French Toast for One

French toast, anyone? Sometimes, we all need a breakfast packed with sweet comfort. This is not your average brunch-order french toast, no matter how you slice it.

22This french toast for one is made of super healthy ingredients to fuel your day. The perfect combination of whole-grains for energy, protein for satiety, and deliciousness to boot. Plus, it doesn’t take an hour to prep or bake, because you don’t even need an oven! Here’s how:

Ingredients: (makes one serving, double for two or if you’re having a larger meal – like a bigger brunch in place of both breakfast and lunch)

  • 1 slice of Ezekiel bread (or another whole-grain bread, I prefer Food for Life’s cinnamon raisin)
  • 1 whole egg + 1 egg white
  • 2 teaspoons almond milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup berries or 1/2 sliced banana (optional)
  • pure maple syrup, grass-fed butter, and/or nut butter to top (all optional)

IMG_3321Instructions:

Toast bread in toaster. While bread is toasting, whip eggs, almond milk, vanilla, and cinnamon until consistent. Once bread is toasted, dip in egg mixture to coat and move to a pan on stove. Pour remaining mixture over pan. Flip bread after a minute and cook through as desired. Plate, top accordingly, (try berries, banana slices, grass-fed butter, pure maple syrup, coconut butter, honey, or nut butter of choice) and enjoy thoroughly!

One Healthy Breakdown: A hearty, healthy, and heavenly breakfast in minutes!

One Pan Wonder

Last night, dinner came together quickly, received a big stamp of approval, and involved an easy clean-up thanks to one pan and a few local ingredients. This one pan wonder will quickly become a staple, packed with flavor and ready to eat in a flash. I used fluke, but feel free to experiment with other fish, chicken, beef, or even tempeh. The possibilities are endless!

IMG_2492Here’s how it’s done: (serves 2)

In a large pan, sauté diced garlic (3-6 cloves) in olive oil. Add scallions (use the whole leaf, both green and white parts, discarding the very tops and bottoms) and continue to sauté for another minute before adding chopped zucchini. When garlic and scallions start to brown, add fish, another drizzle of olive oil, juice of half a lemon, salt and pepper. Once cooked thru, remove, plate, and enjoy. Note that chicken, beef, and thicker cut fish will take longer to cook, so add them to pan at the beginning instead of waiting for the garlic to brown. For a heartier meal, mix with brown rice for a stir fry or whole grain pasta. Voilà, it doesn’t get much easier (or healthier) than that!

One Healthy Breakdown: now that’s what I call fast food!

“We Go Together Like” Tempeh & Coconut Oil

photo 1(3)I love tempeh. I love the taste, unique texture, and not to mention, nutritional content. Tempeh is made from soybeans; it’s high in protein and essential phytonutrients. Like tofu, tempeh takes on the flavor of other ingredients, spices, oils, etc., so it’s very versatile.

Tempeh is good stuff, but tempeh sauteed in coconut oil is a whole other level. I make this at least once a week, if not more, and it never gets old. Best of all, this recipe couldn’t be easier…in fact, it doesn’t even need a recipe at all. You can buy tempeh at any health food store (and most grocery stores) and it’s precooked, so you’re just crisping it up for pleasure. Just put a tablespoon or so of coconut oil in pan to heat and add bite-sized pieces of tempeh and your favorite vegetables (broccoli, zucchini, eggplant, any leafy green, cabbage, mushrooms, green beans, bean sprouts, just to name a few of the endless possibilities) Once tempeh turns a golden brown, it’s crispy and delicious enough to eat. This meal takes all of about six minutes to prepare and did I mention it tastes ah-mazing?! And you can make it as simple or complicated as you want. I usually just do tempeh and broccoli, but here’s a recent stir-fry I made with tempeh, coconut oil, peppers, onions, bean sprouts, and liquid aminos (soy sauce alternative.) All gone.

photo 2(10)One Healthy Hamptons: seriously, this one’s tempeh-tastic.

Santa’s Favorite Peppermint Bark

Who can pass up that minty bark?! Peppermint bark is definitely an indulgence to be enjoyed this time of year. That combo of rich chocolate and mint is enough to spread holiday cheer in one little bite. After all, there’s no better way to eat a candy cane than with a side of chocolate!

MP900382936

Here’s a healthier upgrade for a homemade peppermint bark that’s sure to please anyone from your kitchen to the North Pole and back!

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of quality dark chocolate, chocolate chips, or carob chips
  • 1/4 cup cacoa powder or cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon almond milk or water
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 drops of pure peppermint extract
  • 4 peppermint candy canes or 20 peppermint candies – crushed into small pieces

Instructions:

Cover a cookie sheet with parchment paper. Combine all ingredients except for candy canes in a bowl. Transfer mixture to a sauce pan to melt on low heat (or in microwave.) Stir until consistent and let cool for just a few minutes before adding half of candy canes. Spread evenly on wax paper. Add remaining candy canes on top of chocolate sheet and freeze for at least two hours. Once completely solid, remove from freezer and break into pieces. Eat, gift, and smile.

