Body Flow. Love Thy Flow.

I try a LOT of workout classes. Like, a lot. Some I love, some I don’t. Some I stick with, some I don’t. Year after year, I just keep coming back to Body Flow. Body Flow is Les Mills’ low-impact, low-intensity, highly-relaxing combination of yoga, Pilates, and Tai Chi that’s sure to warm-up the body, heart, and soul.

Similar to yoga, Body Flow centers and calms the mind while working the body. The 55 minute class, like most Les Mills’ classes, is divided into eight tracks. Class commences with a rhythmic Tai Chi warm-up to loosen the muscles and focus the mind on less rigid movements and more flow.

photo 4Following tracks vary between yoga and Pilates, from sun salutations to balance, an intense core track, all while stretching and toning each major muscle group. Every move to every track is choreographed to the music and the method.

photo 5While Body Flow is based on yoga, it is unlike a typical vinyasa in that the music and movements are constantly changing, keeping you on your toes. What’s not low-intensity? The ab track, that’s for sure. Les Mills doesn’t joke around when it comes to abs. Luckily, there are modifications for everything. You’ll burn some cals and widdle that middle.

The last track of any Body Flow class, possibly the most beneficial, is meditation, which reduces stress, increases relaxation, absorbs the movement, and focuses the mind for the rest of the day. These 10 minutes are immensely valuable, especially for people like me who have every intention of setting aside time each day to relax and reflect, however, life often gets in the way. I have a feeling you can relate? When I plan to attend a Body Flow class, I feel like I’m setting aside “me time” and I show up, always happy I did.

Everyone, from athletes to first-timers, yogis to non-yogis, male, female, younger, older, and everyone in between, can benefit from Body Flow. Regardless of your current ability, Body Flow’s poses, stretches, and moves will create suppleness, flexibility, focus, and rejuvenation. It’s the perfect compliment to your existing fitness routine and will strengthen balance, flexibility, and most importantly, mental relaxation. And the best part is that this class is available throughout the week at BOTH Hamptons Gym Corp and Studio 89 Fitness, taught by fabulous instructors, like Zivile and Yvonne featured.  IMG_2718(1)

Body Combat: The Real Life Video Game

Body Combat is one of the few exercise classes I’ve been going to for years without it getting old. It’s like a real life video game because participants perform kicks and punches as though in a real fight. Just like most things in life, what you put into Combat, you get out. You can go through the motions or you can kick the motions ass. Luckily, the instructors at Hampton Gym Corp motivate you to be fierce, fast, and powerful, maximizing each and every one of the 55 minutes.

The class is divided into 9 tracks and lots of intervals. You’ll learn combinations and perform them at different levels to vary the heart rate. It’s intense cardio with mixed martial arts; boxing, taekdwondo, tai chi, karate, and muah thai. I’ve mastered self-defense moves I wouldn’t normally know, like uppercut, hook, roundhouse, side kick, and back kick. These practices are tied to the rhythm of upbeat songs, some old and some new. The tracks switch between lower and upper body, hitting most muscle groups more than once. I love the post-combat burn, I always feel it in my upper back and shoulders the next day. It’s just as empowering as the class itself.

Body Combat is one of Hampton Gym Corp’s many Les Mill group fitness class offerings. There’s nothing better than that adrenaline rush you get in a full room of “Combatters.” Sure, you may feel silly when you’re a little behind on the combo your first time, or when asked to yell as you punch or kick, but the group fierceness in the room makes everything ok. And fuels your energy to win the fight. I was hooked from the start. There’s something for everyone and everyone can benefit from Body Combat.

BODYVIVE: The Fun Functional Workout

Are you searching for a fun, effective, all-over heart-pounding workout? Look no further than BODYVIVE: the functional workout that trains the entire body! LES MILLS’ BODYVIVE is a low-impact class that incorporates cardio, balance, resistance, and core. It is perfect for all ages and all fitness levels.

Vive

I first tried BODYVIVE back in March when Sag Harbor Gym added it to the schedule and I haven’t missed a class since! The instructor, Jacqui Perrine, is incredibly fun; she keeps us on our toes and always delivers a fantastic class. Knowing that I am a BODYPUMP-aholic, Jacqui convinced me to try BODYVIVE in order to change up my routine and get faster results. I’m so glad I did. BODYVIVE is a class for anyone and everyone. Whether you’re looking to change up your routine, get more fit, or lose those last few pounds, this is the class for you!

