Guess what…we’re lunging right thru March and stepping into spring! Here’s how to lunge: Stand up tall. Keeping your upper body straight, take a big step forward with one foot. Lower hips and bend front knee to a 90-degree angle. Repeat on the other side. Lunges work the entire leg and core, especially the glutes, hamstrings, and abdominals. Focus on these muscles when executing each lunge to maximize benefits. Some people like to place their hands on their hips and others like to hold them in front of them for balance. Commit today and print or pin the calendar below. Complete each set on BOTH legs (so, when it says 3 lunges, that’s three lunges each side for six total!)
October calls for trick-or-treating…and tricep toning! Here’s a little challenge to keep your motivation high. With a healthy attitude, you’ll be able to crush those sugar cravings, indulge moderately throughout the holidays, and keep right on toning!
To do a tricep push-up, get into a four-arm plank with arms extended, hands about six inches apart inside shoulders. Start on your knees until you feel strong. Lower chest towards floor by bending elbows straight back next to your sides, keeping your back straight. Push back up until arms are almost straight and repeat.

The low-impact moves can really be done anywhere, but the sequence of the Pure Barre method ensures a heightened sense of awareness and appreciation for this important connection. Concentrating on nothing but these movements allows guests to block out the chaos of life outside the door, creating a tranquil energy throughout the studio. The 55-minute workout targets all of those trouble zones head to toe, building long, lean muscles. While the technique stays consistent, the fun music and choreography sequence prohibit boredom and plateau. While you can always rely on that 90 second plank, working your booty ’til it hurts, and abs for days, the new routine keeps us coming back for more.

Happy October! Rejoice all of you pumpkin pie, apple turnover lovers, it’s YOUR time! Be sure to print out this October Challenge and get your squat on, especially if you’re indulging this month! Don’t let fall get the best of you!
Did you know that our glutes are the largest muscle in the body? So, when you work your glutes, you can burn lots and lots of calories in little time. Especially with squats! Squats aren’t fun and they aren’t easy, but they will burn calories, shape your be-hind, and utilize your legs and core as well. Just be sure that your form is correct to prevent injury and maximize each rep! If you typically incorporate squats into your workout routine, try for three sets of the allotted number of squats daily. (That means if it says 6, do 3 sets of 6 squats throughout the day, aka 18 total.) If you’re new to this butt-buster, keep it to one set daily. Squat on!
One Healthy Breakdown: The burn you’ll love to hate, this one will whip your bottom right into shape by Halloween!
After hearing lots of buzz this summer about SLT, I finally got to try it out for myself. When asked what to expect, my friend told (warned) me: “it’s like Pilates on steroids.” Yes, that’s just about exactly right. I was sore for days and days…which means…it works.
SLT’s Water Mill studio is new and clean, but the reformers of all reformers, Megaformers (aka torture chambers) aren’t particularly welcoming. Lucky for me, I got there early enough to see the previous class wrapping up. Each and every one had that clenched look of pain across their face…that got me a little nervous for what was to come, not going to lie. And I was right, pain was to come.
As you can see, the Megaformer has lots of tools and toys to sculpt in different ways. Various moves allow for heavy resistance for weight-training or lighter resistance for Pilates. Don’t try this at home, folks. We worked our abs, legs, glutes, obliques, back, triceps, biceps…is that all? It was a different sense of toning, more like pinching. The Megaformer creates motions we don’t usually perform with the body.
Did I mention how sore I was? I did like the fact that we packed so much in, just when your muscles wanted to explode and the pain became unbearable, it was time to switch to a new muscle group. Sweet relief.
It’s definitely impossible for this workout not to shape and tone. Good form and precision is key here, both for safety and for results. If you’re looking for a social workout, SLT isn’t it. You don’t go to this class to chit chat, you go to strengthen, lengthen, and tone. Good thing the music was good because it was the only distraction from the pinching pain.
One Healthy Breakdown: Consider this ‘the Mega-reformation of Pilates,’ if you will.