Workout. Eat. Repeat.

Introducing “Workout. Eat. Repeat” with fitness and food expert, Anke Albert of Anke’s Fit Bakery. Anke is an expert in fitness and food to fuel your body. She’s going to be sharing a workout and recipe with us in this new segment, so get ready to workout, eat, and repeat!

WorkoutEatRepeatWorkout: Squats

Squat. Eat. Repeat. Squats are one of the most effective workouts for a number of reasons. Not only do squats work the largest muscle group, the glutes, the muscles that burn the most calories, they also engage the core, legs, back, and more. Squats are a basic exercise that you never grow out of, they are the fastest way to get from A to B, aka to get fast results. The more muscle you have in your legs, the more calories you burn overall. Start small with light weight or just your body weight and increase as you get stronger.

To squat properly, spread feet wider than hips with feet flat. Remember eyes up, chin up, chest out, butt out. If you can keep this position, you can squat. Inhale as you lower down and exhale to push up, squeezing your glutes and keeping your form. You should be able to do about 8-12 reps before exhausting yourself, so increase your weight accordingly. It’s best to hold the weight on your upper back, right where the tissue is thickest. That way, the weight will not make you lean forward and sacrifice form. If you’re just beginning, get the form down by holding a broomstick or very light barbell, this will force you to keep your chest and butt out.

Front squats, a bit more advanced, are done with the weight by the collarbone and heels elevated, which adds more of a challenge. Split squats (standing lunges) are another great exercise in the squat series that work numerous muscles, one leg at a time. It’s very important to ensure that your form is correct in order to gain benefits and avoid injury. If you’re not sure, ask a trainer at the gym or watch some squat videos online before you start squatting. When you do incorporate squats into your workout, you’ll feel and see the results before you know it!

In order for you to be strong and see results from your workouts, you must fuel your body properly. Here’s an easy seasonal recipe that is packed with protein, carbs, and taste!

So Fresh

“We are yoga-lovin’, health-food eating foodies with a background in high-end gourmet fare. This restaurant is what we’ve always wanted.” ~ freshhamptons.com

Need I say more? That’s pretty much One Healthy Hamptons’ heaven on earth. To tell you the truth, I was kind of embarrassed that I hadn’t yet been to Fresh. It seemed like I was the only one in town. People who know me or know of One Healthy Hamptons would immediately ask “have you been to Fresh?” Well, yes, folks, now I have officially been to Fresh! And, I will officially be going back again soon!

photo 3

The menu is extensive, to say the least. Pages and pages, which is fun to explore and not that overwhelming. You are first introduced to the full smoothie and juice bar and then walked through small plates, salads, sandwiches, and entrees. There is something, if not lots, for everyone. Fresh’s motto is that they serve every type of eater; vegan, those with food allergies, dietary restrictions, preferences, picky, and non, all-out carnivores, and everyone in between. Whether you’re in the mood for a simple cup of soup or a full four-course meal, Fresh has it.

Fresh is one restaurant a bride-to-be can frequent! I don’t know about you, but when choosing a restaurant, I look for a few key aspects. Most important is clearly the food. The food’s gotta be good, or what’s the point of leaving the house? “Good” to me is a combination of high-quality taste and satisfaction knowing you’re nourishing your body. Obviously, I like to know I’m eating somewhat healthy. I like when a meal feels light, not heavy. I like lots of greens. I like being able to attribute flavor to herbs, spices, or lemon, for example, rather than cream or butter. But, what’s the BEST? FRESH. When you can literally taste the crisp freshness in your meal, that’s the best. Knowing that the freshness is local and healthy? That’s the BEST.

photo 4The restaurant is rustic and cozy, with a low-key vibe. Since we went for lunch on a weekday, it was light out, pretty empty, and felt more casual. The space definitely shows potential for a dinner date, night out, or even bar scene. I love the option to sit at a table or bench seating, can’t go wrong. Lastly, the staff was very nice and welcoming, knowledgeable, and friendly.

One Healthy Breakdown: if you’re a One Healthy Hamptons reader, you’d be silly not to try Fresh!

Bask in Your Mask, At Home!

Love that post-facial feel? Why not save a little money and time by making your own natural face masks? This way, you can feel good about the ingredients and maybe even multitask by getting something done around the house (yes, a snooze, bath, or TV show counts as something!) while you bask in your mask! Try these masks over the next few weeks to rejuvenate skin after a long summer of sunshine!