BODYVIVE starts with a warm-up that previews many of the moves you will see later in the class. Jacqui then leads us through 25 minutes of low-impact cardio…but don’t be fooled, low-impact does not mean low intensity! These moves really get the heart pounding while working speed and agility. Sometimes, Jacqui has us working with the VIVE ball, a small exercise ball, to further activate the muscles. The cardio moves are easily modified for all levels and customizable for injuries. Following the cardio warm-up is active recovery; a sequence of moves inspired by Tai-Chi and yoga to slowly bring the heart rate down and prepare us for what is coming. So, what’s coming?!

After bringing the heart rate down, it is time to pump it back up during the functional strength-training portion of the class. We use the VIVE tubes to train the upper and lower body. Working with the tubes greatly increases muscular strength and endurance, improving posture at the same time. We then move on to core work, where we strengthen the abs and back. Finally, we end the class with a series of relaxing stretches that cool down the body and protect us from injuries. This class definitely takes you there, and then brings you back.

My other favorite thing about this class is the music: an eclectic mix of everything from top 40 hits to 80s rock. How can you not have fun when you are working out to AC/DC or The Rolling Stones?! I can personally say that BODYVIVE has improved my posture incredibly and helped me make great fitness advances. I consider myself a pretty active person and I have benefited so much from this program. It is a great compound-workout that fits cardio, strength, and core in to one hour, and is fun and accessible for everyone. BODYVIVE is enjoyed by all generations, I even take the class with my mom!

You can try BODYVIVE with Jacqui at the Sag Harbor Gym on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8:30am. If you are not a member of the gym and would like to try the class, email Jacqui at jacquiperrine@yahoo.com for more information.

My Challenge for You: Challenge Yourself

MP900387254(1)

Challenging ourselves is what makes us grow, physically and emotionally.  Pushing ourselves, setting goals, expanding horizons, trying new things, and accomplishing objectives make us more confident and make the world a better place.  When I started One Healthy Hamptons, I made a promise to myself that I would try more things outside of my comfort zone and take advantage of more opportunities that come my way, even if it’s something I can’t see myself doing.  I’m going to challenge you to challenge yourself this month because the outcome is amazing.

Although it’s much easier to go about our daily routines, stay within our comfort zone, and rely on the things we already know and love, it’s also pretty boring.  Yes, we should all have ongoing goals in life that we’re confident we can achieve, but what about when we’re not sure we can do it?  What about goals that may not be achievable?  Goals we may think are out of our realm of capability, goals we may ultimately fail to reach.

Why am I asking you to set a goal you may not be able to achieve?  Because the growth that you’ll experience during the process, the time spent reaching for that goal, will be priceless, trust me.  Pushing ourselves to reach a goal we may not think we can achieve takes an immense amount of work, effort, focus, planning, and, most of all, support.

This past weekend, I spent 20 hours in a small room with a few other girls for a Les Mills Body Flow training.  Seven girls with seven different lifestyles, strengths, and weaknesses, came together to push ourselves and each other.  From fitness professionals to librarian or teacher, these women all brought their own skills and personalities to the table and I honestly don’t think we could have done it without each other, at least I know I couldn’t have.

I haven’t met a more supportive group of people in a long, long time.  Most of the girls were there to go through the mandatory steps to eventually teach Body Flow, of course, but that wasn’t necessarily my goal.  I committed myself to attend the training, soak up the information, learn about myself, and do my best.  To be honest, I had little confidence that I would actually pass the course and move on to become a Body Flow instructor, but for me that wasn’t the point.  The ultimate goal was simply to take advantage of the opportunity as much as possible.  And that I did.

Turns out, I actually passed the training, but the reward for me was the experience: developing my physical skills, finding my ability to coach, gaining knowledge, and most of all, giving and receiving unbelievable support and connection with others in the room.  There’s nothing like undergoing an immense challenge, a long weekend, and a learning experience with a group of people to prove to yourself you can do something you may think you can’t.

This goal of mine really had an unexpected ending; however, the act of committing to something out of my comfort zone, fulfilling this commitment, and giving it my all gave me more satisfaction than I can even explain and I want you to experience that for yourself!

So, how do you choose a goal outside of your comfort zone?  Imagine you are completely unstoppable, that nothing is impossible. In this case, your superhuman version of yourself, what would be one thing you would take on?  Now, do it.  Commit yourself to try, to experience the journey, and to do your best, regardless of the outcome.  Whether it’s a physical goal, an emotional commitment, or a combination of the two, identify a goal and embrace the experience!

One Healthy Breakdown: our passion and commitment, in combination with support and connection with others, is an unbelievably powerful force not to be reckoned with.
