Wellthily Infuses Wellness at Gurney’s

OHH AdYour wealth is your health. Right? That’s the premise of innovative company, Wellthily, infusing health and wellness everywhere they go. Providing on-site experiences, products, and programming, Welthilly is generating change, increasing engagement, and improving experiences at “the end” this summer. OHH is happy to support the wellth.

After a full renovation, Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa redefined good old Gurney’s Inn. If you haven’t been, you must go. Now. The spa, the view, the food…the wellness! Holy wellness. I experienced it for myself in the form of candlelit hip hop yoga. It’s a thing. And it’s awesome, thanks to Y7 Studio for kicking my wannabe-yogi down dog to Nicki Minaj and Lil’ Wayne. Best. Friday. Night. Class. Ever. And it’s only just begun.

Lauren MAccording to Wellthily (we concur) this is the summer of wellth and we’re happily wellcoming Wellthily to Montauk all summer long! While “the end” clearly takes the cakes (and by cake, we mean green juice) in beachy chic, share houses, and day parties, Wellthily delivers celebrity workouts, beach yoga, wellness chats, healthy cocktails, gourmet eats, and lots more…all while keeping things cool, calm, and collected just like Montauk we know and love.

lifeway square bannerBoth weekday and weekend classes will be offered to guests, locals and visitors. The resort aims to bring together the local community, weekenders, and hotel guests. Wellthily programming will target anyone looking to sweat, stretch, center and revitalize. Yup, I think that’s all of us. So check out the line-up and join One Healthy Hamptons and Lifeway Foods for a blowout yoga event benefiting Test400K, which empowers healthy and safe communities by ending violence against women and children. It’s going down July 11th from 9am-2pm. From yoga to healthy Lifeway Kefir Smoothies, live music, and an expert panel on wellness, mindfulness, fitness and holistic living, this is one not to be missed.

Furthering their commitment to wellness and health, Gurney’s guest rooms will include Wellthily healthy travel kits available for purchase this summer. A Weekend of Waves, Warmth, and Warriors

So, the past few weeks have been pretty tough. Bitter without the sweet. Long, cold frozen, windy, sniffly, snowy, slippery, and overall, pretty darn miz. Mother Nature just won’t budge. Don’t get me wrong, I really do love the Hamptons year round, but it’s about that time when I can totally understand how others migrate south for some sun, warmth, and beauty. Luckily, I totally got my fix of all of the above this weekend, right in our own backyard thanks to lululemon athletica East Hampton, three of the best lululemon ambassador yogis on Long Island, and Gurney’s Montauk.

IMG_0274The drive out to Montauk (sans traffic!) was decompressing in itself, but knowing that a weekend of yoga bliss lay ahead was even better. As we unrolled our mats in the Great Room, with the sun shining through the windows and waves crashing down at the beach, I quickly began to defrost and fill with warmth and gratitude.

The first of three classes on Saturday morning was taught by Lana Russo, lululemon ambassador at the Manhasset store. The class was pretty much exactly what I personally seek when signing up for a yoga class: a combination of feel-good stretching, challenging poses to push outside of the comfort zone, and a relaxing meditation. Lana does it all with a seamless flow, a warm heart, and some non-traditional yoga music. We’re talking a yoga-remix of Katy Perry’s “Roar” and such – what’s more fun than that?! Lana makes yoga more accessible to all levels as she breaks down advanced poses into manageable steps. Here’s Lana below, being the yogi rockstar that she is:

FullSizeRender(16)The second class, rounding out Saturday morning’s practice, was taught by Evelyn O’Doherty, local yoga teacher, SUP racer/instructor, lululemon EH ambassador, and friendly face we all know and love (if you don’t know Evelyn, you should.) It’s impossible not to get stronger during Evelyn’s class; her light-hearted style benefits all walks of life and all types of athletes. She has this amazing ability to make anyone smile, even when instructing challenging poses, burning abdominal exercises, and “hanging out” in plank. Evelyn’s smile always reminds us, that no matter what, it’s all going to be A ok. Here’s Evelyn practicing a playful, yet perfect, inversion:

FullSizeRender(17)After two and a half hours of Vinyasa Flow, Saturday afternoon was free for our choosing. I followed the crowd to the Seawater Spa and fell even deeper into ‘vacation mode as I sat by the Seawater Pool in my bikini, robe, and flip-flops. While it took some imagination, Montauk in February quickly became my own personal island retreat. I soaked up the goodness and sailed away into Shavasana…for the third time that day.

