Hope in the Hamptons

Come out and celebrate the life-saving mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital® at the Inaugural St. Jude Hope in the Hamptons on July 11th! Hosted by FOX News National Security Expert, Columnist, and Commentator, KT McFarland, this chic red carpet event will feature gourmet, farm-fresh fare, cocktails, an exclusive auction, and a performance by Billy Joel’s Broadway tribute band, The Movin’ Out Band. It’s an event not to be missed with an unprecedented cause.

St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is leading the way the world understands, treats, and defeats childhood cancer and other deadly diseases. Everything they do is centered around finding cures and saving children. The most amazing part about St. Jude is that families never receive a bill. They pay for treatment, travel, housing, and food – because St. Jude understands that the only thing that these families should worry about is helping their children live. Now that’s something to celebrate.

Hamptons ImageSt. Jude has the world’s best survival rates for the most aggressive childhood cancers. Treatments invented at St. Jude have helped push the childhood cancer survival rate from 20 percent to 80 percent and working to drive this number to 90 percent in the next decade. Meanwhile, St. Jude freely shares the breakthroughs it makes, and every child saved at St. Jude means doctors and scientists worldwide can use that knowledge to save thousands more children.

In addition to celebrating this great cause and this amazing community, we’ll honor local Hamptons family of little Drew, currently receiving treatment at St. Jude for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia. Let’s rally for Drew, support St. Jude, and celebrate summer in the Hamptons! Click here or call (212) 239-3239 to purchase tickets for Hope in the Hamptons. One Healthy Hamptons is honored to support this cause and we’re looking forward to seeing you Saturday, July 11, 2015, 6-10:30pm at 1143 Deerfield Road, Water Mill.

Wine & Wellness

“Wine is constant proof that God loves us and wants to see us happy.” ~ Benjamin Franklin

red wine, sunny afternoonLet’s talk WINE. Some of the oldest documents, dating back to 2200 BC, mention wine as a man-made medicine. Wine has been promoted, since Hippocrates’ days, as a part of a healthy diet (yay!) Some of the benefits of moderate wine drinking (everything in moderation!) include:

  • Reducing the risk of depression
  • Anti-aging
  • Preventing certain cancers, like breast, prostate, lung, and colon cancer
  • Raising levels of omega-3 fatty acids
  • Preventing dementia
  • Reducing the risk of Type 2 Diabetes
  • Lowering risk of heart disease
  • Promoting strong bone density/lessening Osteoporosis
  • Lowering risk of stroke
  • Boosting good cholesterol and lowering bad cholesterol
  • Cutting the risk of cataracts
  • Increasing lifespan
  • Boosting mental health

Think PINK This October

Happy October! One Healthy Hamptons is going PINK for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Did you know that 1 in 8 women are diagnosed with breast cancer? Sadly, we all know someone, at least one person, who has suffered with breast cancer. So, what can WE do?? Until there is a cure, we can spread awareness and take preventative measures against known causes. Make it your October goal to make some healthy changes to decrease your odds while increasing your health. These breast cancer prevention tips promote health in general, they’re changes everyone should follow, whether you think you’re at risk or not. Are you with us?? BC

The obvious? DON’T SMOKE! I don’t know why anyone in this day and age would pay $$ to get cancer and stink. Please just don’t do it.

Exercise! Get moving! Whatever workout you like, do it! Getting your heart pumping increases good estrogen while decreasing the bad. It also strengthens our immune system and aids in maintaining a healthy weight, which is a huge factor in cancer cell growth.

Decompress. Today. Right now. Make YOU a priority and do something to destress everyday. Even if it’s just deep breathing for five minutes or a 15 minute nap. Stress inhibits the immune system, so decompress and rest up! Doctors orders!

Do a little yoga. Make it a priority to get to a class or practice at home. Yoga not only reduces stress, it also balances hormones, which play a huge role in cancer development.

Above all else is FOOD! Nutrition is a SUPER important factor when fighting cancer of any kind and it’s even more important for prevention. According to breastcancer.org, diet is partly responsible for between 30-40% of all cancers. Eat a healthy diet. Get your antioxidants, and limit sugar (cancer’s best friend.) That means more vegetables, fruits, and healthy fats in their purest form. Less processed crap. Nutrient-dense foods, especially plant-based, increase our alkalinity, which makes it a whole lot less pleasant for cancer cells to grow inside of us.

Are you sensing a pattern here? These are all no brainers, all things I preach weekly. Daily. Hourly. Yes, balance is important and we’re not all perfect. We’re not going to eat healthy, work out, meditate, avoid sugar, do yoga, and get fresh air every single day. But, do your best. It’s a new month and a new chance to make small changes towards a healthier you.

If you like the sound of that but aren’t sure where to start, email kiley@onehealthyhamptons.com today. Our fall cleanse includes step-by-step tactics, recipes, and tips to conquer each and every one of these cancer-busting strategies. Until then, think pink and H A P P Y  O C T O B E R !

WHOLE and More!

I recently attended a lecture by Dr. Cambell (author of The China Study and Whole.) Here’s what I learned:

Arranged Vegetables Creating a FaceOur bodies are machines constantly working towards HEALTH. It is how we feed our bodies that determines how easy or difficult it is for the body to get to what we’re working towards. When we feed the body the best fuel, (whole foods) we thrive from the nutrients, making it much easier to maintain a healthy body. When we don’t eat healthy, our body has to work much harder to break down the food, remove the nutrients, and fuel itself to continue to work towards health. If we fuel our machines (bodies) right, they will ‘run’ better and be healthier all around. Whole foods are easily digested, so the majority of the nutrients are absorbed into the body. Since food fuels the body’s processes, the easier the food is to digest, the more we benefit from it.

