One Healthy Breakdown: staying well in the Hamptons, all summer long!

A Weekend of Waves, Warmth, and Warriors

So, the past few weeks have been pretty tough. Bitter without the sweet. Long, cold frozen, windy, sniffly, snowy, slippery, and overall, pretty darn miz. Mother Nature just won’t budge. Don’t get me wrong, I really do love the Hamptons year round, but it’s about that time when I can totally understand how others migrate south for some sun, warmth, and beauty. Luckily, I totally got my fix of all of the above this weekend, right in our own backyard thanks to lululemon athletica East Hampton, three of the best lululemon ambassador yogis on Long Island, and Gurney’s Montauk.

IMG_0274The drive out to Montauk (sans traffic!) was decompressing in itself, but knowing that a weekend of yoga bliss lay ahead was even better. As we unrolled our mats in the Great Room, with the sun shining through the windows and waves crashing down at the beach, I quickly began to defrost and fill with warmth and gratitude.

The first of three classes on Saturday morning was taught by Lana Russo, lululemon ambassador at the Manhasset store. The class was pretty much exactly what I personally seek when signing up for a yoga class: a combination of feel-good stretching, challenging poses to push outside of the comfort zone, and a relaxing meditation. Lana does it all with a seamless flow, a warm heart, and some non-traditional yoga music. We’re talking a yoga-remix of Katy Perry’s “Roar” and such – what’s more fun than that?! Lana makes yoga more accessible to all levels as she breaks down advanced poses into manageable steps. Here’s Lana below, being the yogi rockstar that she is:

FullSizeRender(16)The second class, rounding out Saturday morning’s practice, was taught by Evelyn O’Doherty, local yoga teacher, SUP racer/instructor, lululemon EH ambassador, and friendly face we all know and love (if you don’t know Evelyn, you should.) It’s impossible not to get stronger during Evelyn’s class; her light-hearted style benefits all walks of life and all types of athletes. She has this amazing ability to make anyone smile, even when instructing challenging poses, burning abdominal exercises, and “hanging out” in plank. Evelyn’s smile always reminds us, that no matter what, it’s all going to be A ok. Here’s Evelyn practicing a playful, yet perfect, inversion:

FullSizeRender(17)After two and a half hours of Vinyasa Flow, Saturday afternoon was free for our choosing. I followed the crowd to the Seawater Spa and fell even deeper into ‘vacation mode as I sat by the Seawater Pool in my bikini, robe, and flip-flops. While it took some imagination, Montauk in February quickly became my own personal island retreat. I soaked up the goodness and sailed away into Shavasana…for the third time that day.

Saturday evening wrapped up with a Yin Yoga class taught by Angela Williams-Jones, owner of Flower Power Yoga and lululemon Ambassador at the Walt Whitman store. Lucky for me, Angela’s mat was next to mine during the morning classes, so I knew that whatever came next, there would be laughter and love. Yin is a restorative practice full of therapeutic poses to cleanse, balance, and regulate the body. Poses are held for at least a few minutes to increase circulation, enhance immunity, improve flexibility, maintain focus, and deconstruct emotion. Typically, Vinyasa produces discomfort the longer we’re in the pose; however, I found that Yin was just the opposite. At first, the poses were awkward and uncomfortable, but the longer we settled in, the better it got, especially knowing we were cleansing all of our major organs and systems of the body. Although I was exhausted, mentally and physically, after Saturday’s three classes, I couldn’t wait to get back to the mat the next day for more adventure with these amazing people.

Sunday morning’s class confirmed that Angela is so not your typical yoga teacher and this class was definitely not your typical yoga class. The Yoga Fusion Flow class took us through a series of songs, poses, emotions, stages, transitions, and experiences, some recognizably familiar and others new and different. That’s life, right? Just when we think we’ve mastered it, just when we become accustomed to the journey, just when we’ve settled in or fallen head over heels, we’re reminded that life is an ever-changing journey. Good or bad, things shift, we react, we sway, we readjust, shake it off, and keep going, hopefully with a big smile, a full heart, and possibly our yoga mat. Click here to see a quick clip of Angela’s heart-warming class!

580301_485743748146028_1073937593_nThis weekend was just that for me – a reminder that life is ever-changing, growing, supporting, experiencing, and full of love and opportunity. Not only did Gurney’s provide a rejuvenating escape, but I found that my personal yoga practice grew more in these two days than ever before. Stepping outside of my comfort zone on the mat came easily thanks to the three amazing ambassador yogis supporting us, teaching us, and making it all fun and playful. Thanks to lululemon athletica East Hampton, yogis Evelyn, Lana, and Angela, and Gurney’s Montauk for providing exactly what I needed, exactly when I needed it. Namaste!

picstitch(26)One Healthy Breakdown: When I drove into Montauk on Saturday, it was winter. When I left on Sunday, spring was in the air. Now that’s magic.

