Healthy Holidays at The Beach

Jamie Lerner is a private in-home fitness trainer and studio instructor specializing in flexibility, strength, core power, alignment, and balance as well as cardio and dance. How does Jamie stay healthy through the holiday season in the Hamptons? Here’s how:

IMG_4670Gratitude + inspiration. I’m grateful for the love and support that is all around us, it’s always available if we let it in. I’m grateful for the comforts of the privileged life we live here. I’m inspired by the millions of people on earth who devote their lives to helping others who suffer.

Healthy Thanksgiving. Whenever I’m home for Thanksgiving, I like to offer a fitness class that morning. This year is no exception. It gives us a feeling of community, an hour or so to put the preparations and fuss and visitors aside to take care of ourselves, and offers the best possible insurance that we’ll feel so much better before, during, and after the feast! And then I teach a cardio class Friday morning to help burn it all off!

Mindfulness tricks. No tricks! Plenty of treats! It helps to keep in mind that a treat means something out of the ordinary, not something you consume or experience every day. When you get an impulse or craving for something that qualifies as a treat, try filing it under “hm, sounds good! Let me hold off on that today, maybe tomorrow.” The next time that impulse arises, punt it again and continue to enjoy the anticipation. You may forget about it entirely or the special situation presents itself to treat yourself. It could be food or drink, an activity, a big purchase, or another indulgence. As for staying healthy, my fitness/dance/movement practice has gotten me through cancer, heartbreak, the blues, anxiety, and continues to sustain me as I contend with the aging process. That, and spending as much time as I can with dogs!

IMG_1691It’s also good to remember that even though it’s getting colder and we’re busy-busy-busy, the beach is always there, year round, waiting to calm us down, open us up, and reconnect us to life.

One Healthy Breakdown: What a great reminder – we sure are lucky to be surrounded by beach and beauty in the Hamptons! Happy holidays, Jamie, and thank you for sharing your insight!

*Until January, 2016, we’ll be spreading health through the holiday season here in the Hamptons! If you’d like to share your own holiday tip, trick, tradition, recipe, etc. as part of OHH’s #HealthyHolidays, email kiley@onehealthyhamptons.com.

AKT is in Motion in the Hamptons

Want to trick yourself into thinking you’re at a dance party while your heart rate maxes and your muscles work? Then get your booty to AKT and get ready to shake that…and lots more.

photo 2AKT in Motion was founded by dancer Anna Kaiser, who brought her passion for dance into a multi-disciplinary, all-in-one routine. All of AKT’s teachers are dancers with a greater appreciation for fitness and cross-training.

AKT is a high-intensity interval workout full of dance cardio combined with strength training, resistance training, flexibility, and more. Between dance intervals, we worked our core with planks, arms with weights, and glutes on the mat. Every two weeks, the class changes entirely. Just when you may have the routine down, you’re introduced to a whole new class, beginning to end, to keep us guessing. There’s nothing routine about this dance-cardio class. The dancing is a fast-moving, high-energy, fun and playful routine that feels more like a dance party than a fitness class, but don’t let that fool you into thinking you’re not going to sweat.

photo 5Oh, you’re going to sweat…even if you’re like me and can’t dance for beans. Do your best, keep moving, and have fun, even when everyone goes one way and you go the other (it happens to the best of us!) In the meantime, you’ll get a good workout and clear the mind. There’s nothing else to think about but keeping up with those moves and high-energy music.

If all AKT teachers are as positive and energetic as Emily, you’re guaranteed a good time. That smile did not leave her face the entire hour; her mood was contagious and her moves were out of this world. The energy at AKT will make you want to spend the day on the dance floor. No need for cocktails before this dance party, it’s happening. Check out AKT this summer at Hamptons Gym Corp’s Southampton and Sag Harbor locations.

Gyro what?! GYROKINESIS!

When Michelle Weber invited me to take her GYROKINESIS class, I knew I was in for something a little different. Just how different, I had no idea. I walked up to Dance Hampton (15 Lumber Lane, East Hampton) to find an adorably decorated room with a happy vibe, stools, and mats on the floor. Stools? My curiosity grew.

You may remember Michelle Weber from the post about Pre and Post-Natal Training, which does incorporate some GYROKINESIS, but this class is for anyone looking to hone in to alignment and strength from deep within the core. Michelle explains that GYROKINESIS is a core-strength movement system that incorporates the benefits of yoga, tai chi, gymnastics, and dance. The class works in rhythmic circular and spiral movements to allow the entire body to stretch and strengthen through spinal movement, increasing flexibility, extension, coordination, stamina, and relaxation. At times, I felt it all.

As a pretty frequent exerciser, I learned a TON in this one hour. GYROKINESIS is like nothing I’ve ever tried (and I’ve tried a lot, as you know.) I had no idea that the body could move in such a way, that I could literally pinpoint certain areas and work them with such precision. It felt like I was honing into single muscle fibers, one at a time. How? You’ve got to experience it to believe it. Believe me.

GYROKINESIS is about intention; targeting specific muscles and muscle groups with exact movements, structure, rhythm, and focus, all while inhaling and exhaling purposefully. In the midst of each move, I felt as though I was tightening, lengthening, opening, and strengthening, all at the same time. It was quite a phenomenon, this feeling of muscles tensing together at the same time you’re working to pull them apart. The result? Muscles wrapping tightly around the bone to promote length.

In addition to physical precision, GYROKINESIS produced an immediate enhancement in mind-body awareness. My brain was hyper-focused, every direction from Michelle was crucial for proper form. The signals sent from brain to muscle, and vice versa, create intense connection. This is not really a workout you can zone out to, at least at the beginning, it takes constant concentration. This class produced a heightened awareness, one I can definitely see huge potential benefits in all areas of life.