Woman Getting Facial Treatment

Moisture Mask: Combine 1 whole avocado, 1 teaspoon olive oil, and a squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Blend or mash until smooth. Add a teaspoon of sea salt for added exfoliation (optional, best for oily skin.) Apply mask to face and let sit 15-20 minutes. Wash face with warm water and pat dry.

Pore Shrinker: Apply egg whites evenly to face (use one egg’s whites or about a tablespoon out of carton, preferably pasteurized.) Let dry on face about 10 minutes and wash with a gentle cleanser and warm water. Face will feel a bit stiff and pores will be instantly smaller. Also helps fight blemishes!

Revitalization Recipe: Combine one part fresh-squeezed orange juice, one part milk, and two parts honey. Apply evenly to face and let soak for 15 minutes. Rinse with warm water.

Love Grace Juice Cleanse – Sunlight in a Bottle

I recently tried Love Grace Foods‘ three-day juice cleanse. This was my first ever juice cleanse and guess what? I survived! …a little cleaner, greener, and lighter from all of that bottled sunlight! Love Grace shipped me (door to door service from NYC!) five full juices plus a ginger bomb for each day. Allow me to introduce you to the colorful wonders: Super Cider, Purify, Restore, Green Sunshine, and Longevity Tonic. With names like these, you know it’s made with love.

lovegraceAlthough I liked some juices more than others, I loved the variety of organic ingredients. I loved knowing that I was truly eating (well, drinking) a rainbow, with about 20-30 varieties of fresh produce daily, way more than I would ingest normally. Although the cleanse provides a calorie deficit, each and every one has nutritional value and is instantly absorbed due to the nature of Love Grace’s juicing. This isn’t a ‘get skinny fast’ cleanse, it’s SO much more. Love Grace’s ingredients don’t just flush the body out, but also replenish the good stuff we need long-term, like cancer and Alzheimer fighters.

Juicing is detoxifying, cleansing, rejuvenating, and inspiring. This cleanse was just the refreshing kick I needed. Speaking of kick, these cold-pressed, organic, raw, juices pack a powerful punch. Like that blink a few times, woah that’ll wake ya right up! Especially that ‘Ginger Bomb Elixer,’ it’s packed with anti-bacterial and antiviral ingredients to rev the metabolism and up your energy, preventing the body from slowing down due to the lack of calories. The shot is super intense, yet totally refreshing.

photo 1 My favorites included the Purify, (breakfast of super greens sweetened with coconut water) Super Cider (apple, carrot goodness) and, of course, the Chocolate Superfood Smoothie (banana, flax, cacoa, goji berries, dates, and more.) This Chocolate Smoothie literally got me through the cleanse, it made it all worth it – the chocolately light at the end of the tunnel. Luckily, Love Grace allows customers to customize their cleanse and purchase juice a la carte. Good news for me, now that I’ve tried them all out and picked my faves. Hello, chocolate for dinner everyday.

photo 3In all seriousness though, these daily protein smoothies provide the sustenance an active body needs. Made of way more than just produce, they’re thick and satisfying. The superfood smoothies and the ginger bombs are what set Love Grace apart from all of other juice cleanses on the market, and that I like.

The other huge perk of juice cleansing was the convenience factor. With a fridge stocked with juice, I didn’t have to think about grocery shopping, meal planning, or cooking. I happened to be attending an all day Re:TREAT while I was cleansing, which conveniently allowed me to focus 100% of my attention, instead of having to think about prepping and packing meals. I cleansed in every sense of the word; physically and mentally.

So, I bet you’re dying to know: was I hungry? Yes. Not even going to lie, at times I was starving, but not to the point that it effected my body other than a grumbling tummy. I didn’t get headaches or lightheaded, not even from the torture of replacing my normal morning coffee with peppermint tea. I didn’t go to bed starving and I made it through intense workouts just fine.

So, was it worth the hunger pangs, lack of snackin’, and coffee cravings? Yes. It was worth it to wake up feeling lighter, cleaner and leaner throughout the entire day, and it gave me a new appreciation for everything I put in my mouth. Plus, the results didn’t reverse themselves (even after my much-anticipated post-cleanse breakfast of *healthy* pancakes.)

One Healthy Breakdown: Yes, I’d absolutely juice with Love Grace again, but next time around, I’ll probably customize my own cleanse. If you’re looking for an easy, reliable first cleanse or even a long-term healthy upgrade, (made with love) check out Love Grace Foods.

Bliss Sleep Center: Sleep Healthier

Raise your hand if you don’t want a blissful night’s sleep. Yeah, I thought so. We know sleep is important, but we don’t really ever talk or hear about ‘healthier sleep.’ We watch what we eat and exercise, but why don’t we focus more on how we spend a THIRD of our life? Why is that? Sleep. It’s BIG and we’re going to talk about it.

