Homemade Larabars

I’m always on the hunt for on-the-go bars. Not only should they taste delicious, but the perfect bar must be made of real, whole foods. Larabar gets an A in my book because of their minimal ingredients – real, whole food that we’re all familiar with…which also means that they’re pretty easy to recreate, customize, and they involve no baking whatsoever. Shall we?

Homemade Larabars: (makes 10 bars)

Ingredients:

  • 10 dates
  • 2 generous tablespoons nut butter (peanut, almond, or cashew butter are all great)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • dash of sea salt
  • water as needed
  • totally optional modifications:
    • 1/3 cup oats (for a serving of healthy carbs)
    • 2 tablespoons cacao nibs or dark chocolate chips
    • 2 tablespoons coconut butter or shredded coconut
    • 2 tablespoons hemp seeds (for added protein)
    • 2 tablespoons high quality protein powder (for added protein)
    • 1 teaspoon honey or maple syrup (for picky kids with a serious sweet tooth)
    • replace 1/2 of dates with other dried fruit of choice, like apricots or goji berries
    • 1/4 cup blueberries for blueberry flavor

Add all ingredients (except water) to food processor and mix. If mixture is too dry to stick together, add a teaspoon of water and continue to blend. Once mixture is consistent, transfer to a square pan or glass container and smoothly spread it as evenly as possible. Refrigerate for at least two hours. Remove and cut into square or rectangular bars and remove bars as you wish (ideally with a flat metal spatula.) You can either keep in same container or individually wrap bars for travel. Enjoy a bar as a snack, pre-workout energy boost, or a sweet treat!

Paleo Strawberry Beet Bars

What looks like a brownie but has zero grains, dairy, chocolate, or added sugar? Another experiment gone right in the OHH kitchen, Paleo Strawberry Beet Bars, of course! These babies are chock-full of superfoods and taste, so much so that even the littlest critics will enjoy.

Ingredients:

  • 1.5 cups fresh or frozen strawberries
  • 1-2 cooked beets (I used 2 precooked Love Beets)
  • 2 tablespoons goji beries
  • 1/4 cup almond flour
  • 1 heaping tablespoon hemp seeds
  • 2 tablespoons ground flaxseed
  • 1/4 cup almond or peanut butter
  • 5 whole figs or dates
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1 heaping tablespoon coconut oil
  • splash of almond milk (if necessary)

Instructions:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees and grease a brownie pan with coconut oil. Combine all ingredients in Vitamix or high-powered blender/food processor. Once mixture is blended, pour into pan and bake for 40-45 minutes. Test with a fork or knife to make sure bars are solid, they may need a little bit more time depending on your pan size. Let cool, cut into bars, and enjoy for breakfast, snack, post-workout fuel, or a healthy dessert all week long!

Berry Good Oat Bars

Introducing the berry good oat bar, star of the snack scene and best blueberry- loaded breakfast in town! Loaded with nutrients, these babies are chewy like a brownie, but much healthier, with the perfect combination of carbs, protein, and fat. Now, that’s berry, berry good!

IMG_1975In a mixer/blender, combine all of the following ingredients:

2 cups berries (blueberries or a variety of berries, fresh or thawed frozen)
1 cup plain oats
1/3 cup unsweetened applesauce
1/4 cup unsweetened almond milk
1/2 cup nuts OR nut butter of choice
1 tablespoon flax
1 teaspoon honey

optional additions:
1 scoop high-quality protein powder for extra protein
1/4 cup goji berries
1 tablespoon hemp or chia seeds

Spray a large brownie pan and pour batter evenly into pan. Bake at 325-350 for about 15-20 minutes. Check with a fork, they’ll be soft, but won’t stick to fork. Let cool for at least 30 minutes and cut into individual bars. Serve cool or heated and enjoy any time of day.

Better Boozin’

MC900449032In honor of all things worth celebrating, I give you top tips for better boozin’:

  • Go with wine, wine spritzers, light beer, or simple cocktails to avoid drinking your calories (usually, the lighter the color, the lighter the drink)
  • Always drink water while ya booze
  • Use zero-cal club soda, seltzer, or sparkling water instead of tonic
  • Use REAL juice – like fresh-squeezed or 100% juice if store-bought
  • Use REAL fruit – mix/garnish with lemon, grapefruit, berries, and other fruits for natural fruitiness, especially fun to get creative with fruit during summer months!
  • Sweeten with stevia, honey, or real maple syrup for natural sweetness
  • Don’t be afraid to get creative with your mixers…hello, kombucha!
  • Watch those portions and keep track of how many you’ve had
  • Use fun glasses. Even a boring drink or a mocktail in a fun glass tastes better
  • Lasty, and possibly most important: keep full water bottles beside your bed and make sure to drink at least one before hitting the hay – you’ll cut your hangover and headache in half instantly because you won’t be as dehydrated!