Nutrition may actually outweigh genetics. We are all pre-disposed to disease through genetics, some more than others, as DNA varies person to person. Nutrition, however, determines which of these genes are turned on. For example, we know that cancer cells thrive in an acidic environment. Eating a diet full of whole foods and plants increases alkalinity, while too much meat and processed foods tend to increase acidity.

MP900387908The good news is that we can actually reverse disease and shut these cells off, just like we can turn them on. Diet can change the body on a cellular level. For example, studies show that people with heart disease can be “cured” through nutrition. Although the genes still exist, they are dormant as a result of dietary changes. How cool is that?! And why don’t most people know that?!!!

Modern medicine is not based on holistic health and nutrition. The food and drug industries seem to be competing instead of aligning in the name of health. Most doctors do not preach a whole food diet because nutrition is the one thing that is not taught in medical school that is actually the leading factor for change.

Lastly, and my very favorite point is a direct Dr. Cambell quote: “when you eat healthy, your taste buds begin to change overtime. You begin to crave a salad. If you don’t have a salad, you want one.” I can’t reiterate how true this is. Overtime, as I’ve become more knowledgeable about nutrition, my body has naturally learned to crave healthy foods. If I go a day without fresh vegetables or fruit, my body wants nothing more than wholesome nourishment. The same goes for poor diet, so why not train yourself wisely?

One Healthy Breakdown: educate yourself. Nourish yourself. You deserve the best.

Apple Cider Vinegar is a MUST

Apple cider vinegar has super powers. Seriously, this stuff works wonders promoting bone health, clearer skin, stronger hair, better digestion, more energy, balanced pH levels, sinus health, weight management, whiter teeth, heartburn, and finally, catching flies! Yup, you read right. Apple cider vinegar is a MUST have!

applecidvin

All of these amazing health benefits can be attained by simply drinking this stuff! Not a lot, just a little goes a long way. Go with raw and organic for maximum results. While some take a tablespoon or a shot of apple cider vin daily or twice daily, I prefer to add a bit to water with lemon juice for a morning and nightly cleanser (warm water even doubles for a bedtime “tea.”) At first taste, you may not be hooked, but the benefits are countless and that sour taste will grow on ya. Feel free to add a drop of honey or stevia if need be to get it down, but eventually, you won’t mind the taste (trust me!)

Apple cider vin does wonders for the whole body. You’ll wake up feeling fresher because this stuff aids the body in its natural processes: from digestion to germ-fighting. Whether you have a sensitive stomach or not, apple cider vin will work magic, from lowering glucose levels (super powerful for diabetics) to preventing heartburn. Use apple cider vin in salad dressing or other recipes calling for vinegar. Not only will you notice physical effects, apple cider vin promotes alkalinity over time, which prevents cancer from forming. Yay for alkalinity!

You can also use apple cider vinegar as shampoo, facial cleanser, household cleaner, sunburn relief, teeth whitener, deodorant, and the anti-fruit fly savior! Just use as is on hair and skin. You can even add a little to your bath or dip your feet in to detox the skin for an at-home pedicure. Use an old spray bottle for a natural household cleaner. Finally, apple cider vin saved my kitchen from a recent fruit fly attack, long after the fruit was gone. To catch those little buggers, add a little bit of dish soap to a shallow bowl or plate of apple cider vin and add water so the mixture bubbles. Cover with saran wrap and poke holes with a fork. Hours later, you’ll have floating fruit flies and less flying around your kitchen! (A huge thank you to those who suggested this solution during my recent fruit fly freakout!)

One Healthy Breakdown: Bet you’re heading to the grocery store if you don’t already have this stuff around, apple cider vin is a MUST.

One Super Saturday

Super Saturday is always a day to remember in the Hamptons. Hosted by Donna Karen and Kelly Ripa, this past Saturday was the annual designer garage sale at Nova’s Ark in Water Mill to benefit Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Super Saturday is nothing short of spectacular.

I started going to Super Saturday a few years ago with my boyfriend’s family. Once I was first roped in, I’ve never looked back and now it’s a summer highlight, virtually ‘Christmas in July.’ My boyfriend’s mom (Gail, below center) beat stage 3 ovarian cancer, as did my maternal grandmother. For us, this is way more than just a shopping outing, Hamptons go-to, and a car full of shopping bags. It’s a special celebration, to honor those personally affected by this awful disease, especially Gail who is the ultimate survivor. She kicked cancer’s ass in 2008.

photo 1Over 22,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer annually and less than 50% of those survive five years post-diagnosis. If the disease is detected early, it is most likely treatable, so be sure not to miss a doctor’s appointment and question abnormalities!

OCRF is the largest charity world-wide funding ovarian cancer research. So, what’s Super Saturday all about? Essentially, shopping discount designer merchandise; hundreds of venders donate 100% of their Super Saturday proceeds to OCRF. There’s a ton more going on around the sale tent, from a kids carnival, games, manicures, psychic readings, demos, sweets and treats, celebrity sightings, face painting, raffle, and, an open bar. Sant Ambroeus provides an amazing catered lunch and there’s always lots of other treats; Hampton Coffee, ZICO, Pirate’s Booty, Blue Print juice, Carvel ice cream, and more.

Prices lower as the day goes on, so by the end of the day, once you’ve shopped and are about to drop, remaining expensive designer merchandise can cost just a few bucks. You bet your bottom dollar I got a pair of those jeans.