Saturday evening wrapped up with a Yin Yoga class taught by Angela Williams-Jones, owner of Flower Power Yoga and lululemon Ambassador at the Walt Whitman store. Lucky for me, Angela’s mat was next to mine during the morning classes, so I knew that whatever came next, there would be laughter and love. Yin is a restorative practice full of therapeutic poses to cleanse, balance, and regulate the body. Poses are held for at least a few minutes to increase circulation, enhance immunity, improve flexibility, maintain focus, and deconstruct emotion. Typically, Vinyasa produces discomfort the longer we’re in the pose; however, I found that Yin was just the opposite. At first, the poses were awkward and uncomfortable, but the longer we settled in, the better it got, especially knowing we were cleansing all of our major organs and systems of the body. Although I was exhausted, mentally and physically, after Saturday’s three classes, I couldn’t wait to get back to the mat the next day for more adventure with these amazing people.

Sunday morning’s class confirmed that Angela is so not your typical yoga teacher and this class was definitely not your typical yoga class. The Yoga Fusion Flow class took us through a series of songs, poses, emotions, stages, transitions, and experiences, some recognizably familiar and others new and different. That’s life, right? Just when we think we’ve mastered it, just when we become accustomed to the journey, just when we’ve settled in or fallen head over heels, we’re reminded that life is an ever-changing journey. Good or bad, things shift, we react, we sway, we readjust, shake it off, and keep going, hopefully with a big smile, a full heart, and possibly our yoga mat. Click here to see a quick clip of Angela’s heart-warming class!

580301_485743748146028_1073937593_nThis weekend was just that for me – a reminder that life is ever-changing, growing, supporting, experiencing, and full of love and opportunity. Not only did Gurney’s provide a rejuvenating escape, but I found that my personal yoga practice grew more in these two days than ever before. Stepping outside of my comfort zone on the mat came easily thanks to the three amazing ambassador yogis supporting us, teaching us, and making it all fun and playful. Thanks to lululemon athletica East Hampton, yogis Evelyn, Lana, and Angela, and Gurney’s Montauk for providing exactly what I needed, exactly when I needed it. Namaste!

What’s a Spirit Junkie Sati?!

Yesterday was one of those days. One of those life-altering days I’ll never forget. I spent the day with Gabby Bernstein and Patricia Moreno at The Surf Lodge for their second annual Spirit Junkie Sati (#spiritjunkiesati.) Amazingness. In the sun. On the bay. In Montauk. On a yoga mat. Making history.

photo 3Gabby kicked off the morning with Kundalini Kriyas – sets of exercises, with both physical and physiological meaning and purpose. Just hearing Gabby speak can put you at ease. Doing yoga with her, that’s a whole other story. Our first Kriya is meant to bust through blocks, to bust through what holds you back in life. Another Kriya strengthened the spine; as Gabby explained, a healthy spine is a healthy life.

photo 1Having been lucky enough to have gotten to know Gabby a bit and being halfway through May Cause Miracles, I was excited to learn what Kundalini Yoga is all about. As opposed to classic yoga, which is usually more individually up to interpretation, Kundalini yoga speaks to one purpose at a time. There is a Kriya for everything. I mean everything. Look it up. Try one. As Gabby says, expect miracles.

Then, Gabby had us do something amazingly effective. A tool I will definitely keep in my back pocket and use often. You should too. To wrap up our Kundalini hour, we “shook it out” and we shook it good. Sitting on our yoga mats, we shook our arms overhead for three + minutes. We shook all of the crap that holds us back, all of the negativity, all of the problems, the constant sadness on the news, the anger, the pain, the resentment…any of that heavy stuff that weighs us down…SHAKE IT OUT! Seriously, try it now. Standing or sitting cross legged, with your arms overhead, knowing you’re getting it all OUT. Shake all that stuff you don’t need right out the tips of your fingers. Shake furiously. Even yell a little if you want to or blast some really loud music if you want. Get it all out. And then breathe, regroup, and start fresh. Phew.

After about an hour of Kundalini, we broke for an amazing lunch thanks to Byron – The Surf Lodge’s Restaurant (which I must say has jumped to my top 10 list.) The food is fresher than fresh, simple, delicious, healthy, and even better, local! If you’re ever in or around Montauk, definitely stop in to Byron at The Surf Lodge for a meal. Just a heads up, if you’re there on a weekend, it’s packed…and I mean PACKED. Be prepared to relax on the bay and have a few drinks. If I were you, I’d make a day of it. In fact, I often do.

photo 5After a nice long lunch, Patricia (two words: ROCK STAR) graced the stage. From the moment she opened her mouth, the energy was astounding. Contagious. Mind-blowing. And pretty freaking awesome. She put us on the spot and I’m going to do the same to you: spend one minute (yes, 60 whole seconds) telling someone how great you are, the awesome things you do, how much you love your body and yourself, the obstacles you’ve overcome…Can you do it? Can you spend 60 seconds saying only good things about yourself? I couldn’t either. A minute of self-promotion is HARD. But, a minute of complaining would be easy as pie, right?! That’s her point, that’s what Patricia turns upside down: the fact that we’ve been trained to think and speak more negatively than positively, which often holds us back from pure bliss, greatness, and self-love. As Patricia said: “it’s inspiring to hear people thrive. Just like negative thought can make us negative people, positive thoughts can turn that right around. What thought has done, thought can undo.” Amen, sister. Think, say, and do better for yourself and better things will come. Really, they will. Gabby and Patricia said so.