Gone Yogi

photo(177)Yoga is something we could all stand to do more often; the benefits are countless. Truth be told, I was not always a fan of yoga. I was one of those “yogis” who would look at the clock every two minutes wondering when it would end. Rarely did I ever make it thru shavasana. Bad yogi.

Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate yoga more and more…and a lot more. The sole benefit of stretching the body, aiding tight muscles, and countering high-impact workouts is reason enough to incorporate yoga into any routine.I learned to like yoga for the physical benefits, but I didn’t grasp the peace of mind part…yet.

When I moved to the Hamptons, I experienced that shift  My body, mind, and soul became open to the vast benefits of yoga, outside of just sore muscles. The physical stretching became the base level for further opening of the mind. We’re blessed to have so many amazing local yoga studios, a variety of classes, and gifted instructors. Maybe there’s something in the air here, but I finally learned to slow my breath, open my heart, and absorb yoga into my life. I not only sat thru shavasana, I learned to reap the benefits of sun salutations and meditation as well.

Just recently, I’ve actually gotten to the point of looking forward to going to yoga. Planning “yoga dates” with my girlfriends has become a regular occurrence. All of the sudden, my yoga mats have duplicated – one upstairs, one downstairs, one in my car…what’s happening?

I think I’m finally becoming a yogi. I’m no master, my flexibility is minimal and my balance is shaky, but I now place a high value on yoga in my day-to-day life…because I want to. Yoga is now a priority for my mind, body, and soul. And I highly recommend it to anyone who…I’ll stop there because I highly recommend yoga to anyone. I’ve learned that anyone can be a yogi and everyone should be, just unroll the mat and give it a try. Now. Seriously, move away from the computer and do a few sun salutations or just breathe deep in downward dog. You’ll thank me later.

One Healthy Breakdown: Rock on, yogis. You were right all along. Namaste.

Body Flow. Love Thy Flow.

I try a LOT of workout classes. Like, a lot. Some I love, some I don’t. Some I stick with, some I don’t. Year after year, I just keep coming back to Body Flow. Body Flow is Les Mills’ low-impact, low-intensity, highly-relaxing combination of yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi that’s sure to warm-up the body, heart, and soul.

IMG_2719

Similar to yoga, Body Flow centers and calms the mind while working the body. The 55 minute class, like most Les Mills’ classes, is divided into eight tracks. Class commences with a rhythmic Tai Chi warm-up to loosen the muscles and focus the mind on less rigid movements and more flow.

photo 4Following tracks vary between yoga and Pilates, from sun salutations to balance, an intense core track, all while stretching and toning each major muscle group. Every move to every track is choreographed to the music and the method.

photo 5While Body Flow is based on yoga, it is unlike a typical vinyasa in that the music and movements are constantly changing, keeping you on your toes. What’s not low-intensity? The ab track, that’s for sure. Les Mills doesn’t joke around when it comes to abs. Luckily, there are modifications for everything. You’ll burn some cals and widdle that middle.

The last track of any Body Flow class, possibly the most beneficial, is meditation, which reduces stress, increases relaxation, absorbs the movement, and focuses the mind for the rest of the day. These 10 minutes are immensely valuable, especially for people like me who have every intention of setting aside time each day to relax and reflect, however, life often gets in the way. I have a feeling you can relate? When I plan to attend a Body Flow class, I feel like I’m setting aside “me time” and I show up, always happy I did.

Everyone, from athletes to first-timers, yogis to non-yogis, male, female, younger, older, and everyone in between, can benefit from Body Flow. Regardless of your current ability, Body Flow’s poses, stretches, and moves will create suppleness, flexibility, focus, and rejuvenation. It’s the perfect compliment to your existing fitness routine and will strengthen balance, flexibility, and most importantly, mental relaxation. And the best part is that this class is available throughout the week at BOTH Hamptons Gym Corp and Studio 89 Fitness, taught by fabulous instructors, like Zivile and Yvonne featured.  IMG_2718(1)

Dream Body & Mind Re:TREAT

As you may or may not know, I spent the past three days at a Dream Body and Mind Re:TREAT in Southampton. This was a week of physical, spiritual, and emotional growth for me, indeed. After Monday’s Spirit Junkie Sati and my three-day juice cleanse, I feel like a whole new woman! And after this Re:TREAT, I can say I am!

cropped-RetreatHeader41While it’s humanly impossible to fully describe this experience, the purpose of Re:TREAT was to heighten awareness, perspective, and spirituality to create desired change and a more fulfilling life. Awareness of our physical being, spiritual being, mind-body connection, breath, life goals, conception of self, connection with others, emotions, past and present experiences, and so on. We did this through movement, learning, discussion, exploration, and breath.

