As much fun as family holidays can be, sometimes they can get a little chaotic and stressful too. Anyone have that kinda family? Thought so. Yoga practice will get your body moving and your mind centered for the days events.

sunsalsOne Healthy Breakdown: wherever, whenever, however, just MOVE and give thanks for what our bodies can do for us!

Hi, From Sammy!

Hi! My name is Sammy and I’m One Healthy Hamptons’ new mascot. It’s nice to meet you!

This is my first blog post, so I’m pretty excited (my tail is wagging like crazy.) Kiley has told me a whole lot about you and One Healthy Hamptons. I’m on board with all this healthy stuff too, ya know. I love to exercise, (like chasing my tail…and dancing my tail off…) eat raw food, nibble on Granny Smith apples (organic, of course!) and sleep, sleep, sleep. The more food and sleep, sleep and food, the better. I may be a little guy now, but I’m growing up super fast!

I’m sure Kiley and I will keep you posted on our whereabouts. If you see us around town, say hi! I’ll be the one in black, brown, and white. I’ll be learning lots of tricks soon, so I will give you a paw if you ask. Kiley likes when I stay close, so she’s been attaching us together with this piece of string that goes around my neck. It’s weird. And itchy.

Oh, well. Could be worse. Gotta run, see you soon! Best wishes for a day full of treats!               Lots of licks ~ Sammy

One Healthy Breakdown: did somebody say treats????

P.S. Quick shout-out to my brother and three sisters! Wherever you are, if you’re reading this, I hope you’re happy and healthy too. Miss sleeping in a pig pile together, but things are good here in the Hamptons. Come visit us anytime, I have some extra room in my crate!

One Healthy Interior Designer

Introducing, Marie-Christine “MC” McNally, interior designer, Hamptons-lover, kick-ass spinner, newlywed, and owner of Marie-Christine Design, LLC!

MCprofile

1. Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did ‘life as you know it’ come to be? How did you get into interior design and what do you like best about it?

It’s been a slow and organic evolution. I started my adult life in the world of advertising and marketing. It was a great place to start life in NYC in my early 20’s — I loved the energy, the activity, and all the people I got to meet and work with. But, eventually I realized I wasn’t truly inspired by my work and slowly started the the process of finding what really drives me. I ended up leaving my career in advertising and going back to school for a post-graduate degree in interior design at the New York School of Interior Design. I have never looked back. After school, I landed an internship, and then a job with an amazing designer for three years and eventually took the leap to start my own business in 2008. Finding myself in the Hamptons happened much the same way. I started coming to the Hamptons through summer share houses in my early 20’s. Over the next decade, I found the pull of this place to be so strong, and realized it was my happy place. Over the years, I gradually started spending more and more time here. First it was Fridays, then Mondays and Fridays, now Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays whenever possible. While I still keep an office in NYC, and have to travel back and forth weekly, my husband and I call Sag Harbor home and I structure my life so that I am here as much as possible.

2. Is there any overlap between your love for design, which seems to involve simplicity, beauty, and functionality and your value for health, and wellness?

“Good design” in interiors and “good design” in lifestyle are so subjective and differ greatly from person to person. It’s all about finding what is right for you, what drives you, what makes you feel good, what makes you happy, and then making that your goal.

3. What piece of advice would you give to others about achieving goals?

Achieving your goals, be it professional or personal, is really all about overcoming your fears. But, if you believe you can do it, and you put the work and sweat into getting it done, I find it pretty amazing what we can all accomplish.

4. What is your favorite workout?

My favorite work-out is spinning! Nothing like getting lost in amazing music and the energy of a motivated group. It’s amazing to me that it consistently feels like fun instead of work. That’s why finding what you love makes achievement so much more attainable! When you enjoy it, you stick to it!

5. What’s your favorite weekend activity?

We have three large dogs at home and they all love to get out to play and run. They’re a wonderful motivator for getting outside and enjoying this beautiful place we live in. We are constantly taking walks on the beach or going for trail runs in the woods. Sunday mornings, sitting on the sofa, drinking my coffee, surrounded by my doggies and my husband is one of my favorite times. This is my time to re-charge.

MC

6. As a young woman, interior designer, wife, business owner, member of the NYC scene and the Hamptons community, etc., how do you maintain balance in your life?

Balance…? What balance?! 🙂 It’s hard. I often feel like a nomad and could easily get overwhelmed by all the moving parts. I think the key for me is to be organized so I can really maximize my time no matter where I am or what my task is. Also, being clear on my priorities is huge. On the bus into NYC, I use the quiet time to catch up on reading or email. In the city, I use the frenetic energy to keep me busy from morning to night, so I can get all my work done and get home. When I’m home, I take the time to re-charge and enjoy my family and friends. Working hard allows me to enjoy the downtime and enjoying the downtime is what allows me to work hard!