BODYPUMP: The Best Time You Can Have With a Barbell

Are you trying to get stronger? Discover interesting and effective new workouts? Want to change your body? Then it is time to PUMP! BODYPUMP is the LES MILLS barbell workout. A unique program that strengthens the entire body, there is nothing like it!

photo(106)I have to admit, before I tried BODYPUMP I was terrified of it. I would see glimpses of class through the windows at the gym and would tell my mom “that’s the hard class, we don’t want to try that.” Finally, in late January, she convinced me to do it and I became instantly hooked. Now I attend BODYPUMP three times a week and couldn’t be happier with my results.

When taking a BODYPUMP class, it is best to come early to set up your equipment. You need a bench with 2-3 risers on each side, a bar, and an assortment of weights. It is also advised to have water and a towel nearby – you will work up a sweat! The barbell used in BODYPUMP is adjustable, that way you can use the weight you are comfortable with. Once your setup is complete, you are ready to PUMP!

The class starts with a light bar as you are led through a warm-up that gives a preview of some of the moves you will see later in the class. After that, you spend the next 55 minutes working your large muscle groups to some awesome music with 70-100 reps per track. The instructor guides you through your weight selection for each body part and will give you time in between tracks to adjust your bar. Here is a breakdown of a typical BODYPUMP class:

Track 1: Warm-Up

Track 2: Squats – The heaviest weight of the class, works your legs and glutes with 70-100 squats using different tempos and stances.

Track 3: Chest – Laying down on the bench working the chest with moves like chest presses and flys.

Track 4: Back – A series of moves that includes deadlifts, rows, clean and presses, power presses, and wide rows.

Track 5: Triceps – Shift to smaller muscle groups to work the back of the arms with a variety of exercises to target this muscle group, including tricep kickbacks, dips, extensions, and presses.

Track 6: Biceps – Work your biceps with curls, bottom halfs, and even rows. (For me, this is always the toughest track!)

Track 7: Lunges – Hitting the legs again! Besides lunges, this track can also include more squats and my favorite: plyometric jumps.

Track 8: Shoulders – Target the shoulders with push-ups, upright rows, side raises, mac raises, and overhead presses.

Track 9: Core – Use a series of moves to work the core. From planks to bridges, sit-ups, you name it!

Track 10: Cool Down.

As you’ve probably grasped, BODYPUMP works the entire body! LES MILLS keeps it interesting by releasing new music and moves every couple of months. The exercises do vary, but the format of each class is kept the same. You get used to the structure, but instructors mix it up. If you stick with BODYPUMP, you will see some amazing progress. For me personally, the squat weight I used for my first few classes is now my warm-up weight, for example. Like any LES MILLS class, the tracks are choreographed and easy to follow. The focus is on proper form over anything else, and that is what makes the program both safe and effective.

Besides all of the strength training benefits you get from BODYPUMP, another reason to do it is that it is fun! For me, strength training on my own is booooring, but with BODYPUMP, the hour flies by and I get an amazing workout. This class welcomes anyone; the moves are easily modifiable and you choose your own weights for the bar. There are a variety of ages and fitness levels in every class. If you are looking to challenge and change yourself, BODYPUMP is the program for you. Classes are offered at both the Sag Harbor Gym and Southampton Gym. Check the schedule for more details!

So Fresh

“We are yoga-lovin’, health-food eating foodies with a background in high-end gourmet fare. This restaurant is what we’ve always wanted.” ~ freshhamptons.com

Need I say more? That’s pretty much One Healthy Hamptons’ heaven on earth. To tell you the truth, I was kind of embarrassed that I hadn’t yet been to Fresh. It seemed like I was the only one in town. People who know me or know of One Healthy Hamptons would immediately ask “have you been to Fresh?” Well, yes, folks, now I have officially been to Fresh! And, I will officially be going back again soon!

photo 3

The menu is extensive, to say the least. Pages and pages, which is fun to explore and not that overwhelming. You are first introduced to the full smoothie and juice bar and then walked through small plates, salads, sandwiches, and entrees. There is something, if not lots, for everyone. Fresh’s motto is that they serve every type of eater; vegan, those with food allergies, dietary restrictions, preferences, picky, and non, all-out carnivores, and everyone in between. Whether you’re in the mood for a simple cup of soup or a full four-course meal, Fresh has it.

Fresh is one restaurant a bride-to-be can frequent! I don’t know about you, but when choosing a restaurant, I look for a few key aspects. Most important is clearly the food. The food’s gotta be good, or what’s the point of leaving the house? “Good” to me is a combination of high-quality taste and satisfaction knowing you’re nourishing your body. Obviously, I like to know I’m eating somewhat healthy. I like when a meal feels light, not heavy. I like lots of greens. I like being able to attribute flavor to herbs, spices, or lemon, for example, rather than cream or butter. But, what’s the BEST? FRESH. When you can literally taste the crisp freshness in your meal, that’s the best. Knowing that the freshness is local and healthy? That’s the BEST.

photo 4The restaurant is rustic and cozy, with a low-key vibe. Since we went for lunch on a weekday, it was light out, pretty empty, and felt more casual. The space definitely shows potential for a dinner date, night out, or even bar scene. I love the option to sit at a table or bench seating, can’t go wrong. Lastly, the staff was very nice and welcoming, knowledgeable, and friendly.

One Healthy Breakdown: if you’re a One Healthy Hamptons reader, you’d be silly not to try Fresh!