Re:TREAT is lead by Cynthia Goerig-Waldrup and Michelle Weber (who you may have read about here!) Cyndi is a master coach and teacher who enriches people’s lives daily. Michelle is a fitness expert, specializing in pilates, gyrotonic, gyrokinesis, pre and post natal training, and celebrity personal training. Together, they make a mind-blowingly fabulous team.

With five women total, the group was tight-knit and personal. Five different personalities, all together for the same reason: personal growth. There was a comforting level of equality and care for others from the get-go. While we were lead through group activities, we also explored our own individual “stuff,” as there was a nice balance between group discussion, movement, and individualized attention. Cyndi and Michelle both lead the group in a very relaxed, approachable manner, setting structure while allowing for unforseen shifts, self-exploration, and supportive conversation.

We all have a story, a pattern, a way of living life that may not be our ideal, it may be a little bit different, or a lot different, from our dream life. These three days were all about identifying and ridding the old story and rewriting it with our dream-life. We’ve all heard of manifesting. If we manifest that our dreams will come true, that our ideals are reality, then it will come true, if we do the work to unblock our barriers first. If we believe in ourselves, our greatest fantasies will become reality. After all, is everyone’s goal in life not pure happiness? Good news: it’s absolutely possible for us all!

MP900387284One of the newer concepts to me is relating energy and vibrancy to all aspects of life. When we remain in lower vibrational patterns, we are weighted down. Movement and meditation, among others, can stimulate vibration, which elevates mood and energy. Everything has a vibrational frequency, the words you say, foods you eat, water you drink, music you listen to, and people who surround you. It was very interesting to learn about vibrational frequency and how it impacts our lives and level of happiness. This was just one of the many lessons Cindy and Michelle made us aware of during Re:TREAT. The point being that we control our own happiness. Re:TREAT gave us the tools to zone into this control and amplify results.

So, what happens next? I’m not sure, exactly and I think that’s the fun of it, because I am open to anything that comes my way. After three days at Re:TREAT, I see the world, and myself, a bit differently. I definitely have a heightened sense of awareness, and gratitude, and I’m loving that. I know that I want to treat myself and others better and I have every intention of doing so. I am embracing this contentment, but am also ready and available for more. If you crave a bit of enlightenment, supported self-exploration, or a whole new life story, I’d suggest contacting Cyndi and/or Michelle today. They offer a complimentary consultation to learn more about this program, so you’ll know if it’s right for you. I definitely feel honored to have been a part of Re:TREAT, it was quite a treat.

One Healthy Breakdown: Don’t be afraid to take a chance and sign yourself up for some personal growth. Keep your eyes peeled for Michelle and Cindy’s next Re:TREAT.

Physique 57: Pain Is Gain

Physique 57 is KILL-ER. Founded by Jennifer Vaughan Maanavi and Tanya Becker, Physique is a barre-inspired fitness technique meant to create a physique that combines the picturesque ‘dancer’s body’ with today’s strong, empowered women. Located in Bridgehampton, NYC, LA, and spreading, Physique is popular among celebrities, moms-to-be using the prenatal DVD right in their own living room, and everyone in between for good reason.

Focused on the large muscle groups, (thighs, abs, glutes, and arms) which burn the most calories, with small-twitch movements creates precision…and pain! Ok, I made it almost four sentences without saying the word pain. Yes, this is a painful class, but pain is gain. These tiny painful movements are killing fat, blasting cals, and toning the muscles. Physique 57 makes the claim of producing visible results in weeks and I don’t doubt it. The method is meant to strengthen and then lengthen quickly, with intervals of intense work followed by stretches to elongate the muscles and increase flexibility.
photo 1First, we warmed-up and got right into arms. I stuck with five-pound weights, which was tough, but doable (shockingly.) This may be the only part of class I’d label “doable.” We then upped-it a notch with push-ups and planks before our first of many sets of thighs…ah thighs. Enter, pain.

Just a few minutes into class, I was feeling the burn pain when Meredith said, “when it starts to get hard, we start to get negative. Stay positive! Thighs burn the most calories of any muscle group!” Easier said than done, but it was enough to push me through the set. Physique’s method of “Interval Overload” simply means pushing the muscles to exhaustion with lots of reps, and then some more after that, to really tone.

photo 2This isn’t exactly a ‘sweaty’ class, but it definitely gets your heart pumping. It’s the best of both worlds because you get your cardio and simultaneously sculpt and lengthen. This was my second “mixed” Physique 57 class with Meredith in Bridgehampton. If this is a “mixed” class, I can’t imagine surviving an ‘advanced’ class. The philosophy is ideal, though: you can always modify or take a quick break, but the class will always challenge you. It’s better to set the ‘barre’ high and modify than having anyone walk out of class thinking it was too easy. Yeah, that won’t happen. Ever.