7. Any great healthy/balance tips for other busy woman?

You have to find what works for you. I really believe that different approaches gel for different people and it’s really important to keep searching until you find the right combination that works for you.

8. What food items do you always keep in your house?

Fruit and cereal! For me, cereal is a great snack and having fruit around gives me a way to get the sweets I often crave without going to candy (which I LOVE!). And coffee…..Lots of coffee….. 🙂

9. What is your favorite indulgence?

Naps! There is nothing like curling up in my comfy bed on a sunny afternoon for a quick nap.

10. How do you make health a priority in your home? My husband and I are both naturally active people with naturally active lives, so I feel lucky that we don’t have to make that effort, it just happens. We also both follow the same, “early to bed, early to rise” mantra, so we get lots of sleep. Other than that, we do our best to eat healthy, although neither of us really believes in dieting, depriving, etc. We just do our best where we can and it usually seems to fall into place!

11. What is your FAVORITE thing about living in the Hamptons?

It’s the life I have here that brings me happiness. My husband, our home, our dogs, and our friends make it what it is. It’s also about the natural beauty that I see everywhere when I’m here. It’s the villages, the beaches, and the lifestyle, the houses, the light, nature all around us…I leave here inspired every single time and am always so anxious to get back out to the Hamptons.

One Healthy Breakdown: Do the work and take the time to find out what really drives you, what really inspires you, what really makes you happy. Once you know, make it the priority and achieving all of your goals get so much simpler!

Do What You Can, With What You Have, Where You’re At

Just a little Monday post from the heart today. I spent the weekend in Richmond, Virginia for a family wedding. Our flight was delayed and we arrived really late Friday night/early Saturday morning. Exhausted. Although I typically have a plan for weekend workouts to fit my schedule, whether it’s a fitness class or two, squeezing in an early run if the day is packed, heading to the gym, etc. I went to bed upon our arrival at the hotel not really knowing what the weekend would bring. I didn’t have a plan or expectations, I figured I would just wake up and listen to my body. Although I was leaning towards taking the day off after a long week, I DID know that I would feel much better the entire weekend if I did get a workout in, somehow, somewhere. Although I went back and forth on whether or not to pack my sneakers, I threw ’em in last-minute just in case.

I let myself sleep in Saturday morning since we arrived so late, didn’t even set an alarm clock (crazy I know!) I woke up thinking I have two options: roll over and go back to bed until who knows when…OR get my butt up and out. Knowing I would just feel better all around if I got some sort of exercise in instead of sleeping late and rolling right into brunch, I chose the latter. I got my workout clothes on and went downstairs, unsure of what was to come, but already glad I hadn’t chosen to roll over. Sometimes that’s all it takes to get motivated: getting out of bed and lacing up your sneakers.

I figured I was in a new place and the sun was shining, might as well explore it. An easy couple of miles was exactly what I had in mind. I figured I’d get to see a little bit of Richmond and get myself moving. Well, when I asked the woman at the front desk of our hotel where I should go for a run (any good trails? any back roads? any scenery?) Nope, our humble abode was pretty much smack dab in the middle of a concrete jungle. She thought for a moment and said “you could run laps around the mall.” Hmm, not exactly what I was thinking, but why not? So, I headed out per her directions, quickly found Macy’s, and proceeded to run around the mall. I knew that passing cars were probably thinking I was nuts, but oh well, I got in a rhythm and zoned out. I even came upon a big gym and just ran right along by. Although cement scenery wasn’t exactly what I had pictured, it was a gorgeous day and I was just happy to be outside and not sleeping the day away.

photo(2)I ran around the mall and down a few side roads, making sure I wasn’t going to get myself lost in totally unfamiliar territories. After an easy three miles, I headed back to the hotel, feeling those exercise endorphins, excited for the day ahead. That runner’s high lasted all day believe it or not, which made every second of those 29 minutes, 53 seconds well worth it. I didn’t really push myself, didn’t break any records, didn’t go hard, or get a full-body workout. And that was A ok with me. I didn’t feel like a slacker while my friends at home had just finished the Hamptons Half-Marathon because my three miles were better than nothing. I did what I could, with what I had, where I was. Sometimes, that’s more than good enough. If you’re out of town or just out of your normal routine, listening to your body and making some sort of exercise a priority really is good enough. And ya know what? It’s a darn good thing I ‘explored’ our surroundings and found that mall because it kept us occupied all day!

One Healthy Breakdown: Do what you can. Better than nothing is usually good enough!