Getting ample sleep has HUGE benefits, from a longer lifespan to weight-management, mood, increased energy, decreased stress, better attention span and even improved creativity! We all know we’re in a better mood and ready to tackle the day after a good night’s sleep, but sleep is a crucial factor in your everyday health.

Getting ample sleep has HUGE benefits, from a longer lifespan to better memory, weight-management, mood, energy, less stress, better attention span and even creativity! We all know we’re in a better mood and ready to tackle the day after a good night’s sleep, but sleep is a crucial factor in health longevity.

Beth over at Bliss Sleep Center invited One Healthy Hamptons for a tour of the new store and boy did we talk sleep! Here are Beth’s top tips for a fabulous night’s sleep:

  • know what you’re sleeping on/in. The chemicals in your mattress or bedding could be keeping you up or may be causing other health risks.
  • maintain a consistent sleeping schedule for bed time and wake up.
  • relax before bed to wind down physically and mentally.  This includes turning off your electronic devices.  Instead read a book before bed.
  • make comfort a priority. Everyone’s sleep needs are different so customize your sleep system for your ultimate comfort.
  • exercise regularly, it will help you sleep and vice versa.
  • eat healthy (There are certain foods that actually help you sleep better.  For example blueberries.)
  • leave time for digestion after dinner.
  • avoid caffeine, alcohol, and too much protein prior to bed, it will keep your body up.

Beth Lee Schlendorf just started Bliss Sleep Center in Water Mill to help customers much like herself to achieve healthier sleep. Rewind about a year ago, Beth found herself excited to use her brand new mattress, when she read on the label that the mattress must ‘air out’ for 48 hours before use. As Beth slowly became overwhelmed with the smell of chemicals coming from her new mattress, she began to do some research and was blown away with what she found. The ingredients used in typical bedding are poorly regulated and can cause cancer, reproductive issues, learning disabilities in kids, and who knows what else. Beth is a believer in healthy eating and daily exercise, so she started wondering about the effects of sleeping on this mattress that was oozing with chemicals…and what else around the home, specifically the bedroom, can make for healthier living. Enter, Bliss Sleep Center, a one stop shop for all your sleeping needs.

photo 1As Beth further researched, she came to the conclusion that organic bedding was the only option. Only, which bed? Where to buy? Where to try? Although she wanted healthy and natural, Beth acknowledged the most important factor in sleep: comfort. She wanted to try out the products before purchasing, but she was at a loss, hence her idea to open the store and help others learn how to improve their own sleep. Bliss Sleep Center showcases a wide variety of mattresses, pillows, sheets, children’s furniture, cribs, duvets, and more. I got the grand tour and even tested out some mattresses to give you all the fun facts!

Bliss Sleep Center is the only ‘healthy bedding’ store throughout Long Island that allows you to see, touch, and test the products firsthand. Beth offers a variety of price points, her favorite being the Royal-Pedic (which Beth refers to as the “Bentley of Mattresses,” which reclines and has a built-in massaging feature.) Everything is custom to the customer’s preference, they even have mattresses that allow to be customized differently for each side of the bed. The wool duvet covers regulate heat for all those couples who can’t agree on temperature. Beth sleeps cold and her husband sleeps hot; the wool duvet both cools and warms accordingly, both on a mattress custom for their own comfort-preferences.

Everything comes with tons of options, from comfort to colors and patterns. The kids stuff is adorable as well, there’s definitely no sacrificing of ‘cuteness’ for quality.

photo 5So, what really is the difference? This bedding is made without common industry ingredients such as PBDE’s, (Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers aka flame retardants) petroleum-based foam, GMO’s, pesticides, hermacides, etc. Scary stuff!

Some of the benefits Beth and other natural ‘sleep converters’ have experienced? More energy, healthier skin (they don’t call it beauty sleep for nothin’!) decreased feelings of stress, anxiety and depression, fewer headaches, mind clarity, consistently sleeping through the night, less back pain, milder allergy symptoms,…and, lastly, lots more reports of oversleeping. Oops! These products are also naturally dust-mite repellent, hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial, mold, and mildew resistant.

As I said to Beth, when I can afford a ‘sleeping renovation,’ I’ll be back to Bliss immediately! She understands the commitment and suggests making changes as life allows you to. When you’re ready for a change, or when it’s time to replace things at home, do your homework. Eat healthy, sleep healthy, and re-examine your home for toxicity. Aren’t we glad Beth happened to buy that new mattress, do the research for us, make this a priority for her own family and now for yours?

One Healthy Breakdown: we evaluate our food and activity, it’s time we sleep healthier too! Stop in to Bliss Sleep Center to chat sleep with Beth!