Meredith is super nice and bubbly, but when class starts, she gets down to business. Why? Because she knows firsthand how effective this workout can be and she wants each and every member of the class to gain the maximum benefits. She explains that she’s looking for that shake, that muscle twitch to show that change is happening (yes, my muscles were a’twitchin.) Meredith has the grace of a dancer and the strength of a fitness professional. She clearly takes it upon herself to bring energy into the room and to turn each person’s muscles to jello. Physique 57 is tough, but Meredith’s personalized coaching and energy really make you want to take it one step further.photo 5Physique is really a full-body workout focused on hitting all large muscle groups. Your glutes will love to hate ‘pretzel’ and don’t even get me started on ‘waterski.’ I always knew waterskiing was not my sport and this has been re-confirmed. The back, obliques, shoulders, bi’s, and tri’s won’t feel neglected either, there’s something to target them all.

57’s perks? Strength, flexibility, bone density, body alignment, balance, and more. But, does it ever get easier? No. Never. In fact, it may just get harder as you get better. Meredith even admitted after class that she struggles during thighs when she is able to take the class herself. She said people look at her like “you’re an instructor, you should be able to do this easily!” but the point is: it never gets easy! I asked Meredith what makes Physique different from other barre classes; we agreed it’s the perfect combination of pace and intensity.

Physique 57 also sells their DVD’s and workouts online so that you can feel the burn pain right at home. What will you miss? The pressure of getting it right every time, Meredith’s awesome personality, and the space (ie: super-duper clean carpets and huge mirrors to watch yourself make that scrunched-up ouch face up close and personal.)

One Healthy Breakdown: Don’t let the ballet barre or the cute blond fool you, Physique 57 will make you work for that stretch and yes, you’ll gain from the pain.

KamaDeva – Practicing Yoga With Heavenly Passion

photo 1

“KamaDeva” is the god of heavenly passion, which perfectly defines the energy at KamaDeva Yoga (Lumber Lane, Easthampton.)  Upon entering the bright, bold, newly-painted studio, an invigorating tone was set and I just knew I was ending my afternoon right.  Evelyn instantly made me feel welcome, at ease, and excited to begin class.

We began by initiating our awareness of the breath, consciously inhaling deeply into the core and exhaling powerfully, as if we were getting rid of any negative energy.  Breathing in the good and letting go of the bad.  Since I consider myself a beginner yogi, and have been for some time now, I SO appreciate the effect of a good yoga breath.  The busy world around me settled a bit as my body relaxed and my mind focused on the moment, the moment of heavenly passion: KamaDeva.

“Learning to breathe consciously,” Evelyn explains, “is greatly beneficial in times of great stress, because if we can learn to breath slowly and deeply, no matter what is going on, we then stand a chance to think clearly, act from the heart, and move forward with confidence.”  This practice was especially pertinent during the week of recent crisis following the Boston Marathon.  Evelyn referred to the traumatic events in Boston and we set our intention for the class to open our souls and extend our hearts, especially in times like these, to be able to stay strong. We performed numerous poses to open our hearts and offer compassion; pushing our chest out and reaching our arms to the sky to accept the love that can overpower and conquer the world’s anger.

Equally important is establishing a foundation and stabilizing a strong connection between our feet and the ground. The combination of intentional breaths and a sturdy foundation, feeling that we are right where we’re supposed to be, gets us through life’s challenges.  We stretched long up to the sky as we kept our feet planted strong, acknowledging the power we have when we’re one with the earth, and each other.  Acknowledging this power and togetherness was a great gift Evelyn gave me that day, one that will last long beyond the time limit of the class.

Evelyn

Following our ‘opening poses,’ we moved to sun salutations, warrior, and hip openers to actively loosen the stress in our bodies and welcome tranquility.  Evelyn seemed to predict exactly where I needed an extra stretch, incorporating a challenge that felt more like an opportunity for growth than a workout.  The class flowed seamlessly, allowing us to settle deeper into each pose. I didn’t even think about time as I was truly focused in each moment and was surprised when it was already time for Savasana.

Evelyn’s calm voice, genuine nature, and consistent smile brought another level of serene optimism to the practice.  We opened our hearts, planted our feet, and welcomed spring with open arms.  I walked out of class that day knowing that I could take on more, somehow the weight on my shoulders did not seem so heavy.  I’d definitely recommend KamaDeva and Evelyn’s classes for your yoga needs. The studio offers classes for all skill levels, interests, and intentions, from “yoga dork/basics” to “rock n roll flow,” which I am definitely looking forward to trying.

One Healthy Breakdown:  Yoga with Evelyn at KamaDeva is nothing but heavenly practice, in a heavenly place, with one goddess of a yogi.