Patricia invented IntenSati, an aerobic workout NEVER been done before. It’s dance, cardio, yoga, martial arts, intervals, oh and loud and proud affirmations all at the same time. No, you haven’t done something like this before. There is nothing like this workout. IntenSati is a workout for the mind just as much as the body. It’s a cleanse, a detox, an inspiration, an enlightening. There really are no words, just find a class and DO IT, trust me. And, if you come upon a future Spirit Junkie Sati lead by Patricia and Gabby, DO IT. Trust me. And if you stumble upon something that sounds cool that you kinda want to do, but aren’t sure what to expect, something the fearless version of you would do in a heartbeat, DO IT. Trust me.

photo 5One Healthy Breakdown: That’s Patricia’s awesome sweatshirt. Sunny and happy, just like our Spirit Junkie Sati. Oh, and I’m sore. Between Gabby’s 26 frog poses and Patricia’s powerful punches, my body hurts, I’m beyond exhausted, and I’m totally enlightened.photo 4

Bridal Bliss with Mindful Turtle

picstitch(2) Mindful Turtle, well-known yoga & wellness center in Stonybrook is summering in Montauk this season, offering regular yoga classes and a unique service for wedding parties.  This past Saturday, I got to witness their special wedding yoga as Danielle and Diane of Mindful Turtle gave Rachel, Andrew, and their loved ones quite a gift on their special day.

Taking place in the farmhouse at the Montauk Yacht club, wedding guests gathered in a morning yoga class by the fire, overlooking the foggy Montauk waters. Even on a cloudy day, this classic Montauk view is captivating, the gray waters serene. Danielle began the class with simple breathing and focusing on the here and now; “there are not many places more beautiful than where we are right now.” These simple words clearly hit close to my heart, as I believe that this beautiful place we’re surrounded by is definitely a key to happiness. As Rachel, the beaming bride explained, Montauk was chosen because the setting is similar to California, but close for New York relatives, the best of both worlds.

Have you ever done yoga by the fire with floating candles, a water view, surrounded by family and friends? As one wedding guest stated on her way out, “all weddings should start with yoga!” Excitement and enthusiasm for the day was awakened and nerves were calmed through an hour of deep breathing, stretching, meditation, and the energy of each others company. I was so happy to be able to witness this once-in-a-lifetime experience…if you’re a bride-to-be, read carefully!

Before the class, the room was full of family chatting, hugging, and embracing one another for the joyous occasion. As soon as everyone hit the mats, serenity instantly spread about the farmhouse. The simple gift of slowing down and breathing, taking the day moment by moment, must have been invaluable for the couple, not allowing a second of their special day pass by unappreciated.

Diane led the group through sun salutations, one after another after another, aligning the movement with the breath until the whole group was in sync. And then something amazing happened, Diane was silent. The breath and connection of a family lead the group through the movements in silence.

The class continued with a range of poses, simple movements allowing the muscles to stretch and relax without challenging the mind, keeping the focus on the special occasion. Danielle and Diane are a perfect team; Danielle calms the group with her soft voice while Diane’s dynamic approach fosters focus. Together, the two create a unique class geared for all levels: stretching, breathing, decompressing, appreciation, smiles, and even a little laughter.

picstitch(1)

Diane wrapped up with a love poem, mentioning love that is soft and strong, lost and found with each other’s love, much like the experience of being in this unfamiliar place, but together, needing only love. The look on Rachel’s face after class, the look on all of their friends and family, the gift of peace and relaxation to start a hectic day, was invaluable. Rachel commented that the rest of her day will be crazy, but thankfully, she can embrace it with ease and enjoy it fully after the hour of yoga.  Rachel and mother of the bride Katherine would definitely attest to the fact that this was a most worthwhile experience on a much-anticipated day.

In addition to Mindful Turtle’s (South Erie Ave, Montauk) regular classes, Danielle and Diane offer an abundance of wedding options, enabling Hamptons’ brides to experience the gift of yoga, uniquely customized for them. Options range from an intimate couples “We Do” class, a bridal party core yoga, relaxation, and aromatherapy, a private Stand-Up Paddleboarding “Montauk Mermaid” class, and endless other possibilities. Mindful Turtle is “dedicated to helping each bride unify all aspects of herself – physical, emotional and spiritual – in honor of the miraculous bridal experience.”

One Healthy Breakdown: a calm bride is a happy bride; a happy bride is a yogi bride.
